i think im going to move out, with the situation we could be facing now all i will be is a liability to mum and dad if things get really bad. i'll leave my saxo behind to mum because it's cheaper to run than her car. without me there here they won't have to pay for the electricity i use, food, water etc... besides i should of been gone when i was 18, i'm 20 and still at fucking home. pathetic.

it's worrying though, i don't even know where to start about getting a place, how i can afford it on my own and if i'll even find one.

on the grid.

Have you spoken to your parents about moving out DC?

Your best option for somewhere cheap to live would be to find a room to rent in a shared house, have a look online and in local papers and see if you could find somewhere. Only if you are able to afford it though. Otherwise maybe you could suggest to your parents that you contribute a bit to their costs, although it would take even longer for you to be able to afford to move out. 20 isn't old to be living with your parents though, these days lots of people in their mid 20s live with their parents still and older because it's so expensive to move out.

You wouldn't necessarily be a liability to your parents if you stayed, infact you might be able to help them out if you paid rent, and chipped in more towards the bills, if you don't already.

Living at home when you're 20 isn't pathetic. Many people leave it a lot later. I personally couldn't have tolerated living with my family after the age of 19 for longer than the few months of Uni hoildays. But in effect, seeing as I always had a place to stay during the holidays, I didn't move out until I got a job after Uni. I was 23.

If you want to move out I'm afraid it is virtually impossible to get your own place, unless you are a high earner or want to live in a skanky bedsit. You will need to find people to share a place with. I lived in shared flats for years, and whilst it can be hard (there are plenty of comments on UM on this subject) if you find the right people it can be great fun and you will gain a certain freedom. At least you will never be lonely!

If you are serious, start looking at the rental prices in your area, and try to work out how many people you'll need to live in the place to be able to pay the rent. Whilst I think it's really kind of you to offer your mother your car, it could be sold to pay a deposit on a flat and a bit of rent. Or maybe you could give her your car and sell hers?

Good luck with all this dc.

As I normally do, I have left my coursework to do on a sunday so I have A LOT of work to do this afternoon.

And my sister in laws family are planning a 'credit crunch christmas' which involves a secret santa with a £20 cap. This means my wish list is out the window.

I have to attend a meeting I don't want to tomorrow. At least, there's more than one of us for support in the discussions, etc. We're going to see how we can progress faster with our Dreamweaver stuff: some of the class are causing us to lag behind, and some have left altogther.

It is really annoying, all this illness going round. I'm still coughing a lot and quite sniffly. The headaches finally went away on Friday after 5 days dosed up on paracetamol and ibuprofen just to get through but the rest of the illness is sticking around.

It won't stop raining and I think my camera might be a bit broken, the lens cover isn't fully opening when I turn it on.

School, especially homework. I have now spent two hours doing my homework for tomorrow and revising for a maths test tomorrow - and there's still lots to go. It sucks, it really does, I swear I could almost cry right now...

The heating went off this morning and it won't turn on again. This means that not only is my room coooold, we don't have any hot water either. And I want to take a shower.

Ohh, and another thing that sucks is, again, school... But I guess that's just because we have lots of tests and homework at the moment :(

I can't think of a title for my contribution to the college paper, I opted to write for the politics section but I don't know what will actually interest 16-19 year olds. Any ideas?

Teenagers are interested in the drinking age, the voting age, knife crime... you could write something quite controversial or something amusing, either one will get people reading it.

I'm still trying to get people to agree to a day for an interview and really not having much luck. Oh well, I can go back to uni soon enough.

    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
