Radio 1 not serious about Dean and Vicky

If I was Dean and Vicky I’d be tempted to try to do an exclusive spoof interview satirical bit with any listeners they can find ahead of broadcast with name Liz Truss and chuck some questions out for fun and get someone like Joe Lycett on for bit of a post feature jibe. Give the launch bit of edge say what is coming up for the week maybe have a post livelounge feature with performing artist of the day

It's a long time since I heard this sort of topical humour on Radio 1 - which is a bit sad really.

Unless we’re getting a more music show that mirrors RMC, they could just be going for a soft launch approach. There hasn’t been much promo around the show, which makes sense considering they’re not high profile names that will immediately bring in listeners.

I’d imagine they don’t want people to immediately compare them to Scott and Chris so are giving time for people to get used to them

What an odd first show. Low levels of audience engagement. Even more music than chat. And no features. For the amount of people producing this show you'd expect more. Im biased towards Scott and Chris, but poor Dean and Vicky deserved more from their first programme.

Aled suggested they'd done quite a bit of audience research - perhaps the feedback was they wanted more music from an afternoon show?

Very possible.

Being on this site means you liked what Scott and Chris were doing but maybe some of the research was pointing in a different direction.

The station generally plays much more music than a few years ago.

I think this has been my unpopular opinion about R1 for the last year or so. The shows are slick and impressive, but they almost seem too cut and polished. Any sort of on-air chaos is reigned in, (and sometimes cut from the podcasts when it does happen). There is so much pressure on the presenters to play the next song. For me, some of the most fun about live radio is when things get wild, when the presenters are laughing so hard that they forget they are on air. I think it used to happen a lot when Will was with Scott and Chris, and I noticed there was a lot less 'messing' allowed when Amy joined.

That might be because I was a young listener when Moyles did Breakfast, and he just talked as much as he wanted to with seemingly no regard for how much music he was playing. But for me, the beauty of radio is getting to know the presenters, we have streaming services for just listening to music. I even noticed Scott's last show was heavily music-focused and no room to relax and be in the moment that it was.

If that's what the audience say they wanted then I can't argue with that, I'm outside of the demographic. I just find it a little bit sad that the world seems to want less and less personality and interaction.

I think being 21 turning 22 on Saturday the right medium is needed. Think if I heard Moyles breakfast show and any Gen Z or Gen alpha think there would be majority turn off. Think now management maybe properly reigning things in and even for what Radio 1 could do on social media and podcasting and l for its like the content isn’t really fun reflection or engaging to what is going on with the station and good reflection of what the station is doing on air and a good brand extension on air.

I think soon new management is needed. As think if Radio 1 is looking to the next era and generation in many aspects of its features and social media and multi media content and production it seems toned down then up. As there isn’t as much original video entertainment content or right use of social media to drag in new audience. Don’t think theres lack of the distinctiveness of having shows like Radio 1’s Stories and varying other features the station and initiatives it tried.

Think there needs more content ideas for the brand as the station looks fraction of it was. I think it needs fresh management and hire more people with fresh ideas of maybe people behind popular podcast outlets, digital multi media news and social accounts and people who produce creative content and stuff like podcasting events. For music maybe people who produced on stations like Reprezent.

Think with BBC Radio 1 doing more anthems stuff, shorter links and high amount of songs with little playlist turnover little change over and maybe what is new or added to the playlist should be at the top rather than what has been in the chart for over a month. Think the station needs to do less over played less throwbacks that are from chart topping artists who songs only few years ago had high playlist positions on chart positions. Think much like how Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s price matches Aldi maybe. Radio 1 does that too much with Apple, Amazon and Spotify. Than doing enough of giving you something that you’d like that isn’t in your playlist. Think even though its the case that songs stay awhile in the chart and people will listen to a lot of the same but much feels audiences tastes are getting niche and of different genres. Just needs to keep on mixing things up on its overall playlist so things don’t over tire out and trying to get ahead across all the time whether morning noon or night at different time slots the station looks ahead musically and gives you something different than what you already know.

Recently it’s only really been 6 Music making such significant growth out of BBC’s Music stations so think having regular mix and distinct music playlist pays off and what is with shorter links. I feel if you going to play so much music you got to do a lot of making it sounds exciting.

I mean it will be interesting to see what the extent of the research asked and what it told such vague statement doesnt scratch the report. I think the station has challenge of making sure that its under 20s of the country as populous would be interested in turning on the station at least once a week and deliver some sort of excitement that can give sometime between music streaming, podcasts, social media like TikTok and any alternative streamable content. Always wonder what the people beyond the site would think on such points

I only heard the first 20 minutes, but starting 3 songs in a row wasn't a good sign. I guess I haven't missed much.

I'll probably tune in tomorrow though.

Agreed they should have done a link and built up their first song. It sounds like they’re not pretending to be Scott and Chris or a must listen show yet.

Indeed, I think if you want to stop people choosing Spotify there's going to be quite a push towards more music. Plus if you want extra stuff, they seem to be providing that through podcasts like Vick and Jordan's. I suppose the risk is people don't necessarily have that appointment to listen feel, like the rating suggest for RMC, you also struggle.

I am not sure if people have looked at some of the general comments on Radio 1's social channels.

It is clear that Radio 1 has a bit of a problem with an ageing audience again.  A lot of people well outside Radio 1's demographics saying they don't like anybody now Scott has finished - apart from possibly Greg or Jordan.

There is also a common theme of posts "I'd long grown out of love with the music but tuned in for Scott and Chris".

So for the sake of station evolution maybe Dean and Vicky are meant to really not meant to be to everybody's taste.

The big issue is what is the future of youth music radio stations?

Had them on for an hour today on my drive home.  Just seemed wall to music with a quick link here and there.  This was just after they played the indie lyrics game.  Felt like at times they were in 2 different places doing 2 different shows.   The chat between the 2 didn’t seem ti flow.

just one persons opinion.

    • Yeah he's on more than usual including this Sunday and then 3 more shows in May according to the above. Makes me think it's James for the weekend shows also
    • For some reason there is 'Summer on Radio 1' listed on Sunday 2nd June, could this be replacing M&M until July?
    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
