Radio 1 believes DJs are too old

RADIO 1 bosses reckon some of their DJs are too old for their listeners — and are looking at a batch of rising young stars.

Station bosses privately admit their best-loved presenters — like breakfast show DJ Chris Moyles — are no longer in the same age group as their listeners.

Radio 1 aims to pull in fans aged between 15 to 24. But Chris has just turned 35. Many of his production team, who take part in the show, are also in their early thirties.

Mum-of-four Jo Whiley, who hosts a daytime show, is 43, while weekend host Sara Cox is 34.

Radio 1 chiefs are believed to be keen on rising star Reggie Yates.

The 25-year-old co-hosts the Sunday chart show with Fearne Cotton, 27.

Bosses have also given trendy newcomer Nick Grimshaw, 24, the weekend breakfast show.

Moyles — currently puffing his way up Mount Kilimanjaro with a host of celebs for Comic Relief — still pulls in 7.3million listeners every day, which puts him just behind Radio 2 King Terry Wogan who has 7.9million.

But an insider said: “Moyles is the saviour of Radio 1 but the station has to look to the future.”

Another radio source said: “The breakfast show has to target our key listeners and lock them in for the day. Moyles has been on Radio 1 for 12 years and has hosted the breakfast show for five.

“What we have seen with Moyles is his listeners have grown up with him and are getting older.

“Now we need a younger crowd.”

Wow, Jo is 43. Never knew that.

I dont believe this article at all. It was probably something that a geek from radio 1 said to the papers.

When Moyles starts to loose tons of listeners, then its time to get rid of him.

So.......therefore (according to this article) Radio 1 would have to get rid of:

Chris (34)

Jo (43) *

Edith (34)

Scott (34)

Zane (35)

Colin (31)

Vernon Kay (34)

Sara Cox (34)

Nihal (37)*

Pete Tong ( 48 )

Westwood (51)

Anne Nightingale (66)

Judge Jules (42)

Trevor Nelson (40)

Aled H Jones (32) - not sure if he really counts.

Well that pretty much only leaves Greg James, Fearne, Reggie, Nick and Annie.

Somehow....I dont see it happening. If they got rid of Chris/Scott, then i'd complain that the whole lot had to go. Because they can't just get rid of him [chris] to satisfy the media.

* I'd be more than happy to see them go. :)

PS - All ages according to Wikipedia. No offence ment to those listed above if you are infact younger *cough* Westwood *cough*

I agree to some extent. But i think it's about how old the DJ's and shows sound, not how old the DJ is. For instance I think Scott's show still sounds young and appeals to under 25's, same goes for many other DJ's such as Tong, Jules, Westwood, Lowe and more.

However, there are some Dj's who's shows' do sound like they target an older audience and should, perhaps find a home on Radio 2. Shows such as Chris moyles, Colin Murray, Vernon Kay and Jo Whiley to some extent as well as others. Now I'm a fan of many of these shows (I listen to Murray nearly every night!) but they don't sound young enough to justify being on Radio 1 imo.

There's an intersting thread on Digitalspy actually, it's about Radio2 (who are also facing a similar problem!) where someone suggests scrapping Radio's 1, 1xtra, 2 and 6 music and creating 3 new stations, something like this:

Switch: As the name suggests, it'll be the young people station featuring DJ's such as Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Greg James, Fearne and Reggie, a few 1 xtra dj's and a few specialist DJ's such as Judge Jules, Huw stephens, Zane Lowe, Westwood, Mistajam, Kissy sell Out. As well as others and new voices

Radio1: A cross between the current Radio1 and Radio2 featuring, Moyles, Wogan, Vine, Chris Evans, Wossy, Jonny Walker, Vernon Kay, Ken Bruce, Dermont O'Leary, Jo Whiley, Colin Murray, Danny Baker, Gambo, Pick of the pops and more, playing current Radio2 type music as well as new tracks (especially on Whiley, O'Leary, Bruce etc) Also have alternative music at night (Murray, Shaun Kevany, Lamaque etc)

Radio2: Playing less popular specialist shows, possibly country, organ, metal, and possibly foreign language music. Also could be used to warm up talent for the other 2 stations.

I think the above idea is cool, although 1 problem pointed out, was deciding which station would be DAB only?

I think radio 1 would be safe in the hands of Grimmy, Mac, Cotton, Yates and James anyhoo :D

Sorry, but this wont happen. People have been suggesting it for over 10 years and the BBC once justified why. I cant remember the reason now....

Really? Wow.......

I'm only 19 and right in Radio 1's audience Range. I cant stand any of the above (Grimmy, Mac, Cotten, Yates, etc...)

I however prefer the shows of Moyles, Mills, Kay, etc....

I couldn't stomach a station with The Reggie Yates Breakfast Show or Grimmy At Drivetime. It still pisses me off that Radio One would rather sacrifice good shows and the large audience they have, just to satisfy demographs. F**k demographs - to paraphrase Bill Hicks, words that I may end up having tattoed onto my arm one day: forget your audience being numbers and statistics, and start thinking about them as people.

Hmm, let me think about this...

Grimmy and Annie Mac doing the Breakfast show...

Fearne Cotton doing the mid morning slot...

Reggie Yates doing the Afternoon Show...

Think I've had nightmares that pan out like that. They're easily the worst DJs on the Station.

Still, at least I have 5Live to fall back on. Victoria Derbyshire from 10, Simon Mayo from 1, 5L Drive's good too, and of Course Richard Bacon from 10PM... I know out of the two which station I'd listen to xD

If this is true, isn't it just the BBC giving in to Gcap's cries about the BBC not fulfilling it's responisbilities to provide radio for the 15 - 24's which happened a few months back? I bet commercial radio are having a field day reading this.

To be honest Commercial radio has a field day everytime they leave their cozy London studios and visit the places they actually broadcast to.

Interesting....in these credit crunch times, merge radio stations...and reduce staff costs!

Personally I think it would be a mistake...if teens and other listeners are still listening to any bbc radio station, why change R1 drastically. I think Chris Moyles and Scott still have a lot of mileage in their shows and they do seem to appeal to the target demographic.

Maybe bring in one or two younger presenters or co presenters.. if you really want presenters aged between 16 and 25...but not at the expense of losing the professionalism of the more experienced presenters.

Look at Sara...too enthusiastic and laddish a few years ago..now really entertaining!

And Colin is one of the younger presenters that they have and is sidelined on an evening show.

What saddens me is that, according to the fluff piece, they're looking at Reggie Yates over Greg James - WHY?

Probably because they are the media and have never actually listened to Radio 1.
