Agreeing with Graeme here. Best new pop might've done better in the afternoon?

Disappointing about anthems during gregs show. But oh well.

Party anthems at 3pm is not right. Most people are still in work then...?

Agree party anthems is lazy and should go and tbh traditionally the last hour/half hour on a Friday breakfast show has meant the nixtape or the golden hour so is a bit more justifiable. Also if Greg does this morning and/or Jeremy Vine or similar then he can go and pre record it.

Although i agree it sound a bit jarring at 3pm on a Friday, and that it suited the 6-7pm slot perfectly as a warm up/compliment to Friday nights on Radio 1, i'm glad they kept it. PA's is different to the morning 'Anthems' hour. It showcases the more commercial sounding brand new dance music/up and coming DJ's that wouldn't otherwise get mainstream exposure. Obviously quite a few other factors help, but quite a few tracks/DJ's that have had early on support have gone onto success both in the clubs and on the chart. Shane Codd is a current example.

I suppose the last hour of Dance Anthems plays some of what goes out between 3 and 4pm on a Friday, plus the launch of Capital Dance (plus they now play more than just remixes of the main playlist on Capital on Fri/Sat nights). Annie Mac and co focus on the more cutting edge end of things.

The other anthems shows i'm not much of a fan of anymore. It was much better when they launched it as Greatest Hits in 2017. Personally, i prefer hearing songs in full as opposed to being shortened and mixed into other songs. They are frequently repeated as well with how often they have anthems features (Friday 08:30-09:00, Going Home Anthems on a Thursday).

We got RMC in  for Clara

Mat and Mollie are covering for Scot and Chris Monday 4th  and Tuesday 5th

And Adel in for RMC.

A sign for who will be cover for who.

Wondering why Matt and  molly are in for scott and chris and not jordan

Here is a question for you @Lily Georgia how do they decide who covers who? do the DJs have to "book" leave like any other job, and then someone in a roster department finds cover? I assume you have to be deemed a competent to cover that slot for instance we have never seen Clara cover breakfast unless it has been part of a bigger event, or Arielle cover drive although I assume they could if they were the only option?

Say someone like Greg decides he is having the day off "Sick" or short notice like Grimmy used to a bit, then who makes the phone calls to cover the show?

I used to work at a radio station (not R1, think smaller!) so I have a bit of an insight into this, although I'm sure it varies.

Where I worked, around half of the presenters were staff and half were freelancers.  Staff had to request leave and have it approved - freelancers could just say they were 'unavailable' but we would expect a reasonable amount of notice (apart from sickness) so that cover could be arranged.  At R1 I believe all of their presenters are freelance.

We would have a list of presenters who could cover each show - their suitability would be based on profile, experience, other work/commitments, so lots of factors.  There would always be a preferred cover presenter for each show, and I think you can see that at R1 certain people tend to cover certain shows regularly - often they try to find someone 'similar' to cover.

If more than one daytime presenter were off at the same time then you would also consider how the day 'sounded' in terms of different voices i.e. avoiding 3 male or 3 female presenters in a row, for example, so there was variety to the sound as you went through the day.

Part of my job was to book presenters to cover leave but the overall decisions around who could cover each show was made by the editor - the manager in charge of the station.  I would make the phone calls to arrange short notice cover, although at weekends there would always be a manager 'on call' who could make those decisions too.

In my job, finding cover presenters was always fairly easy - it was much harder to cover a producer or newsreader who went off sick!

That's pretty much it. You can't have C list presenter who used to play a lot of music during their regular show covering A level show like breakfast. As well as that, the logistics matter. For example, there's no point in having Grimmy or Scott covering breakfast if Matt and Mollie are available. That was the case 10 years or so ago when Scott was covering Chris Moyles and someone else had Scotts show or Greg James (who at the time was on afternoons) covered Scott (drivetime), but now we see it less frequently. I think this has to do with current line up, which is quite strong at the moment. Just think about it, 10 years ago the weekend line up was good, but not up to the weekday level. Edith Bowman was former daytime presenter who was demoted, same applies for Sara Cox and Vernon Kay (but still they filled in for Chris Moyles sometimes), Huw Stephens was more specialist kind of a type presenter. Now there's Adele Roberts, Jordan North, Matt and Mollie, Arielle Free.

I think the higher bosses make a call on who covers who in case of sick producer. For example, if Greg James is sick, I think Matt and Molle will get the first call, if he's unavailable, then it's Scotts turn, after him I think Jordan North.

For Clara's show the obvious choice would be Adele Roberts and Katie Thistleton. If their unavailable, then it's Arielle Free.

For Scott, it's Matt and Mollie, Jordan North as they're quite similar presenters in their style.

For Grimmy, it's Jordan and maybe Adele or Arielle?

There are exceptions if no one's avaliable. For example, Matt Edmondson covered breakfast during Christmas period. Don't get me wrong, he was really good, it's unusual to have him without Mollie on such high profile show. This means that no one else was available without tearing up the schedule completely.

Thanks for the insight guys - What I have never understood, is why they stopped using Scott for Breakfast? I know COVID was very different and we saw him on again, but why stop using Scott in 2019 to cover Breakfast when he always has?

Just don't get the thinking

My theory but I think we could do with a ask Aled type section similar to Chrismoyles.net back in the day to confirm is possibly Scott didn’t want to do it anymore or perhaps pre pandemic there were more plans for him to be away to cover radio 2 e.g. SWITA, Sara or Zoe and if he covered Radio 1 as well he wouldn’t be on his own show very much.

I think it was just the way things were being moved forward. Scott had done about 20 years of Breakfast cover, which is incredible innings!

But we moved to a system of Weekday Breakfast being covered by Weekend Breakfast & Weekday Afternoons being covered by Weekend Afternoons (Dev & Alice).

The 1 cover that never makes sense to me is RMC covering Clara. They would be much more suited to covering Scott or Grimmy.

The zoo format of RMC on mid-mornings does seem a bit out of kilter. I agree they'd make more sense on afternoons.

I made similar comments the other day. I agree, mid mornings work best as a music based show, sandwiched between two feature/personality led shows. Adele, in my opinion is the best cover for Clara. She largely keeps the usual format, but adds in a few features from her usual show (when she was on early breakfast), it baffled me personally why they put them on daytime, then Adele on evenings.

RMC were brought in a few years ago to replace The 8th, and they suit that show. I can't see any benefit them moving to daytime full time anytime soon, or at all.

Cover wise i wouldn't complain if it went something like:

Early Breakfast: The Friday host who is on duty that week/previously on the Friday rotation or maybe Vick Hope

Breakfast: Scott & Chris or Jordan (i think it's time he depped on breakfast, he's more than capable and i'm sure much of the audience wouldn't complain!)

Mid Morning: Adele, Arielle or Katie as secondary dep

Afternoons: M&M,

Drivetime: Split between Jordan or RMC.

Future Sounds: Jack Saunders

Weekend Breakfast & Mid morning cover could now be a way in to give the newer voices more airtime and get the audience used to them. Certain people (if anyone reads digitalspy) go on about 'new talent', this will probably be the best way to slowly transition the schedule in the coming years.

Dance Anthems will likely be left in Arielle's hands when Charlie's off.

I would love an ask Aled chat, I wonder if he'd do a zoom meeting for an hour?

I had never thought that they had plans like that for Scott - he hasn't covered much Radio 2 since the summer? but yes, maybe the plan was to have him as the "main" R2 cover pre Covid

This seems pretty sound. I like the idea of early breakfast being covered by a previous months Friday DJ to give them a further outing. Adele or Arielle for Clara is a must.

I doubt Jordan will do Breakfast for the simple fact he’s clearly the next in line for it? (Years down the line of course..) but Greg never covered Breakfast.

I’d like Jordan & Grimmy to swap full time. With RMC covering drive!

I think it's time to move on. You can't have a DJ who's out of demographics and doing quite a lot of work on Radio 2 covering for Radio 1 breakfast. I don't say it won't happen, but I think he's not the first choice by now. There's nothing bad about this - as someone said, Scott's on Radio 1 for 20 years and sooner or later it's time for a change. I'm sure he'll get a gig on daytime or weekend Radio 2 easily. As i'm not from the UK and wasn't very much familiar with Terry Wogan till now, I did a lot of research on him recent days. He left Radio 2 breakfast being 70 and Ken Bruce is 69 now. I think we'll see him leaving anytime soon and Scott has a big chance to take over Kens' or Steve Wrights' (who's 67) show. It would be a promotion for Scott in a way as Radio 2 is a bigger station and it's getting more modern everyday.

Fair enough - But who then fills his shoes on R1?  He is, after all, R1's equivalent of Steve Wright - a 'Mr Dependable', who most demographics can get along with ...

    • Find Noah Kahan is just busker music. I mean I was pleasantly surprised that Ezra collective were in session for Jack Saunders on his new shoes and he is playing their latest track wouldn’t have thought few years back that at 6pm in the evening jazz music would be played. I hope if can get the green light and launch the 00s/10s station that the focus is on more new music be it pop mainstream and alternative genres on the main 1
    • Scott's show is perfect for the office. If Matt and Mol have a podcast I'd listen to that. All the fun without the Gen Z rappers.
    • Similar to SZA’s Kill Bill, the word “kill” had been initially cut out of Taylor Swift’s Fortnight. But it seems like they are now playing an unedited version.
    • Also hopefully won't get my head bitten off for this but I'd say of the current Radio 1 DJs the one arguably most similar to Scott Mills's latter time on Radio 1 would be Mollie. I'm not saying she's as good as Scott was to be clear but she is that sort of vibe. 'Future Pop' is exactly the sort of music Scott would be championing and you can tell Mollie has the same passion for it that Scott did. There's that Party Anthems link too - a show Matt & Mol do that previously Scott did and they bring a similar energy to how Scott did that makes it a fun listen. Matt & Mollie seem to just have that natural connection with the listeners that Scott & Chris did that you can't manufacture.
    • I find at the minute I'm a bit of a nomad when it comes to radio stations. Often the Radio 1 playlist really doesn't appeal to me these days and I did wonder is it just me tiring of new music but then I'll listen to Future Pop and Party Anthems and there's loads of tunes on there that I love and they're excellent listens but just too few of those make it to the playlist. Radio 2 may arguably be more to my taste music wise but also often feels too rooted on the past. Plus much of the content just doesn't appeal to me and verges on the 'mumsy' side. Plus Radio 2's new music can feel very 'middle of the road' - just because I don't enjoy some of the Radio 1 new stuff it doesn't mean I want Take That & Will Young as 'new music'. For me currently if I'm tuning in for radio it'll be Jordan North on Capital Breakfast, on Radio 1 Matt & Mollie, (if Jamie is off)  Going Home and Sam & Danni plus there's also Capital Dance and Mistajam. They all hit the mark for me in a way other shows don't.
    • Matt & Mol for me. For those that enjoyed Scott's Radio 1 show, Matt & Mollie are the natural successors (even more so than Scott's Radio 2 show) - two best mates doing a fun show packed full of content For one thing Matt & Mol inherited two of Scott's ex producers in Amy & Helena. Some Matt & Mollie features you could easily imagine Scott doing e.g. Matt vs Mollie and some feel near identical (can see 'Battletracks' taking the old 'Bangers' slot as it feels heavily based on that feature). Also while this may be down to being a weekend show Matt & Mol's show does seem to lean in a more pop direction and seems to deviate from the playlist more than some other shows- which helps as the Radio 1 playlist can be quite marmite and get samey very quickly. Something just doesn't hit the mark for me with Scott on Radio 2. It feels like it's aimed at somebody about a decade older than me and relies heavily on Noughties nostalgia. Scott too I feel works best with somebody else to work off and is missing that fun element he had with Chris and previously Chappers. It's fine but not something I'll go out my way to listen to.
    • Random idea time: condense all the throwback shows into one three hour show from 10am to 1pm on a Saturday, get Katie Thistleton back to host it (as Charlie does with Dance Anthems on a Saturday), call it “Radio 1’s Bottomless Brunch with Katie Thistleton” and just have 3 hours of throwbacks from across the decades, not just 00s or 10s, just a mix of everything. The occasional 90s anthem, tunes from the early 2020s, just 3 hours of pure feel good
    • I think it's great the amount of choice out there right now. I could happily listen to Greg or Jordan in the morning, Going Home or Huw Stephens in the evening, or Scott and Matt and Mollie in afternoons.  Still a few times when I'm channel hopping but maybe that's healthy to check out what's around.  As that research pointed out, Scott is good for minimal distractions. If you want some chaos I dare say it'll be Matt and Mollie offering that.  Plenty of my friends say it's the Radio 1 playlist that puts them off, even if they like the DJs. So Radio 2 is more preferable.
    • I quite quickly gave up on Scott’s show on R2 as I realised it wasn’t my kind of vibe. I do listen to the Scott Mills weekly to catch up, because I still think Scott is great, but there is just something missing (for example, he played out some clips recently of the old sleep recording app from the R1 days, and didn’t play ‘go and open the window Garry’ - or if he did, it didn’t make it to the podcast.) I don’t see them changing it now or making it any ‘younger’ than it is.   Matt & Mollie in the afternoon is something that I’m really looking forward to. They are such an interesting and funny listen. It has given me a different dilemma though, as 1pm has been the perfect time for me to catch up on the Capital breakfast show and takes me perfectly to the end of my working day, so now I’ll probably have to forego listening to that and stick with R1 for Matt & Mollie. These shows need podcasts because it’s already giving me fomo.
    • Even for the older Radio 1 listeners (of which there are still quite a few) Scott’s show doesn’t feel quite right.  (That’s nothing on Scott who sounds good but more the station sound and content). Since moving to Capital Breakfast I haven’t been listening to much Radio 1.  I always found the shows outside of Breakfast and Drive more wallpaper due to my working day and the show content of RMC and Dean and Vicky so Capital is just background noise to me after enjoying Breakfast.
    • I love Scott but if you're a 20 or 30 something that enjoyed his last few years of Radio 1 the Radio 2 show just doesn't translate. Stars from Neighbours or 90s singers just aren't my cup of tea and I can't get enthused about some has been at Radio 2 in the Park or some country music countdown.  Until that changes I will probably more likely listen to Matt and Mollie.  The Steve Wright fans think Radio 2 has turned into Radio 1 but it has a long way to go to win over the older R1 audience.
    • Radio 2 brought in Scott to bring the afternoon audience age down, but I feel with Matt and Mollie replacing Dean and Vicky they're going to be competing for a similar audience. Will Scott's show evolve to bring in more listeners or do you think they will be comfortable with the audience they currently have?
    • Yes I'm the same with 6Music. Huw Stephens offers something different.
    • They are an answer. I do listen to 6 Music quite a bit but kind of feel like it isn’t for me unlike the New Music Fix Daily, Huw Stephens who I’d happily listen to. Think it’s a generational thing and music preference. But it’s like how 1 Xtra cut down Snoochie Shy’s nightly show to just Monday and with Wednesday and Thursday with just playlist programme. I just miss the days of having more choice of that time of night.
    • Practically speaking, Riley & Coe on 6Music is the answer to that problem - but I get your overall point.
