Edith Bowman's maternity leave

I think perhaps you're all looking a little too much into it. There's one person who would be in his element presenting a show about movies and would prevent there being little change to the schedule - and that's James King.

Radio 1 have shown they're perfectly happy giving shows to co-hosts to keep the balance while presenters are on maternity leave - they gave Grimmy the BBC Switch show.

James is already there half of the week, it won't make much difference to do an extra few days work.

Hope not. He doesn't really have any sort of personality of his own. I know Edith's show is mostly movies, but I'm pretty sure James King can talk of nothing else but films.

But it's a movie show

Then why does she play music? Surely there isnt enough interest in the movies to have an entire daytime show dedicated just to films? Although Edith does try I spose. But I find it difficult to sustain enough interest because although I like films, I wouldnt necessarily watch one because of a radio recommendation, and dont know who half the people she interviews are.

I liked the interview the other day where Edith made a big deal about Robert Downey jr having made a film every year except 1, and he sounded really uncomfortable and then I remembered, wasnt that the year he spent in rehab becasue of some major addition problems... well done Edith. It wasnt mentioned but he didnt sound happy.

James King filled in for Coxy one weekend a few weeks back. Too be honest I didn't hear it, it was on at work and I just heard a "James King, Radio 1" jingle. I agree with the above posts, I don't think he has the personalitly to carry the show five days a week. These would be my preference

1. Greg James

2. Colin Murray

3. Rob Da Bank

4. Dick and Dom.

I'd prefer Veron to any of those but it won't happen.

I'm not too keen on the idea of 3 hours of James 'MASSIVE chiselled jaw' King a week. As has already been said, he is somewhat lacking in personality. Edith's show isn't a movie show, it's a music show with a bias towards film.

How about if we divide the week up amongst the various DJs suggested? Maybe Vernon could spare a day or two?

Annie Mac or Colin would be very safe hands. James is good at the movie segment but definitely not a natural Radio 1 presenter, though I could imagine him on Radio 4. I'd love to think it could be Greg, but he isn't experienced enough yet. I think it would be a very stressful heavy burden to put on a young presenter in his first year, however talented.

I've been enjoying Annie Mac's tales of moving into her first flat, and I think it may well be her who has been asked to cover for Edith.

Radio 1 committed annie to covering Sara's shows until september wile she is on maternity. I think she would have been better covering for Edith as i dont really like her on Coxys show, but i doubt they will move things again. I think we could see a new presenter covering for Edith.

They can get Greg and the newsreaders to do it. They have a huge laugh in the mornings. Neil should stay on as the producer though, he adds to the comedy.

She looked enormous on BBC3 and looked really uncomfortable as she was struggling to find a ladylike position to sit in without the cameras looking up her skirt!

I loved the ironic image for a R1 music event .....Edith and Jo whiley sitting on the couches both obviously pregnant,

unlike the usual sexy babes image, we have a really mumsy one!

I noticed that too, and on the later bbc programme they had her and Zane interview Tom Smith. It seemed quite awkward Zane asked her so would you like to ask him a question and Edith said no I'm fine just listening thanks. :D Tom couldnt remember his next UK festival venues and Edith had them memorised. :)

curious to how r1 would react if she does the bbc 3 at glastonbury and not her show on r1

I think it highly unlikely that she'll be doing any presenting at Glastonbury this year. I simply don't feel anyone would relish seeing Edith's waters break on live telly!;)

I'll miss Edith when she's on maternity leave. Mini Edith is due on Glastonbury weekend, because Tom is playing with Editors and doesn't know what to do; stay with Edith or play Glastonbury, but Edith doesn't want him to miss playing.

In a way they are two seperate things one is a one off event, and the other is more of a committment.

But I thought it was interesting listening to newbeat today, tues, talking about how many 'normal' mums would love to spend more time at home with their kids and not leave them all day in a nursery.... then straight into Edith's show!

I think it will be really interesting to see how Edith gets on after this baby actually arrives... pretending to be supermum is all very well...but.... it sounds so easy to take a baby around everywhere with her, but can you imagine her interviewing someone like Mika covered in baby sick or with the baby crying in the background!
