theres no doubt that obama will win.

however the main thing i am interested in is his stance on terrorism, and the terrorists in particular. i'm not sure what his position was in government in 2001 but i do worry about how tough he will be on them, let the wrong few slip through the net and another building could be missing. nothing that big since 9/11, hopefully he's strong enough to keep it that way.

on the grid.

Unfortunately, the election is by no means sewn up and there is always a chance McCain could win. Most Obama supporters that I've talked to are hoping the campaign won't start getting cocky. A 10 or so point margin in the polls is good, but certainly doesn't secure a win yet.

Regarding Hillary supporters going to McCain/Palin, I don't think there are that many. You'd have to be pretty naive to assume that because she's a woman also, that Palin has the experience (or even a tenth of the smarts) as Clinton does. Anyone who makes that leap of logic deserves what they get if that ticket gets elected.

In the possibility that the Republicans grab the White House again, does anyone in the UK have a sofa I could crash on for the next four years? :*

If I were Barack Obama, I would loathe to have Colin Powell endorsing my candidature for president.

In his position I don't think I'd be too happy deep down inside either. However, F*ck it! All's fair in love and war/politics [sic]. It'll bring in the votes.

PS. Incidentally Alan, if you you put a cross next to every candidate, you have effectively spoiled your vote. Bit of a waste of time really in my opinion.

With a bit of Luck Obama but the fact that the american voters re-elected George Bush after his first term shows anything can happen. If McCain becomes president then theres a good chance that Sarah Palin might need to take over at some point, tbh that scares me more than bush. Mentalist.

Scary thought! I read in the paper today that apparently she wanted to call one of her children Zamboni- after the machines that resurface ice-rinks?? What a mental.

I really hope all the Americans go out and vote for Obama, and don't just rely on opinion polls putting him in the lead. I got a severe lesson in voter apathy when the SNP got in the Scottish Parliament...

That's one of the things I'm afraid of! And polls may include people who will answer "Obama" because they think it will make them sound better, but in real life may be too racist or otherwise influenced to actually do it.

Oh dear. Well, it certainly hasn't altered my perception of him anyway.

Are any of you staying up to watch it on November 4th? I believe coverage starts at 11.15pm on BBC1.

My Oxford friend is having a drinking game that night. Don't think I'll be travelling to see him, but will probably follow the night's events closely.

I'm really excited for these elections, considering staying up late and into the morning just to find out the results.

Can anyone actually see McCain winning now? I know the polls are closing in but it would still have to be a huge shock. And the impact on relations with the rest of the world would probably take another big hit.

    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
