Christmas 2023

Since this is the first Christmas for a good few years we’re presumably getting a lineup of non-new presenters, I’m wondering what people’s predictions/hopes are.

Pretty certain we’ll be hearing a lot of James Cusack.  Katie Thistleton will presumably be covering one of the weekday slots.  Jordan almost certainly on breakfast for a couple weeks (unless he’s unavailable, but Matt has kids so I don’t know who else then).

Another interesting question is will it still be anthems, or is that just to make it easier for the new presenters (I suspect the latter).

What are people thinking?

Yea I think Jordan on breakfast and James on drivetime

I think Jordan from now will do most of Christmas day’s breakfast for the rest of his career at the station and become a staple like Scott’s breakfast was. James maybe a good shout for drive and possibly with the scrapped Next Geneation takeover someone like James could end up doing one of the daytime shows like drive from Christmas Eve to the start of the Jan when the first full working week comes back Sam & Danni, may end up doing one of the crimbo limbo slots.

I’d wonder if they may end up having a special of RMC looking at the live-lounges of the year. I said this on previous years they really could have a good thing in giving a window shop to the evening programming with Future Sounds of 2023 with Victoria Jane, Jack Saunders, Maia Beth, Nels Hylton, Jess Iszatt, Benji B providing their favourite songs that happened through the year, sessions, interviews and feature highlights. But also having genre and mood party playlists across the days running up to new year that would be designed for listening back on new years to select party mood.

Oh yeah I remember seeing something about R1 not doing new presenters this year? Would be quite cool just to have normal presenters? As this is what they used to do before covid no?

It used to generally be the 'B team' plus Scott & Chris would shift over to breakfast.

God i am excited at the potential just need the confirmation of no newbies takeover

I know why things were as they were but I have found Christmas a time I tune away from Radio 1 as the anthems shows just become very tedious.  So with more experienced presenters on, hopefully the station can sound more normal.  But I wouldn't guarantee that.

Yep totally agree and used to love predicting christmas line ups years ago. Would love to hear more of the likes of Ore,James,Nat and Sam and Danni over the festive period

I think Jordan doing Christmas Day is a certain. Him doing Christmas limbo week seems a bit of a waste though as take him off elsewhere in the year. I’d imagine because of the dates Greg will have 2 weeks off (first week of Jan is my bet) so Matt/Jordan should get that week.

Christmas limbo week should be the likes of Arielle in daylight,  Sam & Danni, Ore and Nat

Agree it seems likely Jordan will do Xmas day breakfast. I think I saw that Arielle is doing some work abroad around NYE so I wonder if she will be busy to do that if you take in travel the day before/after.

I think it'll feature Sam & Danni and James Cusack as the daytime presenters for that week

Yes know Arrielle is getting more dance DJing work at the minute and is more in demand. My feeling they need to run essential mix and more stuff of the drum and bass show type of playlist go quite niche in the evening of NYE and in the daytime have playlists of pop/indie/soul-r&b/ rap with the likes of Mollie, Kenny, Jack and Victoria all pre-recorded

Said it before said it again Christmas week should be for upcoming presenters or ones that you don’t hear from much so only have 1 or 2 shows a week.

There’s no point having Jordan and to an extent Katie who you hear loads of and they need a break when listenership is down.

Arielle having daylight hours if she’s around - yes. The rest should be the likes of Nat, Ore, Sam & Danni, James Cusack/Emile (if the latter is not covering Absolute)

And you only really need 3 to 4 presenters to cover daytime. The commercial radio 6 - 10, 10 - 14, 14 - 18 or 7 - 10, 10 - 13, 13 - 16 and 16 - 19 would be perfectly adequate.

I wonder if James Cusack will be booked this year with Global, after appearing lots on both Heart and Capital this year, it wouldn't surprise me if he popped up on their stations across Christmas and new year.

I'm not so sure, as he only appears to be regional cover for Global and they tend to not bother with the regional shows for that bit between Christmas & New Year.

    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend.  Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5).  I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon.  It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
    • Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay tomorrow (Monday 29th April).
    • When Scott and Chris announced their departure from R1, I remember there was lots of speculation about who would take over the 1pm slot. Matt and Mollie were talked about a lot on here, and at the time I really didn't rate them as a replacement. A few years on, I see that I was totally wrong. They are such a good pairing, and it's the same kind of duo as Scott and Chris, in that they are real life friends, who spend time together in their real lives, which really does come across on air. True friends having a laugh together, and everyone is invited is how it feels to me now. I never thought about it before, but I agree with @coffeeandgin that Mollie is the Scott of the duo - pop obsessed and maybe a litte ditsy, but so funny, and in need of someone to anchor to or bounce off.  It seems that Matt is the kind of Chris of the duo then in that comparison, the one with the ideas, but also needs another person to make the magic happen. I know I'm outside of the R1 demographic, and maybe Dean and Vicky were meant to be younger and fresher, but I'm sure in my younger years I would have preferred to listen to two people who had a genuine connection and could really make each other laugh, as well as have the listeners laugh along. That was the Scott and Chris factor for me, and I think the only pair that come close to that now are Matt and Mollie.
