A New Radio 1 Era

Tomorrow begins easily the biggest schedule change since Greg and Grimmy swapped, and considering the breadth of the change, even though breakfast stays the same, maybe an even bigger change.

Lots to talk about and lots to listen to tomorrow, who’ll be listening, and what are we most looking forward to hearing?

I thought it would be good to have a dedicated thread for us to give our thoughts on the new shows over the next few days/weeks and beyond!

What looking forward to is Jordan & Vick as that’s the really biggest change ans really is new show pairing and dynamic it’s also going to be interesting to see how RMC do mid mornings to be frank it’s likely to be odd convo point and one or to Entertainment bits. My like for music specific shows and sounds of soul stuff like that Victoria Jane’s new show seems interesting.

I know Jeremiah Asiamah is really looking forward to the new time for sound system time a lot of his new show.

Safe to say that Future Soul sounding good great selection of tracks and Victoria is a good presenter Hope Hottest Record of The Week has feel of Hype Specialist Chart feel Radio 1/1Xtra/6M sounding good with socialist shows at the moment

with Victoria Jane, Sian Eleri, Jamz Supernova, Blessed Madonna, Jeremiah Asiamah, DJ Complexion, Sarah Storey seems to be focus on start to bring new talent through and less of that old boys club and playing different genres and sounds

Was going to pretty much start the same thread tomorrow so you've saved me a job ha ha.

I'm looking forward to hearing drivetime in particular. I enjoyed Jordan very much as a standalone presenter, which is how he's established himself. However, Jordan works well with pretty much everyone he's shared the Radio 1 airways with so I have no doubt they will click instantly as a duo.

It does really feel like a new era, and it feels both like yesterday and a long time since Grimmy and Annie left, so I'm excited to hear how the new schedule sounds after a few weeks of temporary schedules and fill ins.

I’m excited for the new era, it feels massive and I think it’ll go very well.

I’m most looking forward to drivetime with Vick and Jordan, from what I’ve heard it sounds like it will be a really fun listener-centric show, they’ll have a quiz of some form, a requests feature, and an item called “Going Home Headlines” where listeners can text in about anything they have done earlier in the day and Vick and Jordan will make a mock news bulletin about the listeners.

RMC on mid-mornings is an interesting choice but I’m sure it’ll be a very good listen.

Clara hosting Future Sounds is a great fit for her, as she has a passion for new music, and the new “Hottest Records of The Week” on Monday nights sounds like a brilliant idea.

Interesting interview with Jordan North. It looks like they're really hoping Jordan and Vick can shake off a London-centric image due to their backgrounds. Particularly those who don't own radios anymore.

I’m a little disappointed that Newsbeat hasn’t had an update with the new era today. Still a great package but has been on since 2017!

In my opinion the News beat intro has only realtor really been shortened over years ‘ listen watch share this is BBC Radio 1s’ was the old for some years ago. Find news intros never need that much touching I mean it’s rare news shows or any station changes the intros of news programming or bulletins.

I do hope that Katie gets something in the future was she’s such a good presenter they work well together. I find Jordan and Vick really rare to have ability to pretty much able to present with anyone Jordan did well before with Maya Jama, Chris Stark and Mollie king for short bits

As expected... Every show has sounded fresh and on form today.

No doubt Jack Saunders will deliver a good show, as he often does and it's good he gets an earlier timeslot.

Will be intriguing to listen to how Dean gets on at the weekend. What's great is the line up is also strong on Saturday & Sundays. There's not many weak links with the regular cover voices popping up (James Cusack and Sam & Danni) have both been decent listens too.

In terms of cover now, I'm assuming RMC and Vick & Jordan will rarely be all off at once. If they are on occasion, I'll say the likes of Adele Roberts and Arielle Free will still be there to be called upon.

Greg- Matt & Mollie as per before

Clara- Hopefully Jack although Sian Eleri will pop up on occasion

Future Artists- mix of Sian Eleri and Jess Iszatt (the latter popping up on the Power Down Playlist show on occasion)

Indie Show- Nels Hylton

If Dean is off, is there obligation of the show still coming from Salford? If so, might be another opportunity for James Cusack to get cover slots on the station, as he's already based in the North as a cover DJ for Heart Yorkshire drivetime.

Any ideas who will become Scott's cover? In recent times it's been Vick & Katie, and RMC, and before that... Jordan (with Chris). As they usually favour a duo to cover, there's only really Matt & Mollie... and they already have a fair few weeks a year on breakfast duties in addition to their own show.

Have RMC actually covered for Scott? I only remember them stepping in for Clara?

It would make sense for it to be Matt & Mollie, seeing as they’re unlikely to land a full time daytime slot.. lots of cover is a bit of a sweetener! Could even then see Arielle or someone from Friday Early Breakfast covering their Saturday & Sunday slot.

They did do a full week, yeah. I cannot remember exactly when but I certainly remember them doing it.

Edit: It was Monday 9th through to Thursday 12th September 2019.

I would imagine RMC will have a 3 year run at least if it goes well. Vick and Jordan will be on drive until Greg leaves breakfast. Scott is secure until January 2023 at least I would imagine, given by the fact he recently signed a contract, so he could go in a year or two, maybe longer than that.

I would guess the next major schedule changes will be September time 2023, at the earliest. Tinkering with weekends (Adele going, shifting around, any other departures etc) could totally happen sooner, but other than that I think it’s all pretty solid.

Listened to all the show's yesterday and just a few thoughts...

Greg - It's such a great show, always has been & it has just felt right with helping settle in this new schedule. This morning he had Charlie, Sian & Vick all on for different reasons (live lounge promotion, 'top of the shops' game & a listeners review of drive time - respectively) promoting their shows and just giving Radio 1 that friendly family feel. My only criticism of Greg's show is that I wish they'd do something with the 10 till  10:30 half hour. It's basically just a re-hash of the "latest things" round up from just before 8am. Which is fine because I doubt many people will listen to the whole show like I do, but maybe a different game or daily feature would help finish the show off nicely. I do miss the craziness of when he show was on 6:30 till 7.

RMC - I think they'll settle into this show really well. It is obviously different to what has come before when presenting the live lounge, but I like the idea of a bit more chat during the morning. I wish they'd carry over the 'night night nonsense' games from their evening show, as this added some nice variety (whereby they each come up with a game for the other 2 to play)... but it's early days so let's see what is to come.

Scott - You can easily see why he is still on Radio 1. Yesterday's show was very entertaining, a good Whooooo game & some brilliant responses to the new WhatsApp number being added. He just understands the target audience, hence the longevity.

Vick & Jordan - I was a little bit nervous upon hearing the announcement of this show, mainly because I felt Jordan was strong enough to take on a daytime show himself. But yesterday was a great debut. I really don't think this will turn out to be a Simon & Jo on Radio 2 situation. They connected really well, didn't really talk over one another (which is always a risk with new duos) and it all seemed really natural. Sounds like they've got some good features planned too, plus Jordan North asking what everyone is having for their tea is the MOST Jordan North drive time feature.. Vick being very sensible & organised vs Jordan's calamity lifestyle I think will really help the dynamic here...

I dipped in a little bit to Clara, Jack & Sian too - which I think is a strong 'everyone in the right place' evening line up. I'm a little bit sad at the loss of the evening entertainment show, but I wonder if the increased cost of the daytime line (2 presenters left shows there to be replaced by 5!!) so it is understandable.

RMC work much better than Clara did in that slot too, and Clara is the most sensible replacement for Annie (who I'll also continue to miss!), and its nice to have Sian Eleri getting more hours so quickly, really like her. Good changes all round on weekdays imo!

    • Random idea time: condense all the throwback shows into one three hour show from 10am to 1pm on a Saturday, get Katie Thistleton back to host it (as Charlie does with Dance Anthems on a Saturday), call it “Radio 1’s Bottomless Brunch with Katie Thistleton” and just have 3 hours of throwbacks from across the decades, not just 00s or 10s, just a mix of everything. The occasional 90s anthem, tunes from the early 2020s, just 3 hours of pure feel good
    • I think it's great the amount of choice out there right now. I could happily listen to Greg or Jordan in the morning, Going Home or Huw Stephens in the evening, or Scott and Matt and Mollie in afternoons.  Still a few times when I'm channel hopping but maybe that's healthy to check out what's around.  As that research pointed out, Scott is good for minimal distractions. If you want some chaos I dare say it'll be Matt and Mollie offering that.  Plenty of my friends say it's the Radio 1 playlist that puts them off, even if they like the DJs. So Radio 2 is more preferable.
    • I quite quickly gave up on Scott’s show on R2 as I realised it wasn’t my kind of vibe. I do listen to the Scott Mills weekly to catch up, because I still think Scott is great, but there is just something missing (for example, he played out some clips recently of the old sleep recording app from the R1 days, and didn’t play ‘go and open the window Garry’ - or if he did, it didn’t make it to the podcast.) I don’t see them changing it now or making it any ‘younger’ than it is.   Matt & Mollie in the afternoon is something that I’m really looking forward to. They are such an interesting and funny listen. It has given me a different dilemma though, as 1pm has been the perfect time for me to catch up on the Capital breakfast show and takes me perfectly to the end of my working day, so now I’ll probably have to forego listening to that and stick with R1 for Matt & Mollie. These shows need podcasts because it’s already giving me fomo.
    • Even for the older Radio 1 listeners (of which there are still quite a few) Scott’s show doesn’t feel quite right.  (That’s nothing on Scott who sounds good but more the station sound and content). Since moving to Capital Breakfast I haven’t been listening to much Radio 1.  I always found the shows outside of Breakfast and Drive more wallpaper due to my working day and the show content of RMC and Dean and Vicky so Capital is just background noise to me after enjoying Breakfast.
    • I love Scott but if you're a 20 or 30 something that enjoyed his last few years of Radio 1 the Radio 2 show just doesn't translate. Stars from Neighbours or 90s singers just aren't my cup of tea and I can't get enthused about some has been at Radio 2 in the Park or some country music countdown.  Until that changes I will probably more likely listen to Matt and Mollie.  The Steve Wright fans think Radio 2 has turned into Radio 1 but it has a long way to go to win over the older R1 audience.
    • Radio 2 brought in Scott to bring the afternoon audience age down, but I feel with Matt and Mollie replacing Dean and Vicky they're going to be competing for a similar audience. Will Scott's show evolve to bring in more listeners or do you think they will be comfortable with the audience they currently have?
    • Yes I'm the same with 6Music. Huw Stephens offers something different.
    • They are an answer. I do listen to 6 Music quite a bit but kind of feel like it isn’t for me unlike the New Music Fix Daily, Huw Stephens who I’d happily listen to. Think it’s a generational thing and music preference. But it’s like how 1 Xtra cut down Snoochie Shy’s nightly show to just Monday and with Wednesday and Thursday with just playlist programme. I just miss the days of having more choice of that time of night.
    • Practically speaking, Riley & Coe on 6Music is the answer to that problem - but I get your overall point.
    • Yes and thats the huge selling point after 6pm as always has been in the evening. As when I started listening to radio 1 about eleven twelve years ago its the station that got me into music new and familiar artists and bands. I think the issue with a lot of the new music shows being crammed in length of the shows and not all is live there’s less chance for a presenter to tell you about the band or artist or have the impression of chatting to the listener by reading out texts and emails or including voice notes. I’m really enjoying Jack Saunders’ new music show as thats how you do a show like that on Radio 1 good mix of genres but from 10pm onwards you don’t have the presenter chatting to the listener or that live feel as sometimes you need at that time.
    • Given one of yesterday’s ‘bangers’ was Noah Kahan’s Stick Season, I doubt it.
    • No chart show on the 24th May because of Big Weekend.
    • How has it been working early mornings as a parent, Chris? Is it harder to juggle than the 1-4 slot?
    • I still think Dua Lipa could make the line-up. She's in the Live Lounge soon. Would be a scoop if they had two of the key Glastonbury performers.
    • Is the three bangers after nine idea meant to compete with Ten Minute Takeover?
