Strange that the day of the challenge has Matt and Mollie sitting for Greg. I wonder if she's supposed to be mobile co-hosting at the same time?

Oh that will be fun if they try to do Matt vs. Mollie while she's on the road.

It's been an excellent mechanism for promoting Matt and Mollie. And Mollie's really put a shift in. I love the physical challenges as they resonate with the audience but I do hope they can find something like the lolathon for creativity next year.

Had the lurgy this week so have been following it all on the radio. Hopefully I'll be well enough for Friday to see her finish in Hull.

It's been a great week of radio. Radio 1 at its best - promoting a great cause and all the DJs on air together and shows how much they all get along. This week has highlighted too just how great the likes of Greg, Matt and Katie are as broadcasters - they have been superb covering the challenge and in their genuine love and support for Mollie (who has been doing so well and is giving it her all).

Lovely too to see Matt & Mollie get their flowers so much in the past month - both thoroughly deserve it and their kindness and good spirit has really shone through these last few days even more than usual. Matt's link yesterday about how Mollie has been a support to him and him to her at around 4.45pm yesterday was just so wonderful and heartfelt and what Radio is all about.

Am I too cynical thinking some of the drama is more theatre than anything?

I always think there not doing the whole thing. Eg. They start and do maybe 5 miles, stop and a someone else takes over in disguise and basically do shifts. The photos and videos are when Mollie is on board.

Some of the timings don't add up like usually finishing at time supposed to finish at

I didn't say she wasn't doing it. I saw Mollie cycle in Burton.

I can see why people would be suspicious of it cos she's knackered and it's hard for professionals to get the times and distances and she has only had 4 weeks training.

My point wasn't that the challenge was fake - though obviously some of the timings are managed to fit a finish during Going Home even though it went wrong yesterday.

What I meant was some of the drama is clearly theatre.  I mean Matt and others have been genuine and touching about personal stories and I am not suggesting fake but there is certainly added theatre along the way to create better radio and fuel donations.

Oh yeah you've got to make good radio from it, I appreciate that point.

They've poorly timed it today she won't be in Leeds until 9pm at this rate. If it was that orchestrated and getting lifts they'd have sorted that better 😂

The only thing I’d call time management is when to begin the day’s peddling.

Did she make it to Leeds

Not yet - she was on the One Show in the last hour when there were still 10 miles to go.

Still going I think - they had her on the One Show and mentioned she still had an hour to the finish line.

So she'll probably be finishing today during her usual Future Pop show.

Do wonder how tomorrow will work with the Chart as it would be quite the effort by Mollie to finish before it. Normally they'd aim to have these challenges done before the Chart

    • OJ just mentioned he's off over Christmas for the first time in a while but back on NYD morning so I think he's doing the breakfast show that day. It's still got Scott listed (Mark Goodier is listed for the rest, and he's on NYD lunchtime with a Pick Of The Pops special)
    • Calum Leslie is this months Life Hacks co-presenter.
    • Rylan mentioned yesterday that next week is his last show of the year before he does panto.  Breakfast starts at 7am on NYD, due to the first few editions of Tony Blackburn's Sounds Of Soul series going out between 4 and 7am. There's also a Sounds Of Soul between 12 and 2pm on Friday 2nd January. NYD afternoon is Pick Of The Pops between 12 and 3pm, 'Your Ultimate Stevie Wonder Song' with Trevor Nelson between 3 and 5pm, then 'The Wonder Of Stevie' with DJ Spoony between 5 and 6pm.
    • I switched to 2 fully when Scott started Breakfast but had dabbled with Sara and Vernon for while as the music on 1 was becoming terrible and 2 offers a wider range I've found recently the playlists between the 2 are getting closer and there's a lot of stuff on 2 now that should only be on 1.         I do wonder where the cutoff from artists is as Robbie Williams would almost be exclusive to 2 now but had a live lounge recently  Certain artists like Lewis Capaldi, Adele, Coldplay work for both stations but other musicians don't mix too well
    • Sounds of the 90s would be on much earlier in the night if they were really serious about younger audiences, and they'd have a 00s show!
    • (Weirdly double posted from earlier when I refreshed my phone)
    • All very true and it is more nuanced than hard numbers. Back when Radio 1 "banned" pre 90s music in the mid-90s it was for very good reason.  The sound had changed so much the 80s tunes jarred.  Music has changed slower in the past 30 ish years than probably any point in popular culture.  (Though if you watch the old editions of Top of The Pops from 1998, you can see how many tunes that even made Number 1 would never get played on radio now). Radio stations have a huge challenge in evolving to match target demographics. The truth is Radio 2 is probably walking a tightrope and given how respectable their figures are in view of the competitive landscape must be getting it largely right.  (Even if it's generally not for me).
    • Annoys me when I hear people say that, I've heard it before. It's not Radio 1's area anymore to sound like 20 years before, it's Radio 2's now. Their argument is invalid as 20 years ago in 2005 Steve Wright was on afternoons on Radio 2, and 20 years before that he was on Radio 1 in 1985.
    • Radio 1 Anthems station will be completely Christmas Anthems from the 11th December at 12pm. They are starting slightly later this year as going back to last year's schedule, it was totally Christmas Anthems from 11am on the 3rd December. From the 26th December, it's Radio 1 Anthems by year starting at midnight with 2006 anthems. Given these slots are supposed to be for the new presenters, I think a key change will be these shows will be voice-tracked or pre-recorded rather than live.
    • As for listening figures, it's no surprise with there being a million and one stations for every decade and every mood, that people are tuning in elsewhere. Of course some followed Ken, but I imagine a good chunk of Vernon's 6.6 million listeners aren't new, and plenty stuck with R2 when Ken left. Considering the vast amount of choice, that is still a very respectable figure.
    • I think everyone has hit the nail on the head. I get Ken was probably asked the question in the hope they'd get a negative BBC headline.. but he chose to move on. Radio 2 has changed a lot in the past few years, but I think the changes made were the right ones. Radio 2 has to evolve. If some people had it their way, there would still be a lot of Big Band and easy listening type shows, and 60's/70's on daytime shows (it's not as if they don't still play anything from these decades in the day) When I read people saying it's like Radio 1 from 20 years ago.. the only comparison is some of the presenters. The actual content and to be fair most of the music is nothing alike. Yeah, they play some tracks now that R1 played at the time but R2 didn't, but a lot of those songs are 20 or more years old, so it's no surprise Radio 2 are playing them now.
    • I'm actually really liking the schedule after Christmas. Feels really fresh but also good to see a mix of new pairings, a few new cover presenters and familiar faces.
    • This makes complete sense and I’m glad they’re doing it.
    • I didn't think of Radio 1 Anthems to be fair. I think you might be right on that. Makes sense having the back to back Anthems on that station.
