  1. When Scott and Chris announced their departure from R1, I remember there was lots of speculation about who would take over the 1pm slot. Matt and Mollie were talked about a lot on here, and at the time I really didn't rate them as a replacement. A few years on, I see that I was totally wrong. They are such a good pairing, and it's the same kind of duo as Scott and Chris, in that they are real life friends, who spend time together in their real lives, which really does come across on air. True friends having a laugh together, and everyone is invited is how it feels to me now. I never thought about it before, but I agree with @coffeeandgin that Mollie is the Scott of the duo - pop obsessed and maybe a litte ditsy, but so funny, and in need of someone to anchor to or bounce off. It seems that Matt is the kind of Chris of the duo then in that comparison, the one with the ideas, but also needs another person to make the magic happen. I know I'm outside of the R1 demographic, and maybe Dean and Vicky were meant to be younger and fresher, but I'm sure in my younger years I would have preferred to listen to two people who had a genuine connection and could really make each other laugh, as well as have the listeners laugh along. That was the Scott and Chris factor for me, and I think the only pair that come close to that now are Matt and Mollie.

    Scott v Matt and Mollie

I love Scott but if you're a 20 or 30 something that enjoyed his last few years of Radio 1 the Radio 2 show just doesn't translate. Stars from Neighbours or 90s singers just aren't my cup of tea and I can't get enthused about some has been at Radio 2 in the Park or some country music countdown. Until that changes I will probably more likely listen to Matt and Mollie. The Steve Wright fans think Radio 2 has turned into Radio 1 but it has a long way to go to win over the older R1 audience.

    Ask Chris and Jordan

Capital Radio's breakfast presenters have been really chuffed with the lovely comments you've left about the programme, and they want to give something back. So next week they've offered to come on the forums and answer some of your questions. Get your thinking caps on and post your questions for Chris and Jordan here. And who knows, they might rope Sian into it too. They'll have the licence to answer what they want, and I'm sure you have plenty of questions!

  4. Matt & Mol for me. For those that enjoyed Scott's Radio 1 show, Matt & Mollie are the natural successors (even more so than Scott's Radio 2 show) - two best mates doing a fun show packed full of content For one thing Matt & Mol inherited two of Scott's ex producers in Amy & Helena. Some Matt & Mollie features you could easily imagine Scott doing e.g. Matt vs Mollie and some feel near identical (can see 'Battletracks' taking the old 'Bangers' slot as it feels heavily based on that feature). Also while this may be down to being a weekend show Matt & Mol's show does seem to lean in a more pop direction and seems to deviate from the playlist more than some other shows- which helps as the Radio 1 playlist can be quite marmite and get samey very quickly. Something just doesn't hit the mark for me with Scott on Radio 2. It feels like it's aimed at somebody about a decade older than me and relies heavily on Noughties nostalgia. Scott too I feel works best with somebody else to work off and is missing that fun element he had with Chris and previously Chappers. It's fine but not something I'll go out my way to listen to.

  5. Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false. Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global? He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC. Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful? It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going. Roman and Jordan have the same management team. Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC. They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer. They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him. If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker. Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan. None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones. It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.

  7. How can that be possible, when Katie said on the first episode of the new podcast that she got the call afterwards and was surprised because she'd heard about Jamie being announced and thought that was it?

  8. Also hopefully won't get my head bitten off for this but I'd say of the current Radio 1 DJs the one arguably most similar to Scott Mills's latter time on Radio 1 would be Mollie. I'm not saying she's as good as Scott was to be clear but she is that sort of vibe. 'Future Pop' is exactly the sort of music Scott would be championing and you can tell Mollie has the same passion for it that Scott did. There's that Party Anthems link too - a show Matt & Mol do that previously Scott did and they bring a similar energy to how Scott did that makes it a fun listen. Matt & Mollie seem to just have that natural connection with the listeners that Scott & Chris did that you can't manufacture.

  9. Of all the times not mention capital it's probably now? Jordan is flying on breakfast with chris & sian and there's a presenter on friday and saturday that doesn't know who a main r1 artist, tldp are. Mentions capital which surely has to be a big no no given recent events and then says the licence fee goes to me. Talk about vom. We can't have it on here no more as it's that unlistenable and I'm about to switch back for m&m, but this is a Maya Jama x50 level mess of a show. Forget fading the microphone down, the entire show needs fading down

  12. What an intro! Interesting how they're starting with Nia Archives 'Baiana' (a song which has been out for a year or so). Does that mean they are bringing a new mix of older and newer tracks? And is the hottest record now at it's old time of 6.30?

  13. The point I was making is this is not content made for entertainment it was a product placement. There is a difference between the two. It not a fun idea that people have brought to air for a laugh. It was designed to look like mates having fun and come up with this idea but it was just a advert. That why I say it feel false.

  14. End of week one. It's a great show actually and whilst we'd probably like some more of "chaotic Jordan" it sounds close to flawless for a new show. I am sure it helps a lot that Jordan already knew Chris and Sian well. Capital must be delighted as I am sure Roman would have been there for as long as he wanted so it must be great to have such a smooth transition.

  15. Fantastic 👏 loving the new breakfast show so far! Jordan, Chris and Sian are really natural together, but I won’t always be able to listen to the full show. Are there any plans for a podcast/best bits of the breakfast show for those of us who have fomo please?

  17. It's more engaging than I imagined Capital breakfast to be. Like others said, I haven't heard Roman much to compare it. It sounds like Sian and Chris have more leadership on air.

  18. I just want to add though that I am beginning to enjoy the show a bit more now that it’s settled in - I think Jamie (when he’s there) has calmed down a bit and then the new features that have been progressively added over the last couple of weeks have been good too. I still don’t think it’s a patch on Vick and Jordan together, but it is now a show that seems like it could have legs into the future and once Matt and Mollie start in July, I could see myself sticking with R1 all afternoon.

    Danny Beard's Radio 1 show

What a nightmare link at 11.15am this morning. Spent 30 seconds waffling about the name of The Last Dinner Party as if he’d never heard it before, then started mentioning Capital and the license fee, and how it’s been used to pay for him to be there, and was then cut off by the start of the next song.

    Jack Saunders' new show

Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV

    Jack Saunders' new show

My perspective when saying ‘alienating’ was from a listener , a new listener to a new music show where every track is unfamiliar can be alienating. When I used to run a music blog website and took my eye off the ball it could be hard to get finger back on pulse. I remember first listening to after 7pm on radio 1 and it feeling like a different world of music completely as a teenager- I think this format knocks them barriers down and makes a smooth transition from daytime playlists to new music show taking listener deeper down as show progresses yeah you are bang on with setting the agenda - what a great influential role to have

    Jack Saunders' new show

I would rather do the new music show than the breakfast show early starts, being cheery and entertaining isn’t my vibe and being hip and on trend. With new music it’s a different kettle of fish that could get my teeth into and enjoy researching and planning of the show and coming up with ideas and making my mark in away that I don’t think I have the ideas for a breakfast. I don’t see how it could be alienating but I enjoy the niche and speciality of expertise that new music shows gives it’s good spot of giving you the headlines and setting the agenda of mainstream music.

    Jack Saunders' new show

Jack has smashed it He was born for this show, he said he’d been dreaming of it and you could tell. Such passion and energy as always with Jack but in a show that can grab people’s attention and drag them down the rabbit hole of new music if you had a keen interest in discovering new music but haven’t in a while, new music shows can be alienating with no familiarity until you ‘get into it’ - the new show has ensured you can ease into to get back into sync . i love the Zane influences - he will be the forefront of where every emerging and returning artist wants to be with this show . Very excited for this chapter

  34. I think tracks like the NewEra Birds in the Sky one sort of highlight my issue with the Radio 1 playlist perfectly. Surely as a new music station it's the sort of song Radio 1 should be championing - a new Irish DJ duo with a song that is exploding in popularity and is right on brand with Radio 1 and has now reached the Top 20. Ticks all the boxes and has got a fair bit of play on shows Dance Party or Party Anthems. Yet months after its release it's only now reaching the C-List and making its way to daytime and with it being on the C-List will only probably be played a handful of times across the week. Whereas artists like Royal Blood say seem to get an open pass to the playlist.

  35. That or Connor Coates or Charlie Tee. If there is a specific designated live dance show across digital radio and BBC Sounds able to be plugged into cars, at home and in public spaces which are how Radio 1’s listeners mostly listen to the station live that isn’t a simulcast. The station could consider to not play many dance tracks in that morning slot to give distinctions between the two programmes. It would be interesting if this could also be the time where Charlie Hedges leaves Rickie and Melvin to become the DJ for this morning show with Rickie & Melvin for weekend afternoons and something different for mid-mornings all together on the flagship 1 station

  39. Off topic, because not really relating to Jordan’s show specifically, but one thing that struck me when I was listening back today is the words they cut out of songs on R1 that they don’t on Capital. The word ‘kill’ is cut out of all of Kill Bill by SZA on R1, not on Capital.

    5 Live turns 30

I feel that Dotun Adebayo and his nighttime show doesn't get enough credit. I mean he's doing graveyard slot 5 days a week - I don't understand how he's functioning as a person! And his presentation style is unique, he makes the show sound like he's speaking only to you. I love to listen to it when I can't sleep.

  44. Listening to the whole show it was actually a great fresh listen. It was very very busy with lots of first show stunts but still little nods to the Jordan we loved on Radio 1. Also, immediately he feels at ease with Chris and Asian. He definitely feels more slick and professional though.

    BBC needs more Scott

There a reason commercial radio don't want the BBC to launch new stations. It would allow Radio 2 to split making a older station and develop the current Radio 2 more for our generation. It would make Radio 2 very appealing which is not what they want. I hope the BBC wins because we need more radio for us.
    1 point
  49. Got to wonder if the new Radio 1 station had existed sooner if Scott would have fronted it. It's an ambitious plan, at a time when I thought they'd be looking into closing stations, or not investing in DAB. I wonder if Radio 1 Relax will go? Anyway, it's good to see - and I realise it'll be a minor cost involved.
