Whilst I understand it may be ‘cheaper’ or offers more ‘entertainment value’, I still think it’s OTT. Alright, have one or two but EVERY day time show with the exception of Breakfast is a duo. Come on?! Whilst Capital is commercial, it does say something that none of their daytime shows are duos except for Breakfast. I don’t think a duo makes it less likely to switch to Spotify. Radio is a personal medium. It’s about a one-on-one relationship with the presenter and listener. That’s what makes radio so special. That’s what drove Greg James love of radio I imagine. Also, Matt and Mollie & Sam and Dannii work because they’re ‘real’ friends. There is established chemistry. Whilst than can grow of course separately Radio 1 likes to pair presenters up who just don’t gel together. One catastrophic example of that was Dean and Vicky. And, poor Vicky. Just let her present a show individually! Aled has made a number of changes, too many to be quite honest and I don’t like the direction he has taken Radio 1. I shall be NOT be listening to a social media influencer with limited experience and who cannot be even trusted to be let loose on live radio ruin my Thursday afternoons. Another absolutely bonkers decision. Aled, you’ve driven me to the unthinkable! I shall be switching to Spotify on Thursday afternoons!

In terms of time and effort I’d say it is as especially these days producers seem to work on more than 1 show. i do agree I think Vicky and Charley sadly won’t be a success and be Vicky’s final radio 1 gig. 

Sending a member of the show team to record stuff in the street and then edit it is extremely low cost. The issue with the multiple presenters is that some of the pairings don't work that well and unless the presenters are really special (such as Sam & Danni or Matt & Mollie or Vick/Katie & Jordan/Emil) they just sound like two people talking to each other and not the listeners. Not convinced that Charlie & Jerry will work that well (as much as they both have separate appeal) or Vicky & Charley.

I think the duos is actually cheaper in terms of features for the shows A v B winner plays their song is an easy enough feature. Cheaper to produce than Scott’s stupid street for example and also you don’t get nearly as many guests on now either.    I also think our daytime presenter spend combined now even with RMC is cheaper than Moyles, Fearne, Greg and Scott.  It’s produces different output to heart and capital which is just speed links outside breakfast. Also I suspect some weeekend presenters were on retainers to provide cover which isn’t needed as much now (apart from Going home XD)

I am more sympathetic towards why Radio 1 have decided to use duo and trios on most daytime shows... it is clearly about increasing the entertainment value. In a world where music radio can be less relevant because everyone can start listening to their own Spotify playlist, it make sense to me that music isn't the sole focus. As said above, I think this article is trying to cause some issues for the BBC. There was a similar one about Radio 2 a few weeks back around the mood post-Scott. By and large the 'right thing' happens eventually (see Matt & Mollie and Katie decisions) - but it would be good to have a bit more confidence in all of the announcements.

I would agree with that.  I liked Arielle on Early Breakfast too during that period so my only weak spot was Dean. On another note - and I'm trying my best not to be unkind here - I have never seen why Vicky Hawksworth was (a) given her original slot with Dean and (b) has been given 2 shots at weekend mid-mornings which is the best weekend slot.  I just don't think there is anything that special about her. Controversial opinion, I think Radio 1 needs to go back to mostly single presenter shows.  it feels a little bit like the intimacy with the audience has been broken.  Aside from being fantastic generally, there is a reason why people feel so close to Greg - he is following the old rule of radio of talking to one person (The listener).  Even part of the reason that Scott's show worked was that he was always the presenter, it was always his name on the door (though I think it was officially Scott and Chris on 5 Live?).
