BBC Say Moyles Is Under Paid!

BBC bosses yesterday claimed radio stars like Chris Moyles are “under-paidâ€.

Director general Mark Thompson was grilled by MPs over presenters’ pay.

Radio 1 DJ Moyles pockets £630,000 a year, while Sir Terry Wogan on Radio 2 earns £800,000.

Jonathan Ross is said to earn £6million a year for his BBC radio and TV work.

But Mr Thompson insisted Beeb chiefs are paying LESS than the market rate.

He told the Commons Public Accounts Committee: “Our approach is absolutely to try to drive the best bargain we can.

“We would expect to get a discount because of the BBC and its status. That means they should be prepared to work for less for the BBC — and they do.â€

But committee chairman Edward Leigh said it was “disgraceful†that the BBC keeps pay secret. And he accused Mr Thompson of treating MPs “like complete idiotsâ€.

Mr Leigh said: “You claim you have to pay so much to presenters because of their market value — but you are setting the pace.â€

It comes after a report found presenters’ pay eats up three-quarters of radio show costs.

Yeah I like Ross but what does he do for the BBC? Friday night show and radio on the weekend?

Film 2009 too, but I'd agree. I love Wossy, but do find his salary a bit steep. I don't think the quantity he gets paid helped him a great deal during the Sachsgate affair. I'd say most of the people complaining were envious of his big fat pay check. Same principle can be applied to those who whinge about Moyles probably. Ho hum.

Vintage Ross, well more Steve Coogan really, but v funny nonetheless.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCIDHLLGf0w&feature=related

  • 3 weeks later...
The saga continues. The Beeb must save £400m over the next three years. The stars must take a 10% cut Mark Thompson is expected to say.

if the government want the BBC to save money they shouldn't have forced them to close studios in London & move up north & build new studies up there, that has cost the BBC over a billion pounds !

i love this comment in that report,

Cameron said the Tories would freeze the licence fee this year and might cut it in the future if they came to power. All public institutions had to "live within their means" in today's economic climate' date=' and the BBC ought to lead by example.[/quote']

no mr Cameron the government should lead by example & you can start by sacking half the public sector workers & taking away there gold plated pensions & make them have private pensions that are worth nothing because the tax man takes it all !

In the USA look what howard stern is on:

5 years = £350,000,000 (million)

Moyles is on less that 600,000 for a year.

In fairness, Stern's fee covers everything - studio costs, channel expenditure (for Howard 100 and 101), staff salaries, etc.

Still, Stern would see a good percentage of it in his personal pay cheque.

In my opinion moyles is being paid too little in relation to other presenters - Ross on 6 million is ridiculous but as said in the article the BBC are the monopoly in the market and so set the price. They all make a ridiculous amount of money and in the current times I reckon they all need a reasonable salary. They all do great work and 600,000 salary for Moyles is plenty seeing as he obviously gets more from other work.

So yeah. They get paid enough - but Ross definitely need a pay cut

Well I don't see how that is a valid point. I don't ask my boss for a bit more because I get taxed ;)

well would you be happy to give half your pay to the tax man ? because i wouldn't !

it is a valid point because Moyles actually takes home £180,000 not £300,000, unless the £300,000 quoted is after tax ? ( i would say that it isn't )

Well you can't raise some ones salary just because you like them and leave the others.

if i was in charge of the beeb i would !

90% cut for Wogan, Gambo & Paxman,

18% increase for Moyles, Wossy, Jezza, Fry & Edith (i would promote her to head of radio-1),

cut Eastenders budget by 20% & give the money to children's TV 19% & give the other 1% to Top Gear :D

:)

    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
