Radio 1's Major Daytime Schedule Changes: One Year On

Next Tuesday marks exactly a year since brand new schedule changes kicked in to replace Grimmy and Annie. Seeing as there's about to be even more changes next week, I thought now would be a good time to reflect on a year of the current schedule before Dean and Vicky etc. start.

So what is everyone's thoughts on RMC in live lounge slot, Vick and Jordan on drive, Clara on future sounds, Sian on Powerdown Playlist, Victoria Jane's new show, Dean on weekend mid mornings and finally Danny and Sarah's new shows on Friday after one year of hearing them all?

Clara Amfo just doesn’t work on future sounds sometimes I feel she doesn’t have the conviction the confidence and the authority of the tone when you are on the mic in ways that specialist broadcasters of the show like Annie Macmanus and Zane Lowe even Huw when covered. Love to hear ones passion the full force behind the songs playing when do specialist programme.

Future Soul firm favourite of what I like on Sounds. Hard slot to do for Danny’ think he probably does alright but not one bothered to choose to listen to.

Power down playlist nightly from 10PM needs to be axed and scrapped. Dean never gelled and at point would tune into the station less.

I like the concept of the mid-morning slot that it is mainly music but don't like the fact that RMC are doing it as they are fairly restricted and liked their previous late night slot.

Enjoyed Vick and Jordan at the start but seem less interested in it at the minute. Don't usually catch Clara unless I've left it on after 6, seems ok but nothing special. Do sometimes listen to Danny after the chart if I've listened to the chart and seem to like it but usually listen to the Capital Weekender as the music is more to my tastes. Haven't heard Sarah on Future Dance but seems good from what I heard from her at Big Weekender and also during the Dance Weekend.

Not heard Sian on the Powerdown Playlist but I do think they need a late show after Jack Saunders or extend some of the daytime/evening slots as 10pm feels a bit early to start pre-recorded content. I reckon Arielle could suit a late night slot if it's specialist or maybe a duo like Sam & Danni if they had a more entertainment like show. I think powerdown will probably fit better later in the evening.

Not a fan of Dean so happy he's off to weekdays (not able to listen then). Some shows he doesn't grate that much and other shows he does my head in which means some weeks I only listen to Anthems and other weeks I listen to the full show. I'm happy that there is going to be a Radio 1 00s slot weekly and hope that Nat is the right fit (not heard her yet) and also happy that Katie has got her first permanent solo slot as I like her cover but sometimes I find her solo cover bland so I hope the same isn't the case with the new slot.

I definately agree with thoughts on the nighttime slot as something post The Indie Show and The 8th is lacking when Huw Stephens did the late night show he was a voice could have on late night and listen probably would’ve liked Phil and Alice’s stuff. Think they need to go for more nieche genres and sub-genres of new and underground music between hours of 1AM-4AM again and maybe expand the Future line of show Future Beats, Future Bars, Future Bass, Future Fusion or whatever and the current future programming then. Slashing the Dance/Relax generic playlist programming that happens as through the night content.

I kind of think that Benji B’s Chill Playlists, Get Set, Chill Mixes may work and fit but doesn’t need to be collated to a 24 hour on-demand stream same with Dance kind of feels like when Alex Lester and Janice Long got kicked off overnights as a year experiment had different playlists across Radio 2’s night schedule. So no presenter content for the ‘grave yard shifts’ until they hired OJ Borg.

Think more presenter led and radio sounding content is needed in the night time. Think changes are needed aren’t that hard to resolve. Think it would be good to see better commissioning anyway

Think point of having mix of music and entertainment in the later slots of an evening is important. As much like Scott’s last words if bit low had bit of a shit day having a feel good distracting, something positive and uplifting something that can be interactive and bring the listener in whilst making relaxed whilst bit of a laugh. As it can be good time for injecting some comedy.

Personal favourites are Sarah Story’s show and I personally like having a Power Down Playlist at 10pm even if its pre-recorded. I think Radio 1 is in a good place with its specialist output at the moment.

For me personally I think a lot of the daytime changes simply haven’t wowed me because they followed presenters or shows I really liked and felt worked, which makes Radio 1 feel like its gone down a notch in quality in the last few years without meaning to sound too harsh! Dean and Vicky taking over Scott and Chris will no doubt add to that feeling in the coming weeks

I always felt like Phil Taggart was overlooked for a bigger show. Just his luck that a whole station based around his show launched shortly after he left. Sian has done pretty well taking over from him.

Biggest miss in Annie on a Friday night. Danny Howard was the natural choice to fit into the role and he does it well, but he doesn't have the same energy that she did.

RMC doesn't work on daytime radio. They were brought in to take over from Charlie Sloth. Charlie is great on Dance Anthems, and seems a lovely person.

RMC - I like them but feel show is a bit subdued compared to what it could be.

Vick and Jordan -  on the whole really enjoy, though at times feels a little overproduced.  They are at their best when they go "off script".

Clara - I thought she sounded great at first, but show seems to lack some energy and it also feels like Clara isn't involved much in cross-station activity in the way that say Jack is.

Powerdown playlist - bit of a switch off for me.

Dean - never really got into his show.  You can't like everything.

Danny - I actually really like him in that slot.

Sarah - Great show.

Jordan is definitely at his best off script and when he's just talking to the listeners.

Dean is like the radio equivalent of Love Island for me. It's never appealed to me and I don't think I'll ever get it.

Funnily enough there was a couple of years a while back where every daytime presenter would talk about what happened on Love Island last night. Would drive me mad ?

Wonder if Dean and Vicky would bring in any listeners in ways to create new listeners as some of Scott moves to Radio 2.

Right with PDP and with the points of Friday Night Dance too.

Yes think Dean can be but marmite and can be bit annoying. Really hope him and Vicky do good with it even with not my cup of tea. Do hope am proved wrong

I think given the longevity of Scott’s career and those who left. Think Aled is trying to consider and the management which always is a hard tasks how for teen or tween who may decide to tune into Radio what they want to hear and who the voices they want to have for listeners to grow up with

And perhaps that's the issue for some of us.

Gaydio has a particular style and he was maybe perfect for that but needed to amend his "act" a bit for Radio 1.  Same way as say Jordan North in his current style would probably never work on a commercial station.  (He has said the same about his time at Capital).

(To be fair I'm an openly gay guy who doesn't get drag, musicals or Britney ? )

It would be ridiculous to expect every gay person to like the same things like drag and musicals. But Britney the woman produces good pop! ?

Agree completely about Clara - she just isn't the 'musical authority'  to hold that show for me, but I don't see anything changing soon there as I have a hunch Jack (the only other current potential successor) will bypass that show and end up on Daytime somewhere.

I'm very much hoping that 'Dean and Vicky' is a significantly better show than Dean has managed. To be fair, he has gotten better, he seemed quite out of his depth in the beginning but I haven't warmed to him particularly. He was quite good covering for Scott & Chris once (with Katie?), so depending on the new duo dynamic it could be ok.

My worry is that putting together a new duo on air for a weekday daytime slot is always a risk. I agree that Dean works well with a co presenter to bounce off. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can't help but think maybe if Vicky had been on with Dean on weekends, then it wouldn't be as much of a surprising choice of replacement for Scott & Chris. As you say, Dean & Katie have covered the 1pm slot a few times. The whole relocating shows to Salford has played a big part in who they chose. It'll be interesting to see how they get on, as it's a quick rise to weekdays for Dean (a year), and even more so for Vicky (first permanent show on the station)

Maybe could end up being right about Jack Saunders but personally would be wrong if they overlooked Jack Saunders for the time slot. I think may said this before if he was moved to daytime even if weekend would like to see him retain a specialist slot like Huw did during his tenure on weekend afternoons.

I kind of feel if Sam & Danni join the station think Radio 1 should close the doors on co-hosts and double or triple acts for a bit at least until the number is diminished to a small few.

I totally think the choice of Dean and Vicky to replace Scott was the fact that A. it's from Salford and B. they are new and young and have potential to be a new drive show when Greg goes, with Jordan and Vick on breakfast

They could be on daytime a good 10-14 years I would say

I totally think it was governed by Salford though, if it had been London based, then naturally should have been Matt & Mollie although Matt is in the Grimmy/Scott/Adele zone now of being slightly too old to start a daytime show, and may just hang out on weekends and be main weekday cover, I can see them covering drive if J&V take the same leave

He used to cover drive for Greg back in the day

Radio 1 haven’t really had any “misses” when it comes to daytimes over the last decade or so.

When you think they bought Grimmy straight in to breakfast and he then did a stint on drive. Greg moved up to afternoons, drive and then breakfast.

RMC and Dean & Vicky feel like real risks in terms of, I can’t see them travelling around the daytime schedule. If D&V really don’t work out, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to admit it and try a new show there in a year or so.

With RMC, they’re just wasted on that slot. I did enjoy the banter and games on their evening slot, it’s just lacking so much right now. It feels overstaffed and there’s not really any point having them do such a music heavy, features limited show.

Scott & Chris always managed to get away a lot of music, but also squeeze in a lot of content.

Age shouldn't always be a factor. Ricky, Melvin & Charlie are all in their late 30's/early 40's and they've progressed to daytime. The Salford thing does add an issue, but yeah it did feel like Matt missed the boat for daytime a while.

There was a time a few years back when the 'B' team (Adele, Dev, Alice and Matt) were just as strong as the 'A' team imo, all missed out on major daytime slots with the longevity of Greg, Scott and Grimmy (which is testement to how good they are/were). The current crop of presenters that have come through in the past 5 years through till recently are having the opposite happen due to how many presenters have left/shuffled around the schedule since Aled took charge, where they're gaining slots and progressing up the schedule quite quickly.

I said it the other day but I do miss Dev and Alice on the weekends. They weren't must listen shows but when you had them on, there was no noticeable drop in quality from the A team.

I barely listen to the radio on weekends anymore, apart from when Charlie is on Dance Anthems. Phil Taggart's chill podcast is a good listen on a Sunday (Spotify).

Daytime:

I give up, I'll never like RMC's show. When they not talking or laughing over each other, they just introduce songs after songs. They still don't fit in at all. (This is about the OG trio, not the recent, mixed up versions like RM & Vicky, Melvin solo, etc).

I like Vick & Jordan mostly as they are, but would improve a couple of things:

  1. Whenever one is off, let the other present solo. The whole daytime schedule feels overcrowded anyways with this much double-triple acts. We need more shows with solo presenters IMHO.
  2. It feels waaaay shorter that it is. In home office my daily routine included Scott's show, then a quick nap, then going for a bike ride, and the time I'm back they're already at the Something Songs. I really missed the last half hour of Scott and still missing the 6-7 hour of drive. I'd prefer the simpler 4-7-10-1-4-7 schedule to come back.

Nighttime:

The station-wide Hottest Record right at 6 was a mistake, it's just a song after the news without any direct hype or buildup, and the weekend extension watered the feature down significantly. (A Jax Jones pop song as Danny's hottest record? Really?)

Clara: The music is great, Clara is great, but this combination still feels odd.

Powerdown Playlist: That timeslot could be used for something live, and keep the prerecorded stuff Sounds or R1 Relax exclusive.

Everyone else: I haven't heard them enough to form an opinion. Sarah's first show was amazing though! Too bad I missed it every week... for a year... maybe this week!

I find there is too much pop and chart songs than the levels of other stuff that Annie and Zane had with the show think I’d kept Clara Amfo in mornings but 09-11 with more music based show of new pop and mainstream songs maybe embedding the official trending chart in the show and having focus on the latest music releases and reviews, movie reviews and interviews with movie stars chats with Ali Plumb which would link in promoting his podcast and interview series embedding some of the content in the show, look at television and streaming must watches, gaming, festivals and gigs and maybe few competitions. An access all areas on culture and entertainment with in keeping the live lounge and bringing back an entertainment news bulletin

Rickie, Melvin & Charlie do find were the wrong signings for the station and just don’t quite work I caught them few times in the evening were ok and bit better there but not ones I’d hire stuff like Club Charlie did work.

I do think three one hour Power Down Hour Playlists is bit more excessive. Haven’t listened to much of Sarah’s show as haven’t been listening to much of dance think the excessive level of sampling sometimes and remixes of dance may have lead to a break. But would be good sounds listen. Right on hottest records

    • When Scott and Chris announced their departure from R1, I remember there was lots of speculation about who would take over the 1pm slot. Matt and Mollie were talked about a lot on here, and at the time I really didn't rate them as a replacement. A few years on, I see that I was totally wrong. They are such a good pairing, and it's the same kind of duo as Scott and Chris, in that they are real life friends, who spend time together in their real lives, which really does come across on air. True friends having a laugh together, and everyone is invited is how it feels to me now. I never thought about it before, but I agree with @coffeeandgin that Mollie is the Scott of the duo - pop obsessed and maybe a litte ditsy, but so funny, and in need of someone to anchor to or bounce off.  It seems that Matt is the kind of Chris of the duo then in that comparison, the one with the ideas, but also needs another person to make the magic happen. I know I'm outside of the R1 demographic, and maybe Dean and Vicky were meant to be younger and fresher, but I'm sure in my younger years I would have preferred to listen to two people who had a genuine connection and could really make each other laugh, as well as have the listeners laugh along. That was the Scott and Chris factor for me, and I think the only pair that come close to that now are Matt and Mollie.
    • Find Noah Kahan is just busker music. I mean I was pleasantly surprised that Ezra collective were in session for Jack Saunders on his new shoes and he is playing their latest track wouldn’t have thought few years back that at 6pm in the evening jazz music would be played. I hope if can get the green light and launch the 00s/10s station that the focus is on more new music be it pop mainstream and alternative genres on the main 1
    • Scott's show is perfect for the office. If Matt and Mol have a podcast I'd listen to that. All the fun without the Gen Z rappers.
    • Similar to SZA’s Kill Bill, the word “kill” had been initially cut out of Taylor Swift’s Fortnight. But it seems like they are now playing an unedited version.
    • Also hopefully won't get my head bitten off for this but I'd say of the current Radio 1 DJs the one arguably most similar to Scott Mills's latter time on Radio 1 would be Mollie. I'm not saying she's as good as Scott was to be clear but she is that sort of vibe. 'Future Pop' is exactly the sort of music Scott would be championing and you can tell Mollie has the same passion for it that Scott did. There's that Party Anthems link too - a show Matt & Mol do that previously Scott did and they bring a similar energy to how Scott did that makes it a fun listen. Matt & Mollie seem to just have that natural connection with the listeners that Scott & Chris did that you can't manufacture.
    • I find at the minute I'm a bit of a nomad when it comes to radio stations. Often the Radio 1 playlist really doesn't appeal to me these days and I did wonder is it just me tiring of new music but then I'll listen to Future Pop and Party Anthems and there's loads of tunes on there that I love and they're excellent listens but just too few of those make it to the playlist. Radio 2 may arguably be more to my taste music wise but also often feels too rooted on the past. Plus much of the content just doesn't appeal to me and verges on the 'mumsy' side. Plus Radio 2's new music can feel very 'middle of the road' - just because I don't enjoy some of the Radio 1 new stuff it doesn't mean I want Take That & Will Young as 'new music'. For me currently if I'm tuning in for radio it'll be Jordan North on Capital Breakfast, on Radio 1 Matt & Mollie, (if Jamie is off)  Going Home and Sam & Danni plus there's also Capital Dance and Mistajam. They all hit the mark for me in a way other shows don't.
    • Matt & Mol for me. For those that enjoyed Scott's Radio 1 show, Matt & Mollie are the natural successors (even more so than Scott's Radio 2 show) - two best mates doing a fun show packed full of content For one thing Matt & Mol inherited two of Scott's ex producers in Amy & Helena. Some Matt & Mollie features you could easily imagine Scott doing e.g. Matt vs Mollie and some feel near identical (can see 'Battletracks' taking the old 'Bangers' slot as it feels heavily based on that feature). Also while this may be down to being a weekend show Matt & Mol's show does seem to lean in a more pop direction and seems to deviate from the playlist more than some other shows- which helps as the Radio 1 playlist can be quite marmite and get samey very quickly. Something just doesn't hit the mark for me with Scott on Radio 2. It feels like it's aimed at somebody about a decade older than me and relies heavily on Noughties nostalgia. Scott too I feel works best with somebody else to work off and is missing that fun element he had with Chris and previously Chappers. It's fine but not something I'll go out my way to listen to.
    • Random idea time: condense all the throwback shows into one three hour show from 10am to 1pm on a Saturday, get Katie Thistleton back to host it (as Charlie does with Dance Anthems on a Saturday), call it “Radio 1’s Bottomless Brunch with Katie Thistleton” and just have 3 hours of throwbacks from across the decades, not just 00s or 10s, just a mix of everything. The occasional 90s anthem, tunes from the early 2020s, just 3 hours of pure feel good
    • I think it's great the amount of choice out there right now. I could happily listen to Greg or Jordan in the morning, Going Home or Huw Stephens in the evening, or Scott and Matt and Mollie in afternoons.  Still a few times when I'm channel hopping but maybe that's healthy to check out what's around.  As that research pointed out, Scott is good for minimal distractions. If you want some chaos I dare say it'll be Matt and Mollie offering that.  Plenty of my friends say it's the Radio 1 playlist that puts them off, even if they like the DJs. So Radio 2 is more preferable.
    • I quite quickly gave up on Scott’s show on R2 as I realised it wasn’t my kind of vibe. I do listen to the Scott Mills weekly to catch up, because I still think Scott is great, but there is just something missing (for example, he played out some clips recently of the old sleep recording app from the R1 days, and didn’t play ‘go and open the window Garry’ - or if he did, it didn’t make it to the podcast.) I don’t see them changing it now or making it any ‘younger’ than it is.   Matt & Mollie in the afternoon is something that I’m really looking forward to. They are such an interesting and funny listen. It has given me a different dilemma though, as 1pm has been the perfect time for me to catch up on the Capital breakfast show and takes me perfectly to the end of my working day, so now I’ll probably have to forego listening to that and stick with R1 for Matt & Mollie. These shows need podcasts because it’s already giving me fomo.
    • Even for the older Radio 1 listeners (of which there are still quite a few) Scott’s show doesn’t feel quite right.  (That’s nothing on Scott who sounds good but more the station sound and content). Since moving to Capital Breakfast I haven’t been listening to much Radio 1.  I always found the shows outside of Breakfast and Drive more wallpaper due to my working day and the show content of RMC and Dean and Vicky so Capital is just background noise to me after enjoying Breakfast.
    • I love Scott but if you're a 20 or 30 something that enjoyed his last few years of Radio 1 the Radio 2 show just doesn't translate. Stars from Neighbours or 90s singers just aren't my cup of tea and I can't get enthused about some has been at Radio 2 in the Park or some country music countdown.  Until that changes I will probably more likely listen to Matt and Mollie.  The Steve Wright fans think Radio 2 has turned into Radio 1 but it has a long way to go to win over the older R1 audience.
    • Radio 2 brought in Scott to bring the afternoon audience age down, but I feel with Matt and Mollie replacing Dean and Vicky they're going to be competing for a similar audience. Will Scott's show evolve to bring in more listeners or do you think they will be comfortable with the audience they currently have?
    • Yes I'm the same with 6Music. Huw Stephens offers something different.
    • They are an answer. I do listen to 6 Music quite a bit but kind of feel like it isn’t for me unlike the New Music Fix Daily, Huw Stephens who I’d happily listen to. Think it’s a generational thing and music preference. But it’s like how 1 Xtra cut down Snoochie Shy’s nightly show to just Monday and with Wednesday and Thursday with just playlist programme. I just miss the days of having more choice of that time of night.
