Matt and Mollie to replace Dean and Vicky

Do wonder if further changes are afoot - first that Sun article and also noticed on James Cusack's Instagram that he's at Broadcasting House even though the schedule doesn't have him covering on Radio 1 the next few days.

Hope that Sun article is true - Matt finally making it to weekdays! Matt & Mollie easily one of the best shows on Radio 1 too so very much deserving of weekdays.

Thinking about it too it seemed odd to give the Red Nose Day challenge to a weekend presenter (though I'd rather hear Mollie on Radio 1 all week than quite a few others) - normally it's a weekday person a la Greg or previously Scott and Jordan.

These reports are usually right - I wonder if Dean and Vicky are going to take over RMC’s slot as surely they are committed to a non London daytime show.

Wouldn't shock me as then at least it's the same slot Monday-Sunday that's done from outside London. But presumably too it would have implications for the Live Lounge if that were the case. Though what would that mean for RMC? Time will tell I guess

The article does say that Dean and Vicky will be remaining on the station, so I’m wondering if this is perhaps a change being scheduled for a few months down the line, when Jamie has done his contract on drive and Katie joins Vick (and then James or someone else takes M&M’s current slot and D&V take Katie’s slot).

I hope this is true. Matt & Mollie are one of the very few shows that still appeals to me on R1. This is what should've happened in the first place, with Dean & Vicky paired up on weekend lunchtimes to build them up as a duo.

I wonder what happens to Future Pop? If it is surviving the evening show changes in April, I suppose it would be the right time to hand it over to Maia Beth full time who has covered the slot regularly?

I think Matt taking over from Scott would have been to like for like in some eyes now and no one big would have wanted to be the one who replaces him.

Where as now the dust has settled on Scott leaving so the new shows an improvement

I did say that Radio 1 has this habit of throwing curveballs. If you spoke to anyone on here a week ago Matt and Mollie were destined for the exit...! It seems big that they've managed to get them both to commit to daytimes.

I feel sorry for Dean and Vicky, they've been quite a good listen, and I assumed they were brought in to offer something different to what Scott offers on Radio 2. M&M feel more competitive for older listeners than Dean and Vicky. Like others say, perhaps they're destined for bigger things further down the line.

Also where does this leave the broadcasts from Salford?

This is huge news if true! So happy for them and it will definitely go down well with listeners. Also shows Matt and Mollie aren’t going anywhere fast - which actually was one of my biggest fears. 😊 makes you wonder if R1 team are actually looking into peoples discussions on here/on social media? Does this mean Dean and Vicky at the weekend? I really enjoyed Dean’s weekend slot he used to have.

Really great news I think. After Jordan’s exit weekdays really need strengthening. And it is weird that the weekend afternoon programme is clearly stronger than the weekday afternoon programme (IMO). Dean and Vicky IMO hasn’t worked and they really now need to ensure they keep all their strongest presenters - including Matt and Mollie.

BUT weekdays could sound very London/southern - Greg, RMC, M&M, then Jamie Laing too. Unless they might be thinking of moving RMC and replacing with Katie? I like RMC though.

Fascinated to know if there may be other changes coming…

I wonder if this also shows that they’re not as hellbent on drawing in younger listeners with new, younger presenters as they used to be, and are focusing on retaining the listeners they already have over the coming years. Is this sign of a change in approach to come?

Yes I agree with this, as much as great news for me, it does seem to be moving in the opposite direction to pushing more shows to broadcast from Manchester which would appeal to the broader country. Who knows, maybe there’s a plan for Dean and Vicky to take drivetime, with Vick/Jamie Laing just a temporary thing over the summer?

I wonder if these changes will kick in on 15 April along with Jack moving to Future Sounds.

As others have said - this is another we couldn't have seen coming.

Here's an alternative potential for Dean and Vicky - Early Breakfast.  Still ticks the box of another daytime show from outside London.

Also note the reference to the show being 1300 to 1500 - didn't Jamie Laing mention Going Home starting at 1500 somewhere.  Maybe there is a plan or both Jamie and a journalist have got it wrong (very possible).

Now if they could start Future Sounds at 7pm like the Zane Lowe e

Very interesting when we all were certain Matt would leave this year. Tbey will be great on weekdays and i would have gone with them from the start Radio 1 took a gamble and it did not work in D&V, I wonder where they will end up perhaps a straight swap? As others have mentioned what happens with the Salford broadcast. Well the article says the coming days i guess we will find out soon and i think it will tie in with Jacks new show.

Why not? Drivetime could be anyone's within 12 months time.

If they were lining up Matt and Mollie for drive once Vick and Jamie’s contracts are up they wouldn’t be putting them on afternoons now.

Jordan North is proof of what happens if you don't keep your talent happy. Do we really think Vick and Jamie will be there next year? Nobody on here has been right about anything lately, so don't rule anything out!

    • Greg is doing Breakfast from 7am-11am on 23rd May which is a thirty minute extension of his usual Friday show and consistent with Big Weekend timings. Also it looks like from the 1st June, Radio 1 Chillout Anthems at 4am is being replaced by Radio 1 Anthems with Maia Beth and will also air at the same time on a Sunday.
    • I mean I've been growing our engagement on Facebook in my department, there's still an untapped audience there. Also, as you alude to, the number of community groups has grown a lot since lockdown. I'd love to hear more about their thinking. If this had been Radio 1's strategy I don't think anyone would have disagreed.
    • I think they must’ve been slowly killing of their social media presence I know for Radio 2 and 6 they do have dedicated unofficial social media groups so there is an audience. All Request Friday and features like that has a place on social media as can get requests via comment sections but I think Facebook struggles to know what it is these days.
    • I just think it's more about what they're doing. If all you've got is a DJ dancing to Beyonce's latest hit for thirty seconds or Sara Cox reading out the All Request Friday number in a funny way it's not really what Facebook prioritises. I think it's great that studio interaction, but it does lend itself to Instagram and TikTok more. But I honestly believe there is a place for Facebook with the Radio 2 audience. The trouble is Radio 2 have barely used Facebook for the last year so there doesn't seem to have been a strategy there.
    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
    • These late announcements are so lacklustre. It's not quite like the time they announced Harry Styles last minute!
    • Friday - Nathan Dawe, Wilkinson Saturday - Jax Jones Sunday - London Grammar, Remi Woolf, AJ Tracey
    • Probably got fed up of the usual moaning bastards all over it, asking for Ken Bruce and Jimmy Young back on air.
    • Think it may have been better to include Radio 1 in this and 1 xtra ultimately focus on boosting a BBC Sounds social media to bring the multi-generational content marketed to a broader audience through one singular channel and having a separate social brand skewed to younger audiences maybe they should consider just having a @BBC @BBCSounds  @BBCSport @BBCNews @BBCFresh (youth brand) social media acounts national.
    • Although a lot of their target audience do seem to be moving across to Instagram now.
    • I suppose it's because not a lot of people use Twitter (or X) so maybe it's not worth their time, surprised about Facebook though.
    • Surprised to learn Radio 2 and 6 Music are moving away from X and Facebook, I would have thought there's more appeal in Radio 1 doing that instead. Their target audiences still use Facebook, and it's still a key way to reach a good mix of audiences. Agree about X though, don't see any need for it. https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/05/bbc-radio-2-and-6-music-quit-facebook-and-x-publishing/
    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
