That Friday (6th June) seems a proper Lauren bonanza given Lauren Redfern is also on Friday Early Breakfast that month. And as mentioned a few posts before Lauren Layfield is in for Sam & Danni.
-
They do seem to be listed together for that weekend at the end of May but given Ore is already listed to be covering for Vicky that Friday you wonder if the schedule might change.
-
Wouldn't shock me if (as seems to be the case) Vick is pregnant that when Katie gets back and Vick goes on leave, we get an announced 'maternity leave' line-up (perhaps including Jerry or Emil) to give a bit of consistency to Going Home. Plus it could act as succession if a) Vick were to decide post maternity leave she doesn't want to return to a full-time role on Radio 1 or b) Jamie decides to leave at some stage.
-
I sort of presumed Katie wouldn't be back until Autumn anyway. But yep even by Going Home standards (and excluding Monday as it was a bank holiday) this past week was a proper 'Spin The Roulette' in terms of the line-up with 5 presenters used across only 3 days. I do wonder how much longer Vick will be around - even ignoring the pregnancy (which hasn't been officially announced by her but seems an open secret) she has so many other commitments I'm surprised she's continued on Radio 1 as long as she has. Certainly of the original Going Home team if I was expecting one to leave it was Vick not Jordan.
-
Nice to see James Cusack getting a run out on weekday daytimes for a few days. Does seem to be a lot more unpredictability when it comes to cover these days - in the last few years it used to be that you'd have Nat cover Dean or Vicky on afternoons and Katie cover Going Home (then Sam & Danni once Katie got the Going Home role full-time) and that was as exciting as it would get most of the time when it came to weekday cover. For Going Home alone you now could have any of Emil, Jerry or Sam & Danni covering.
-
I seem to recall Vick and Jordan mentioning once on the 'At Home' podcast that they prefer presenting in a pairing/group these days. So while Vick might host solo sometimes it's only on rare occasions. And with Going Home it's very much treated as a multi-person show. So while you can do the odd solo edition those in charge probably think you wouldn't want a week of it. Plus I guess it's a good chance to get Sam & Danni weekday practice and exposure (and same with Emil). Because otherwise yep as you say Vick and Katie are both certainly capable of doing shows solo.
-
Have to say am really enjoying Emil on the show on the occasions he gets to cover. He & Vick seem to have that Vick & Jordan spark which is impressive given they've only done a handful of shows together. Between Going Home or covering Matt Edmondson you end up hearing Emil at some point most weeks at the moment.
-
Fair play to Chris in being so open about his cancer experience and it's great that it was caught early. Him being so pen about it says it all about the type of bloke he is and why so many of us on here are supporters of his.
-
Yep the Jamie Laing and Danny Beard changes have meant that recently when you the words 'Changes at Radio 1' you do sometimes fear the worst. While I applaud Aled for making the move to put Matt & Mollie on weekdays, their show on weekends was so strong it sort of made the decision for him. If they'd never reached weekdays it would've probably been one of the strongest shows to never make weekdays.
-
Certainly compare now to around this stage a year ago and things look a lot more rosy. For a few weeks back then it looked like it may be an afternoon line-up of Dean & Vicky followed by Jamie Laing & Vick. Meanwhile Matt & Mollie and Katie would still be stuck on weekends. Thankfully of course the further changes announced later that month fixed those issues.
-
Yep am back to enjoying the station - albeit maybe not listening as much as I might have say 5 or so years so. The Matt & Mollie/Jerry afternoon show to me is the standout and a worthy successor to Scott's old show in that slot in a way that Dean & Vicky never were. Always fun and flies by and packed with content. Do think the show slightly misses Mollie as her & Matt are such a strong and natural pairing. However, Jerry has done a very solid job as maternity cover. Greg is Radio 1's chief presenter and yep Radio 1 for now will be happy to have him on Breakfast as long as he wants it. He & Callum are a great pairing and the show does seem to have a new leash of life since Amy joined as producer. That said I don't have it as a much-listen the way i do say Matt & Mollie - some of the features like Yesterday's Quiz or All the Latest Things lost me long ago and Jan Slam as a competition really drags as the month goes on. Going Home - I just can't be doing with because of Jamie even though I like Vick & Katie. By all accounts though the show isn't necessarily hitting the way Vick & Jordan's stint did and the line-up is incredibly inconsistent in terms of presenters to the extent that either Lorraine is probably silently tutting. It feels like the only guarantee is that it'd won't be all of Vick, Katie and Jamie on together from Monday to Thursday. With Dean fair to say IAC didn't work out quite how he might've hoped and following that and the changes last year him getting Breakfast post Greg look a lot more of a long shot now. Weekends wise - James Cusack and Sam & Danni have settled in their new shows very quickly. James is perfect for that type of day and you can tell why Sam & Danni are seen as the future of Radio 1. S&D both have that sort of mischief and fun that Scott very much had on Radio 1 One great these last few months has been having more of Emil Franchi and James Cusack. Both always a great listen and fit Radio 1 like a glove. James finally on Radio 1 in a regular slot which so many of us called for for so long. Emil hadn't been on Radio 1 for ages before October but has been on loads since and even getting weekday daytime cover presenting alongside Jerry when Matt is away - long may it continue. The only thing I struggle with sometimes is the playlist. It's not always for me and if you listen to multiple shows then you can very quickly tire of tracks. So Scott going to Radio 2 Breakfast works perfectly for me.
-
Emil must've impressed during that October spell on weekend afternoons - he seems to be the go-to 'supply teacher' at the moment on afternoons (weekday or weekend) since. Emil and Jerry were quite a fun pairing last time so it'll be good to have them for a few days longer this time. Though I guess all the duos/trios on the stations mean there's slightly less demand for a supply teacher these days compared to the Jordan North 2018-2020 days.

The article sounds like a load of nonsense. Isn't that how Radio 1 has always been to an extent? The likes of Moyles and Mills were hardly big names when they joined and same more recently was probably true for the like of Clara and Greg - though of course he's still on Radio 1. Over time they then become big names themselves. Plus if Radio 1 had kept the 'big names' you'd no doubt have the opposite article by the Daily Mail criticizing them for paying big money and not giving opportunities to newer presenters. And shock horror presenters leave stations over time - says it all that 2 of the examples in the graphic they gave of the 'exodus' are from 2021. And of the more recent ones you can hardly blame Jordan and Scott for going for the opportunities that were offered to them. And it's not like the station is 'full of nobodies'. Vick & RMC were big hires from commercial radio, Jack Saunders has fronted Glastonbury coverage, Greg is one of the most well-known radio names, Pete Tong is well-respected in the dance world and the likes of Danny Howard, Charlie Hedges and Arielle Free are also quite well known names in the dance world.
-
One thing I will say is that towards the end of Dean & Vicky's run I did seem to notice there was a lot of cover by Ore & Nat.
-
Now to the other stations. Obviously too Capital saw some big changes with Roman Kemp leaving Breakfast and Jordan taking his place. While it's a shame Jordan left Radio 1 and the 'thrupple' of him, Vick and Katie came to an end doing a big Breakfast show has very much been his goal so you can understand why he jumped at the chance. Especially as if Greg stays a while longer at Radio 1 there's a risk Jordan's opportunity at Radio 1 Breakfast would've come and gone. I think many of us though had assumed Jordan & Katie were dead-certs to succeed Greg on Breakfast so Jordan's departure leaves that successor role open. And of course forum favourite Scott Mills finally has a Breakfast Show come January and the biggie too in Radio 2 Breakfast. With that, his RATW appearance and his marriage this year has been a very eventful and successful one for him and it's great to see things going so well for somebody who absolutely deserves it.
-
I do think it's ended up a lot better than many of us anticipated. To begin with Radio 1. Those initial Radio 1 changes were a mixed bag to put it mildly - Jordan's departure (and Radio 1's cold response to it) and then the choice of Jamie Laing as replacement did not go down well at all. It left Radio 1's weekday schedule looking really feeble. Them then adding Katie to Going Home - which seemed to be a response to the negative reaction - was great news and what should've happened in the first place. But then again having Danny Beard as interim for Katie's weekend show was a complete misfire. However, Matt & Mollie moving to weekdays was a lovely surprise - many of us had assumed Matt at least was on the way out but they got a well-deserved promotion to weekdays (finally for Matt after 14 years of waiting). Their weekend show was a crowd favourite and the weekday show has continued in that vein and brings back that Scott & Chris vibe to the slot. It was needed too as Dean & Vicky's show was just not working. Similarly while Radio 1 took their time with weekends come January it's a great line-up with a real focus on the future. Many of us banged the drum for James Cusack getting a full-time show and he now has one, Sam & Danni show promise and an afternoon slot will be a bit more freeing for them than Weekend Breakfast. And if Nat & Vicky's pairing goes well maybe weekdays will be in their future.
-
You can't say this year hasn't been a year of surprises and changes on radio. Radio 1 has seen big changes meaning that come January only really Greg & RMC in terms of daytime will be in the slots they were at the start of 2024. Meanwhile Capital has a new Breakfast presenter with Jordan North moving over there and of course the big news to end the year that Scott finally gets the Breakfast Show With the game of radio DJ musical chairs seemingly coming to an end for the year, what are people's thoughts with how the cards have fallen? And of course - which current or former Radio 1 host are we all going to be waking up to come 2025? Will it be Scott, Greg, Jordan or maybe even Moyles?

The Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Scott Mills
coffeeandgin replied to abertom's topic in The Scott Mills Show
Well this is the day this forum has been preparing for since it began - we just guessed the wrong station at first 😂 But yep so pleased for Scott - Zoe's summer absence unplanned as it was now feels like an on-air audition and Scott clearly impressed and was much more like his Radio 1 self. Does leave us all with a major listening quandary though - which of Greg, Jordan or Scott are we all picking (or who knows maybe even Moyles on X)? For me has to be Scott. Though does now mean I can listen to both Scott and Matt & Mol which is a result. -
I presume that's just an error (especially as Thursday 8-10pm was the previous slot) by whoever did the release as otherwise surely they'd have announced that too.
-
It took them bloody long enough to announce! 😂 All jokes aside, great changes. Jerry feels an inspired shout to put alongside Matt while Mollie is on leave, those of us who banged the James Cusack drum feel justified and Sam & Danni will fill that M&M hole on weekend afternoons perfectly. Do slightly wonder how necessary a weekend Early Breakfast show is (especially at just an hour) but I guess it's a way to get Ore and Swarzy's foot in the door permanently. And best of all no influencers or Danny Beard in sight. Danny's spell hopefully now being assigned to the Lisa L'Anson section of the Radio 1 history book.
-
I think celeb do carry a slightly higher degree of risk and if a celeb isn't willing to put in the time, effort and learn the ropes they will get found out. Mollie King and Maya Jama are perfect comparisons Mollie joined and it's clear she very much treated the radio role as a full-time career and put the time in to learn and improve - it's mentioned she shadowed the likes of Greg, Scott and Annie Mac among others and learnt how to drive the desk etc. And now she's as strong a DJ as anybody on Radio 1. Whereas Maya was paired with Scott on Fridays to begin (so given almost the perfect opportunity to develop) but was quickly found out. You rarely heard her outside her own slot and her show was pretty thin gruel which was highlighted even more so by Jordan doing the same slot on Sunday 100x better.
-
It's become a running discussion point on here and elsewhere how ever since Matt & Mollie stopped doing the 1-4pm slot on Friday to Sunday it's become a bit of a lucky dip with no permanent replacement for Matt & Mollie yet selected or any indication of when or if there'll be a permanent replacement. In a way I'd rather they take their time and select a good replacement rather than Danny Beard it (in fact I wish they'd done this strategy with Going Home after Jordan's exit until Katie agreed to do the show from LONDON?!) . Who's impressed so far of those you've heard? Probably stating the obvious but IMO James Cusack and Emil Franchi have been standouts and could easily if they wanted to do the slot full-time from tomorrow. Both strong listens and had good features. Can't help both were slightly overlooked in the 2022 changes.
-
Given how quick Radio 1 and Jamie were to hype up Going Home's figures last time they are sort of conspicuous by their complete lack of mention and we know Matt & Mollie are the 2nd most popular Radio 1 show now (and presumably Breakfast is #1). In unrelated news, strong set of RAJARs again for Jordan on that there Capital.
-
Very pleased for Matt & Mollie - the success is richly deserved! The show is excellent and they'd been weekday ready for some time. There's no reason they can't continue in that slot for years should they want to. Have loved them covering Breakfast this week. This set of Rajars seem to have been a successful one for quite a number of stations in general.
-
Yep as time goes on I am struggling with Capital. Jordan, Chris and Sian are all great but it can get very repetitive. It feels like every time I listen I'll hear Benson Boone or Noah Kahan within 15 minutes without fail. And if you've heard the Bong Game a few times, you've heard it a thousand times. Though Radio 1 are also not exempt from that though and again unless you really like a small selection of artists it's sometimes best avoided at Breakfast. You'd be forgiven for thinking music didn't exist before Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Fred Again, Chase & Status or Rudimental - of course they'll be mentioned and played with it being a youth station but if you don't like one of their tracks it can be a struggle listening for an extended period. 'Alibi' was a perfect example - one of the lazier samples of the year (with strong competition in that category) and not exactly one of Rudimental's best but my word did Radio 1 play it to death.
