New Newsbeat imaging

I recently left the BBC and I can tell you that each presenter plays the "Newsbeat Ramp In" at XX:XX:51, fade up the newsbeat studio on their desk, and then on the minute, the show presenter fades out the ramp in and leave the newsbeat studio faded up, until they finish

I've also noticed that the new R1 variant of the newsbeat intro sounds like a rework of R1 Weekend Breakfast opener ?

Just heard the new news beds - am liking the refresh after nearly 5 years of the old beds (the longest of any package recently I think!); one thing that stands out from me is the tailored ramp ups for each station

...but one thing that bugs me is the lack of an out stab - it'll take some getting used to but it puts it on a level with commercial radio offerings

So the new Newsbeat beds. Personally I like the beds themselves, including the unique openers for each station. But, having listened to all 3 station outputs, the lack of an out stab is really apparent, and sounds bad. There's certainly something missing!

But I'm also not keen on them starting the beds again after ever story, it sounds a little rough sometimes. The last package (5 years) was great, but it was time for something new.

so how does the presenter keep to time for that? for instance systems like Myriad and PO1 at stations I work at have a time marker so you can see how much under or over you are - also how does it work when they change shows - so Greg to RMC for example

It’s going to expose newer presenters or people who mess it up. As the clean “Newsbeat” stab into the bed after the headline kind of forgave any mess

they have always varied the ramp in between networks, so there's no change from that perspective. I was curious about the ramp in top, but its 9 seconds like the old one so the presenters dont have any change to worry about

pres is trained to know that they must hit play on the news ramp in at 51 secs because news reader will begin regardless. They use the clock in the studio to know the time and all the songs will be scheduled to account for this - if they are a minute or two ahead of sched they'll fill.

as for show handover, lets say Greg is on Air in 82A and RMC are going to go from 82B - 82A has control of the network, shortly before RMC are due on air, they'll output a test tone. 82A will assign the output of 82B to a fader that they will then listen to, checking for the test tone.

If all is okay, 82B will stop the tone and 82A will fade them down. 82B will have the output of 82A on a fader of theirs so they can hear the studio and their cue to start about a minute before their on air time, 82A will fade 82B back up, and the first part of the show from 82B will go to air via 82A.

When everything is okay, 82B will request control of the network on the TX system, which 82A must approve as the currently on air studio 82A would the release their control, handing it over to 82B who is now the on air studio.

The "robot clara" effect you sometimes get occurs when a loop happens. If 82A is in control of the network, theyll have 82B faded up, but if 82B has 82A output faded up to their output, it loops back so you get this loops of audio that results in the robotic sounding audio.

Sounds to me like there is a subtle change in the timings, they seem to be hitting the ramp in at xx:xx:50 today on the new beds, though the 'vocal' is slightly longer so they still have the same 8 seconds to speak. Funny how Arielle crashed it slightly on the first ever outing for the new stuff!

Ah yes you’re right!

Very informartive - and as per earlier whay about anthems and party anthems - they are done in blocks? how does that work

yeah anthems are premixed and played out as a block. They load them in as a single file - and then have silent takes along side that act simply as the song metadata so that the currently playing (and PRS reporting) still happens

Thanks for this, some great insight ?

    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend.  Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5).  I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon.  It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
    • Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay tomorrow (Monday 29th April).
    • When Scott and Chris announced their departure from R1, I remember there was lots of speculation about who would take over the 1pm slot. Matt and Mollie were talked about a lot on here, and at the time I really didn't rate them as a replacement. A few years on, I see that I was totally wrong. They are such a good pairing, and it's the same kind of duo as Scott and Chris, in that they are real life friends, who spend time together in their real lives, which really does come across on air. True friends having a laugh together, and everyone is invited is how it feels to me now. I never thought about it before, but I agree with @coffeeandgin that Mollie is the Scott of the duo - pop obsessed and maybe a litte ditsy, but so funny, and in need of someone to anchor to or bounce off.  It seems that Matt is the kind of Chris of the duo then in that comparison, the one with the ideas, but also needs another person to make the magic happen. I know I'm outside of the R1 demographic, and maybe Dean and Vicky were meant to be younger and fresher, but I'm sure in my younger years I would have preferred to listen to two people who had a genuine connection and could really make each other laugh, as well as have the listeners laugh along. That was the Scott and Chris factor for me, and I think the only pair that come close to that now are Matt and Mollie.
