And vick just said Jamie’s not got a contract yet so don’t know how that works

Now can you do a show without a contract in don’t know how these things work

Does feel odd not having a contract as of yet and was announced as a permanent presenter. Is Jamie Laing on trial and they making it possible if he doesn’t work out he wouldn’t be on the contracted pay roll.

It's possible to start a new role then sort the contract later. I have done that before. Plus he has an existing relationship with the station.

I mean for being booked on as a cover presenter or presenting for as someone that is filling a specific time slot before a permanent decision is made like Danny Beard and Martha.

First half hour wasn't exactly a riveting listen - Jamie playing messages from celebrity friends wishing him luck..

which I think making it about himself and what the listeners have criticised his position as a co-host of the new drive show that could give that impression of him being out of touch and cringingly name dropping plus the fact he didn’t know the start time and the size of audience even if it. Was said in jest doesn’t help him on the show.

"I only have famous friends" - if he is trying to prove "he isn't just a posh idiot" this is probably not a wise start.

First thoughts: playing into Jamie too much, as above, the famous friends bit wasn’t great. The messages should’ve been to all 3 of them

Yes it’s Katie’s first time with having her name above the drive time door so yes. Also with access all apps it’s sounds like he never heard of the feature. Think if like joined the station which many people who want to get into the radio industry and make it national its a station that they wish to aspire to.

Jamie says he isn't just a 'posh idiot' but that's literally the persona he plays to on this programme.

Amazed by how little he knows about Going Home, he seems surprised by the dinner feature.

I think could least be aware to what he has signed up for and have a clue what is going on

I'm sorry - it is virtually unlistenable. I had hoped for better when it was announced Katie was going to be a part of it.

It is incredibly Jamie dominated.  He just keeps talking randomly.

I don't think it helps that it is basically the same show as before so the Jordan shaped hole is obvious.

Yep listened to the first hour or so and it did feel very Jamie focused and quite 'London Bubble'.

Radio 1 is often at its best when it focused on the listener and has listeners at its heart whereas much of the show was about Jamie's celeb mates and then talk about the Brits and then going through Jamie's phone in Access All Apps. I get the Brits one to an extent since Radio 1 always go big on the Brits but you have to hope it's just a first day thing and not the norm.

You'd have been forgiven for not realising it was Katie's first permanent show too.

And while you have Jamie saying he's been constantly grinding for this slot and has earnt it certainly hasn't come across on air.

Instead from his opening show alone he's admitted to initially not knowing when Going Home started and then some of its main features like 'Access All Apps' and 'What Are You Having For Your Tea' being a mystery to him. You'd have hoped he'd be eager to impress and all over it ahead of his first show on Drive.

Hopefully he is genuine in wanting to grind and quite soon we start to hear an improvement. But with that sort of thing 'Show don't tell' comes to mind. For example with Mollie King she clearly put in the time and effort and treated as a proper career and it came through on air. Whereas the less said about say Maya Jama the better.

Yeah I agree. I wasn’t expecting the Tea roll call to remain.

Could they have also changed Something Songs into something else? As like you say, it just feels like it’s a poorer product of the show with Jordan

I think Mollie King started of good with an initial five week stint as it almost seemed that hadn’t Mollie King been someone that could work well permanently it would’ve continued to have the Matt Edmonson & friends feel and pairing with different names as he did with Scarlette Moffat and Example. She quickly worked well as she had the impression she was learning on the job and wasn’t slacking or phoning it in. Where as with Jamie Laing he seems to be doing the equivalent of track suit and sliders to a business board meeting. Mollie has shown as someone who had listened to the station long before she joined and researched and always well prepared when Jamie didn’t seem to do his homework.

I think where as for when Nick Grimshaw took over from Greg James and then Vick and Jordan from Grimmy they had a longer period of time between their last show on their previous slot to their new drive time show, more likely fresh production and time to do some not to broadcast pilots and brainstorm new ideas. It’s all come out fast and messy and seems like they didn’t give themselves time to produce a new drivetime show or didn’t use time wisely.

If Jamie Laing doesnt work out and doesn’t sign a contract atleast a Vick & Katie show would work without having to focus on yet again re-shuffling programming on the station, yet again.

Maybe an unpopular opinion from me on this one - I didn't mind it. I quite like Jamie, I laughed out loud every time I listened to him when he was on with Matt, and the show today was quite entertaining. I'm not overly upset that he's posh or not really clued up on the opportunity he has been given - it's a job he's getting paid for, and someone decided to hire him, so that's not really his fault. He's not stuck up and he's able to laugh at himself, so he could do well if he knuckles down and at least tries to learn from the environment he is in.

My problem is that it was a bit crowded.  I love Katie so much, and she always has such lovely and funny stories to tell, I feel she was cut short in a lot of today's show. Which leads me to my second unpopular opinion - without Jordan there, I would have just preferred it to be Katie and Jamie.  I'm not the biggest fan of Vick. I have tried, but I find her too giggly and not always forthcoming with anything other than innuendo.  Personally, I can see why they brought Katie in last minute to save the dynamic, but as a trio I think there is too much going on.

Will have to see how it develops I suppose, but Vick on air admitted how the show has always had such a mixture of presenters because of everyone taking holidays, so it does make me wonder how often the 3 of them will be together anyway.

Oh I suppose I want to add to what I just said about not minding Jamie and being okay with him getting the drive slot - I would feel completely differently if it had been Katie joining Vick, with Jamie as the last minute third host.  If that had happened then I would feel annoyed at an unnecesary celebrity hire had been brought in - I hated the Maya Jama - Scott -Chris Friday situation when that was going on. I do think Jamie is better than Maya was though, in many ways.

    • Oh.. i agree definitely a massive opportunity. I suppose in terms of Radio 1, there's potentially an opportunity to join the Friday early breakfast rotation next year if any of them impress the bosses.
    • Yes - but it's still better than nothing.  At one point when I fancied a radio career I would still have loved that.   As for the representation point.  The BBC is more often accused of over-representation of minorities rather than under-representation, so I find any agenda here hard to believe. Sorry to say it but we can only assume the reason there is less diversity in the selection is simply that they didn't deem those that would have brought this worthy enough.   That's surprising in itself I admit but the BBC is the last organisation I can imagine following an agenda not to be inclusive.

    • It's still a massive opportunity, but surely some of them will feel short changed compared to previous Christmas takeover.. in that it's a pre recorded slot on Anthems, rather than a live daytime show on Radio 1 itself?
    • “I really do enjoy doing this show. I love it.” “Are you trying to claim it? Bowfluencer.” “Hello? What do you mean hello?” A Nativity Icon and a Mid-December Surge of Chaos Scott opened with one of the all-time funniest clips he’s found this festive season: a schoolboy giving the most committed nativity performance imaginable. “Let’s all attack today with the energy of that boy,” he beamed, and it set the tone. He previewed the day’s extraordinary guest, Rowan Atkinson, calling him “a British legend of silver screed and my TV favourite, Mr Bean.” The excitement was genuine — fans know Scott has adored Bean, Blackadder and Johnny English for decades. He also teased Strictly Come Daniel’s long-awaited result, promising an emotional finale to the Breakfast Show’s most wholesome December storyline. Christmas Tree chatter with Tina and Ellie Tina and Ellie joined Scott just as he finished “Stop the Cavalry” and immediately they were dissecting the great 90s Christmas-light aesthetic: “Do you remember… we were all putting our Christmas tree lights on the flash setting?” Ellie recalled her own home rules: “You get the flash-flash-pause-flash-flash or the gentle gradual flash.” Scott proudly declared himself “on trend” this year for his giant Christmas tree bow, joking that influencers like Stacey Solomon and Alex Jones had all followed him — “Bowfluencer.” Tina teased him gently as always. From there, they analysed a hilariously minimalist shopping centre display in Hull (“Is that saying Christmas to you?”), and listeners sent in evidence of low-effort décor nationwide. The three of them broke into full nostalgia mode over fibre-optic trees, tinsel explosions and the “club lights” of 90s living rooms. This segment lasted ages because, as always, the show’s big secret is that Scott, Tina and Ellie genuinely enjoy each other’s company — fans listening can feel it every morning. Listener Bows, Wheelie Bins and Dark Showers Return The loyal Faithfuls were out in force. A listener added bows to their wheelie bins and asked if that made them a “binfluencer.” “Yes, it does,” declared the trio instantly. Another listener reported yet another “dark shower,” something Scott and Tina have turned into an unlikely 2025 wellness trend; Thursday’s data point came from Amit in Leicester, who proudly said he’d washed his legs too. Scott was delighted: “People really, really listen to what we say.” The show now lives in a universe where Christmas bins have bows, showers are mood-lit, and fibre-optic trees are family heirlooms. Only Scott Mills could create this ecosystem. Understated Decorations and Hull’s Viral Displays Rachel from Chester sent a photo of her gym’s microscopic Christmas tree — “that’s budget,” laughed Scott as Ellie and Tina squinted at the barely-visible decoration. The Hull shopping centre resurfaced when Scott learned that Ellie once turned on the lights there in her local radio days, before the era of minimalist vibes. The three fell apart laughing at the memory of Rudolph hanging alone from the ceiling while the remaining reindeer lay on the floor, “like Rudolph’s done something really bad.” The Great Christmas Chip Debate Ellie brought one of the morning’s biggest cultural revelations: Northern Ireland’s “Christmas chip.” Scott was floored. “Where’s this been all my life?” he asked as she described chips smothered with turkey, ham, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts, cheese, gravy and cranberry sauce. Listeners insisted it’s never meant to be gated to Northern Ireland — Wales even claimed to offer it too. Scott vowed to find one, even if it required “a flight to Belfast later.” Pause for Thought: Graham on Names, Not “Mate” Graham Daniels delivered a brilliant Pause for Thought all about the power of names. Tired of being called “mate” everywhere he went, he explained: “Hearing my actual name is a reminder that I’m not anonymous in the universe.” Scott adored it and signed off cheekily: “Thanks, Graham. Mate.” Their friendship is one of the warmest recurring features on the show. Strictly Come Daniel – The Grand Finale Daniel rejoined the show after weeks of preparation for his workplace Strictly. Scott replayed the highlights of his journey, including Shirley Ballas’ advice to “press that little button” and “you will be a star.” Daniel described the nerves, the slip-ups, the spin he finally nailed, and the huge crowd at his black-tie work Christmas do. Scott asked the nation’s big question: “Daniel… did you win?” The answer: “I won.” Followed by screaming, applause and Scott shouting, “He only went and won it!” Daniel revealed he got straight tens — 30 points — and the audience vote too. Listeners cried, cheered and texted thousands of messages. Scott declared him “the people’s champion.” It was one of the year’s sweetest Breakfast Show arcs. Rowan Atkinson Rowan Atkinson arrived just after 8:30 and Scott was almost overwhelmed. “I can’t believe that we’ve got Rowan Atkinson on this show,” he said, explaining that Rowan rarely gives interviews. Rowan confirmed it: “I’m not a lover of interviews… only if I’m really, really forced.” But he was warm and funny, delighted to be there. Scott asked about Rowan’s total absence from social media. Rowan explained he finds being disconnected “fantastically relaxing,” though he conceded he sometimes wonders what people say about him. He shared an absurd online discovery: someone had posted his alleged IQ — “176” — despite him never having taken such a test: “Complete and utter fabrication.” Scott was howling. Rowan took Scott through his engineering background, meeting Richard Curtis at Oxford and how their partnership began with a surreal sketch where he spoke only in gobbledygook and tried to hand audiences a mysterious piece of paper. Scott loved the image of baby-Bean emerging from experimental university theatre. Rowan described their first show, Not the Nine O’Clock News, and the decades-long partnership that followed. They revisited the legendary 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. Rowan said he simply focused on the job: “You forget about the 80,000 people… and the two and a half billion across the world. You just try and make the joke work.” It was a rare insight into the performer behind an iconic global moment. Scott asked how “Mr Bean” got his name. Rowan revealed he and Richard Curtis literally went through vegetables — “Mr Cauliflower” and “Mr Courgette” among them — before landing on Bean because the “B” sound is funny. Scott nearly collapsed laughing. They then discussed Rowan’s new Netflix series Man vs Baby. Rowan plays caretaker Trevor Bingley, doing live sound effects for a nativity play — wind noises included. Rowan even recreated them in studio, to Scott’s childlike delight. He revealed he bought BBC sound effects records as a kid, prompting Scott to say he did the same — “We’re all in the same club.” Their shared nerdiness was unexpectedly adorable. Finally they discussed Love Actually. Rowan confirmed that in early drafts, his character was literally an angel. He also remembered filming the Selfridges scene with Alan Rickman: “It sort of drove Alan up the wall… being kept up quite so late,” he laughed. He said he might “catch up with it again” this Christmas. They ended warmly, Scott calling it “a pleasure and privilege” to meet him. The Birthday Game – Back Into Chaos Today’s caller was Laurie from Lincolnshire who had Scott on her bucket list. After rejecting Gabrielle Aplin and Human League, she gambled on option three… and unleashed Mr Blobby yet again. Scott groaned: “What are you doing to me, Laurie?” But she loved it, and so did her son. Vernon, meanwhile, prepared to storm the studio. Scott Hands Over to Vernon Kay Vernon arrived in full mischief mode, laughing about press coverage claiming the two of them were “having a doo-doo” because they keep telling each other “I love you” on air. Scott teased tomorrow’s enormous guest lineup: “Kylie Minogue… Greg Davies… Michael Palin. Three huge guests.” Vernon countered with a wall of Kylie song-title puns. • It’s strange because I generally feel like R1 do this so well, we have a whole range of voices, accents, styles of presenting on the station so it is odd that we have ended up in this situation.    There are also significantly fewer of them than in previous years which may have played a part in it
    • Hmm, the output of the BBC has a duty to represent society as a whole, and this includes those seen and heard on air. This needs to include minority and marginalised groups, to ensure everyone feels included and that the BBC is for them, so this feels like a bad move.
    • Who says it’s supposed to be representative of society? It’s just supposed to find the best new talent, the future of the station. It’s also not a 1Xtra initiative (which is not to say that some of its presenters haven’t gone on to host on 1Xtra but that doesn’t mean the point is to help 1Xtra).
    • Disagree. They're meant to be representative of society. I find it hard to believe they can't find a black presenter worthy of a slot. Talent that could help 1Xtra.
    • What a strange way to think. They should have been going for the best presenters, doesn’t matter what colour they are. If that just so happens to be no black people then so be it.
    • January Winters is on Radio1 Dance on Boxing Day 6pm/8pm Jasmine Rowland is on Radio1's Soundsystem Party 7pm/9pm not doing an anthems slot
    • Daryl Jenkins Dixon is on the Indie show, yes she's done it before but she's still relatively new to Radio 1. Nathan X is back aswell on the Drum and Bass Show.
    • I don't think it sends out a good message that there's not a single black presenter in the list this year. Are you telling me none were worthy of including?
    • Intresting there is no New Presenters for R1 Soundsystem Party, New Music Show, Dum & Bass Show or Indies Show
    • Emil Franchi in for Jerry/Jamie on Going Home on Tuesday 16th December 2026
