Danny Beard's Radio 1 show

Isn't exactly the best look too when rather than using one of 'Christmas/New Year' intake or one of the better Friday Early Breakfast DJs as an interim that Aled's first thought is to throw in a celeb. I

Does seem to be the way though with the BBC though at the moment to bring in celebs as cover - it's been that way on Radio 2 for a while and now Radio 1 seems to be following a similar path so I wonder if it's driven too by those above Aled.

The longer the weekend afternoon slot remains unannounced the more you wonder if once again James Cusack will be overlooked for a permanent role when really he is the obvious choice.

Can't say I've listened too much to Danny so far so can't speak for how good or otherwise they are.

This might sound small, but hear me out. I think its fair to say regular radio 1 listeners know the whatsapp no matter if they use it or not. To hear danny say "03, 700, 100" and miss off third of the number and it happens constantly and after however many weeks now sounds stupid.

While we can get barked at for not listening to the in-house hospital radio service at least they know the number. When you put that with saying big weekend is in London, the ref of "cozie livs" like its nothing which was in such poor taste, the whole show is a major turn off and not a vibe. Even the brilliant playlist couldn't save it on Friday and we had to switch.

My prediction on this is a nice idea but one that hasn't worked and it won't reappear in the same way. Someone said there's an abba pod on sounds? That's probably the best place because their live shows are really bad.

Jamie Laing had the exact same issue even towards the end of his period being Mollie's maternity cover and he then walked straight into a drivetime role.

I'd hope for their sakes that both Danny and Jamie are trying to do similar to what Mollie did when she was first on Radio 1 and shadowing other shows on the network to give themselves the best chance of being the best they can be as DJs on Radio 1.

Danny has been speaking to the Mirror about his critics.

Undoutedly the show annoys the bigots who don't like them for what they are.

However, I simply don't like the show as it feels poor quality and out of sync with the sound of the station.

I think had Danny been booked as a one off or co-host for only a weekends worth of shows it would’ve been fine. I can see how Aled would want to book them to show commitment to supporting queer and non-binary talent from the queer community and culture scene. But over the years of take-overs there are many good talented LGBTQ+ in the radio industry.

Just want to politely remind that their pronouns are they/them.

Completely agree, so many good LGBTQ+ options that would be better. As another poster said, it's horrible people are hating on Danny for bigoted reasons, the simple fact is they aren't very good on the radio!

I really like Danny! Find him funny and good taste in music ❤️

Fair enough if you find Danny funny, but the music on the show isn't at all chosen by the presenter and would be the same whomever covered the slot.

I just wonder if they need a bit more of a mentor and someone to really sit down and critique the programme with them. I'd assume they'd be receptive to the feedback. Surely someone does that?

This. The show is poor quality and isn't getting any better. Danny feels very out of sync with anything at radio 1, including its own whatsapp number. That could maybe be forgiven if the show itself was good, but it's not. Dannys stories are cringe, the talking points are cringe and the refs to real world things are cringe. To think this used be katie's show, the quality level is through the floor.

It's nothing to do with what they stand for like was said in this article and its really wrong if people say things like that. BUT... yes danny might get a text from a SCOUSE builder who likes them, but hello danny is... scouse ffs. I don't buy into the fact most listeners are buying into this show like danny leans towards in the article, it's mission 'i need to save this'

They said I've been in the entertainment industry for 10 years and on gaydio (never heard them and I do dip in there) and I've a great cv. Well that's very nice, but what comes out of the speakers isn't entertaining, has been very out of touch, sometimes quite offensive and they're a poor quality presenter.

I'm one person and to be asked to turn it off by various people all target audience but 2 of them, across different weeks who aren't usually offended by us having the radio on speaks volumes.

Sorry but danny is definitely the novice they claim not to be and has lowered the quality

The show also feels like it doesn’t have many, if any, regular features. The previous occupants of that slot (Katie, Dean, Jordan) all had regular weekly features, whereas Danny just seems to be reading shoutouts and messages all show.

I think they will annoce this week who is doing afternoons on radio 1 breakfast  to up the interest as Jordan starts on capital next week

I wouldn't see the two as linked.

I ended up listening to quite a bit of Danny's show this morning on a long drive. I am trying to think of a positive but I can't... Seemed quite obvious to me that the show is being tech op'ed by a producer, not least the way the news jingle started playing and Danny seemed surprised, and in a way the fact that all Danny needs to do is speak at the right time makes it even less forgivable. Some quite basic errors at various points throughout which would be understandable from a novice on their first show, but really was poor (including messing up the WhatsApp number again).

I have no idea what Aled was thinking, it could be a bit more understandable if there were a couple of great features, but it's the most basic 'text in with comments on xyz' show. Can't quite decide whether Danny surpasses Maya as 'worst daytime DJ in R1 history'. Not sure I will listen any more though to help me decide.

Is Dannys idea to just slowly alienate groups of the audience until there's no one left? Out of date references, terrible talking points that are frankly dull and unentertaining, no clue about what happens on the rest of the station, getting band names wrong then managing to turn it into offence by saying "it was nothing but thieves, should know that being scouse" wtf?

I can't see any part of the audience that warms to Danny. With Jordan starting at capital and this show being on a Friday is this really what radio 1 need right now? I think you might be right above @Bluestraw , long surpassed Maya imo.

Some others have said it but James should have 100% gone into that show, I can only think they're putting him on weekend afternoons instead

The James Cusack situation is weird; came through at the same time as Dean McCullough, was arguably stronger than him, yet one is two years into a daytime stint and one is still getting a small amount of cover shifts. It’s a wonder Global haven’t swooped in here.

In all honesty didn’t mind her as much on the radio. I find she was more preferable on radio than television. I find she doesn’t quite fit the TV world and find most often when she is on television most viewers objectify her and is based on her looks rather than her as a presenter found she wasn’t too over bearing or in your face. I didn’t mind listening to her while completing my A-Level art work.

I do think some of Maya’s TV work is due to her looks which is back to the 70s mentality.

Yes, I do think on socia;l media theres that mentality still there. I do think on social media theres a bit of an on-line wolf whistle from when I see people talking about Maya. I think that there still is a thing in the TV where people who are seen as good looking are more likely to get jobs.

I personally do not mind him that much.  Wouldn't say I was a fan or anything but personally would rather listen to him than Dean and Vicky most days.  I was just shocked when I looked up his age as the way he talks and some of his references thought he would be a lot older than 31.

On the off chance I might have been too harsh and they've improved or been trained, I had a listen to the first 40 minutes of Dannys show today. I wasn't harsh enough.

I think there are people in the background laughing in sympathy because Danny said absolutely nothing funny, incorrect whatsapp number AGAIN, has no clue about the r1 music, completely off target topics literally waffling on about motivational speaking and talking all over jingles. Wtf is going on?

    • Matt sits in for Greg on Monday 22nd April.
    • Lovely to see Adele hyping up Sam and Danni in Cardiff today on Instagram.
    • Arielle is in Dubai and Ibiza - I think she has pre-recorded her new show this week (at least that’s what it looked like from her Insta stories on Thursday) I think if Katie is off it will mostly likely be Matt - he’s the only other one who has presented with Jamie before
    • I feel like it'd be more likely to be an early breakfast presenter than someone like james if they went down this route. Perhaps it might complicate matters (but I do completely agree with everyone saying it'd be better) and they're just waiting for July to come round and for it to be over. I believe you said it on digital spy @coffeeandgin that James is long overdue and deserves a slot on the station and I still think he was kept back from a temp show because of the weekend announcement yet to come and his global contract is a hold up. Of all the decisions recently, I think that'd be a decision that would be universally welcomed.
    • Yes they normally do this on Breakfast - sometimes Greg failed to opt in then there will be a separate one after a song.
    • Danny beard might be available. They might just tell Jamie not to come in and give it to Sam and Danni instead tbf. Arielle’s off Early Breakfast all week but is doing her new show on Thursday so she may be about as well.
    • Didn't someone say that Lauren is covering with Katie soon so she could potentially do it with Jamie. Or yes Matt with Jamie is an option they've used before
    • Katie’s posted on Insta how she’s poorly at the mo (bad cold by the sounds of things). Vick is off all next week and no way could Jamie possibly present solo (imagine!). So if Katie can’t present on Monday be interesting to hear what they do. Suspect they’ll be asking Matt Edmondson if he’s available, but not too many obvious options at all.
    • I think tracks like the NewEra Birds in the Sky one sort of highlight my issue with the Radio 1 playlist perfectly. Surely as a new music station it's the sort of song Radio 1 should be championing - a new Irish DJ duo with a song that is exploding in popularity and is right on brand with Radio 1 and has now reached the Top 20. Ticks all the boxes and has got a fair bit of play on shows Dance Party or Party Anthems. Yet months after its release it's only now reaching the C-List and making its way to daytime and with it being on the C-List will only probably be played a handful of times across the week. Whereas artists like Royal Blood say seem to get an open pass to the playlist.
    • Posted this over on DS but while I'm sure there are probably reasons behind this it's weird optics how easily Radio 1 were able to cut time off Newsbeat this week purely it seems for a petty tit-for-tat gesture at Capital's new show but then weren't prepared to show any level of flexibility with reducing Newsbeat’s length a few weeks back when Mollie was supposed to finish their Comic Relief challenge for the day at around 5.45pm (with the DJs all but asking to delay Newsbeat). I guess the issue with the 5.45pm Newsbeat is that it also airs on 1Xtra and Asian Network but surely you could still air those as normal on those two stations and then do a separate Radio 1 edition later. They've certainly done that before with the half past the hour bulletins.
    • I was really impressed by the Capital Breakfast show. Had been finding Greg a bit stale - he's a great DJ but there's only so long you can listen to the same features and same sort of topics Where Capital's show had that familiar feel with Jordan & Chris being ex Radio 1 plus Sian Welby is great. It felt a light, fun and pacy show which I sort of feel Radio 1 has lost recently but used to have say when it was Scott & Chris, Katie, Jordan & Vick and Matt & Mollie Even the music choices are more to my liking so far. which has surprised me given its reputation of the same 5 songs all day. And it’s not as if you’re not getting Tate McRae, Dua Lipa and Beyonce on every show on Radio 1 anyway. Radio 1's playlist is really not vibing with me at the minute - some shows like Party Anthems or Future Pop have some great new stuff that should make the playlist but too often doesn't or if in the off chance they do it's just on the C-List and heard once in a blue moon.  Whereas Capital actually surprisingly seemed to have got some of that on their playlist already like the new tunes by Becky Hill,Paul Russell and 5SOS.
    • And a lot of Radio 1 features or interviews are pre-planned and pre-recorded which they don't exactly advertise - things like Something Songs and Complete the Year and previously on Scott's show The Who Game for example. The giveaway is normally no mention of texts or the song just played if it's a non-song based feature. There's always a bit of smoke and mirrors in entertainment. Also while it seemed obvious to me the Greggs partnership was pre-planned (the Greggs CEO seemed almost prepared for supposedly an off-the-cuff call) it didn't grate on me hugely. Whereas sometimes with Radio 1 want something to happen or to particularly push an artist or TV show/film they can be just as stubborn and forceful as any product placement. See for example how Saltburn was near constantly mentioned for a while.
    • It does feel like since it was announced that Dean & Vicky will no longer be a pairing with the schedule changes like it's very often Dean or Vicky that's on with the other away as if both have sort of given up on the pairing. Combine that with that Going Home continuing to be a show where you can quite guess what combination will be in and it feels rare that the schedule is actually what it should be.
    • Was going to say if you want to save some face too have maybe a co-host join Danny - that at least to some extent would spare their blushes a bit and you have somebody to deal with the technical stuff (not talking over jingles, Whatsapp number). I guess the constraint is if the show comes from Salford and ideally you wouldn't want Vicky and Nat starting their new slot early. But then again there's Ore and James Cusack you could use alongside Danny if they're available. James always seems to be overlooked though when new positions come up under Aled.
