I think I got up on the wrong side of the bed but I'm really not a fan of these competitions. I would rather have seen competitions that appealed to more than just one listener. N Dubz and Jamie Oliver don't excite me so although some people might be impressed, as someone that won't win the competition, I'm going to find it dull radio and it just seems a huge ploy to build up the younger listenership rather than looking after the older audience who may disappear today. Ah well... at least it'll all be over by Wednesday.

I only found out about 10 days ago that DAB pocket radios were in the World.

I don't like these competitions either. I would definitely not want to hang out with Jamie Oliver, N-dubz may be a bit more enticing, and as to the CBB house - forget it!!

Incidentally, was reading yesterday that Kerry katona did not get in the CBB house because she failed the psychological tests. Would have thought that would have made her the perfect candidate.

Delta Machine, Depeche Mode - buy NOW !!

as everyone well knows i hate n-dubz. However i would have appreciated going karting so i could make dippy crash.

Ooh, didn't think of it like that...

I'm glad it's not just me who wasn't enjoying it- I think these competitions are a slightly rubbish idea. Didn't realise it's just this week though- glad about that. I did think he's have more interesting things to talk about this morning than "Go-karting with N-Dubz"- he mentioned it so many times it was getting on my tits. Not a particularly strong return, but I like the new jingles and hopefully tomorrow will be better!

Oh and are Rachel and Aled likely to be swapping back anytime soon? I miss her!

These competition prizes are v. weak... they smack of desperation actually.

Viv - I should have expected that the one line that actually offends me would have come from you! Please point out your comments are your opinions and not fact. I don't think they're desperation - I'm really proud if this week's comps they involve the listener at a time that celebs are few and far between. The prize isn't NDubs - the prize is hangin out with the team. We're doing it to celebrate 6 years and record figures so there are a lot of people who would like to win these. Thousands in fact judging by the number of entries.

So please don't snake statements about your opinions and dress them up as fact.

They're certainly not weak prizes. I would be happy to enter the Big Brother competition but I got too annoyed by the promotion of N Dubz and Jamie Oliver competition that I moaned about the whole thing so would feel silly entering for the BB prize ;)

I think it is more the fact that they have gone into corporate mode on the first day back whereas I normally enjoy a laid back show when it returns.

I'm a huge fan of The Chris Moyles Show, huge, and would love to win either prizes but on this one I agree with Jono. After three weeks I'd have rather the show continued as normal, or a big new feature, as in actual feature, not just a competition which they will bang on about for ages and very few people will ever get to reap the benefits. Don't get me wrong, wonderful prize and unique to the Moyles Show, but give us a new feature as well as a competition guys.

Chris doesn't like features so that ends that one for me. As for NDubz. No-one - except maybe Chipmunk, or JLS - comes close to giving us the kind of listener reaction that we get when we involve NDubz. Chart, online hits, text feedback, calls to studio, crowd outside Radio 1 - they are number 1 in all those fields at the moment.

They have a very large and devoted - very young fan base and each time NDubz are involved with the show their fanbase tunes in. It's incredible to watch. We're not saying every young person loves them but those that do - love them. Plus you're wrong re Chris - he has so much respect for them as artists. The humour comes from the totally different world they come from.

very young fan base

Very telling of the current BBC Trust attitude toward Radio 1. It should be more about music taste than age range- you don't have be be twelve to enjoy new music! And indeed it should be 15+ that are catered to...

Not having a go at you Aled, just the ridiculous policy correlation between music and age!

Because we can't be seen to be encouraging children to miss school.

Surely then N Dubz isn't quite the right target if it's workers you're aiming for? I guess it gets the listeners but surely it disappointed a lot of kids not being able to enter?

    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
