Maybe an unpopular opinion from me on this one - I didn't mind it. I quite like Jamie, I laughed out loud every time I listened to him when he was on with Matt, and the show today was quite entertaining. I'm not overly upset that he's posh or not really clued up on the opportunity he has been given - it's a job he's getting paid for, and someone decided to hire him, so that's not really his fault. He's not stuck up and he's able to laugh at himself, so he could do well if he knuckles down and at least tries to learn from the environment he is in.

Nothing wrong with that - it'd be boring if we all agreed on everything.

Though I can't see you getting onto Greg's show next time it does the above feature with that take. 😂

My problem is that it was a bit crowded.  I love Katie so much, and she always has such lovely and funny stories to tell, I feel she was cut short in a lot of today's show. Which leads me to my second unpopular opinion - without Jordan there, I would have just preferred it to be Katie and Jamie.  I'm not the biggest fan of Vick. I have tried, but I find her too giggly and not always forthcoming with anything other than innuendo.  Personally, I can see why they brought Katie in last minute to save the dynamic, but as a trio I think there is too much going on.

I think there is a lot of truth in this...if they let Katie dominate things a little, this has the potential to be ok.  The biggest problem for me today is it was almost like Vick and Katie with Jamie as the star guest and focus of attention.

I think Mollie King started of good with an initial five week stint as it almost seemed that hadn’t Mollie King been someone that could work well permanently it would’ve continued to have the Matt Edmonson & friends feel and pairing with different names as he did with Scarlette Moffat and Example. She quickly worked well as she had the impression she was learning on the job and wasn’t slacking or phoning it in. Where as with Jamie Laing he seems to be doing the equivalent of track suit and sliders to a business board meeting. Mollie has shown as someone who had listened to the station long before she joined and researched and always well prepared when Jamie didn’t seem to do his homework.

I think Matt works well with anyone or on his own. A multi purpose presenter.

One plus I will give the show is playing the Mollie King Fajitagate clip. Always welcome - one of the all-time great Radio 1 clips

If any of the show need a content idea then an "official" chart of the best Radio 1 clips is one I can give for free.

Now this would be an all-time-favourite feature, I love it already! It could rival the Bamboleo 'gap', and even Innuendo Bingo. You need to send this to the BBC bods and see if they'll run with it!

I agree, this could be a success if Katie is the one steering the ship. It felt like she was at times today, getting things back on track when it was slipping, but your point about them treating Jamie as star guest is spot on.  My hunch is that they were being kind and trying to make him not feel like the outsider, given how often they have broadcast together. But they can't carry the show like that forever, hopefully it will settle to a point where everyone is comfortable with what they are doing

As much as I am really happy for Jordan getting capital breakfast I am gutted he left drivetime hopefully the new show will bed in I would think his contract will be a year minimum so we will have them for that period

Will have to see how it develops I suppose, but Vick on air admitted how the show has always had such a mixture of presenters because of everyone taking holidays, so it does make me wonder how often the 3 of them will be together anyway.

I so agree with this but was too scared to say it as I felt I was in my own!

I am sad Jordan’s gone, but I think I laughed more listening to today’s show than I ever have when it was Vick and Jordan.

It just shows how we are all different and have different humour as I would have laughed out loud most days with Jordan there and at best I tolerated today.

Controversially I also didn't mind it. I don't think Jamie adds anything more to the programme than if it was just Katie and Vick, and it's different to Vick and Jordan, but I'd listen again.

I’m quite sure that Jamie is playing a bit of a character, a bit of a fool and I imagine that on some level the intention is to be an everyman – most listeners don’t know late afternoon is usually the second biggest show, about RAJARs or whatever. And they’ve obviously decided to pitch this as Jamie joining two regulars, which makes sense. Of course he knows about the show features. Apart from cover, they’ve done demo shows. I think a lot of people want him to fail and are predisposed to think the worst of him, but it surprises me that people are buying the ‘fool’ persona so readily.

I think if you were to go up and ask people what the second biggest time slot on radio it does depends on the station of course like talk based radio stations like LBC morning and mid mornings are the highest time slots to the ratings of Nick Farrari and James O’Brien but for mainstream music stations Radio X, Capital, Radio 1, 2, Capital Dance … it’s something i think people respect as the second largest time-slot as radio on picking children up on the school run going back from work in the kitchen. So theres a logical explaination for those who think about radio beyond flicking it on and just listening to it.

The persona doesn’t help because on stations like Radio 1 if you are playing a persona and creating a character that gives a false pretence to what you know and try to be different to how you normally are listeners pick up and wont buy it if you aren’t being natural

I there is something to be said about how with radio and reality television like Made In Chelsea that with reality show like that its a semi-scripted and planned persona to play a soap character version of yourself make yourself more entertaining. But with radio it’s such a contrastingly different medium as your job is to have a conversation with the listener and create a sense of intimacy.

I shall be listening to Will Manning on Capital this afternoon from 4.

I like Katie and I enjoyed Vick with Jordan so I will give it another go today but I can't see me sticking with it.  Jamie is clearly quite marmite and not for me.

Curious what they will replace Judge Jordan with today.

Judge Jamie - that would be carnage 🤣

I couldn't really listen today, when I switched on they were doing the something songs and it sounded like Katie and Vick were getting fed up with Jamie's interjections.... comments like 'lovely story Jamie, but let's hear what Listener's story is' (I forget the name of the listener, they used her name).

I was pleasantly surprised when I listened yesterday, but I do think to make this work long term is going to take a lot of work from all involved.

I gave it another try today and still didn’t warm to it and your comment is the biggest problem.

Jamie just won’t shut up but doesn’t seem to realise when he is adding no value.

We all know Jordan wasn’t  as random as he pretended to be.  He knew exactly what he was doing but that’s because he is a skilled presenter who is obsessed with his craft.

The contrast couldn’t be (Chris) starker.

Considering nothing else changed with the show yesterday - it’ll probably be Judge Jamie 😆

Though actually that would probably be one of the better things to carry over and give to Jamie - by its nature the best bits of it could often be when Jordan rambled away and built an increasingly mad story for Judge Jordan.

Didn't hear much of the show today but given Something Songs is pre-recorded slightly surprised they didn't edit that out.

Quite a few of the comments on Jamie so far sound very similar to the observations I'd have had when he was covering alongside Matt.

I think if he is to be a success one thing Radio 1 really should be having him do if it's not already happening is what Mollie did when she first joined and have him shadowing other shows and other DJs outside of his usual shows. Though many of the people you'd be getting him to learn from are those he'd have already or would be working with (Matt, Vick, Katie).

The more I think about this, the less I understand it.

Vick and Katie would be a good Going Home show without Jamie.

What did happen in the aftermath of Jordan leaving.  Did Katie initially turn it down and they persuaded her to change her mind?  Did they see the reaction to Jamie and see that they needed Katie to balance out the loss of Jordan?

Some odd chain of events has happened

From the way Katie has spoken about the opportunity on air and on her Instagram, I find it hard to believe she ever turned it down.

It really does feel to me like it was a decision after the backlash of Jamie. But this then raises questions about why they made that decision originally?

I agree though, I am baffled by all of this!

They made the decision because they had to get there before Capital to show they dropped Jordan and Jordan didn’t drop them

Well no, Jordan did drop Radio 1.

They probably wanted to announce someone at the same time so the headlines were 50/50 across Jordan leaving but also who’s replacing him.

    • The Summer on Radio 1 thing makes me wonder whether they might be doing something similar to last year again where they have a temporary schedule over the summer before introducing changes in September - maybe the new host won’t start until after the summer?
    • There was talk on my Big Weekend group from the council about them waiting for Ticketmaster to send an email out. They said they've been waiting a week. Maybe they're waiting for train strike confirmation first.
    • It’s on Saturday and Friday that week too. I guess this would make sense, as it gives them roughly 6 weeks off weekends until they start the new show?
    • Yeah he's on more than usual including this Sunday and then 3 more shows in May according to the above. Makes me think it's James for the weekend shows also
    • For some reason there is 'Summer on Radio 1' listed on Sunday 2nd June, could this be replacing M&M until July?
    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
