Strange that the day of the challenge has Matt and Mollie sitting for Greg. I wonder if she's supposed to be mobile co-hosting at the same time?

Oh that will be fun if they try to do Matt vs. Mollie while she's on the road.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been an excellent mechanism for promoting Matt and Mollie. And Mollie's really put a shift in. I love the physical challenges as they resonate with the audience but I do hope they can find something like the lolathon for creativity next year.

It's been a great week of radio. Radio 1 at its best - promoting a great cause and all the DJs on air together and shows how much they all get along. This week has highlighted too just how great the likes of Greg, Matt and Katie are as broadcasters - they have been superb covering the challenge and in their genuine love and support for Mollie (who has been doing so well and is giving it her all).

Lovely too to see Matt & Mollie get their flowers so much in the past month - both thoroughly deserve it and their kindness and good spirit has really shone through these last few days even more than usual. Matt's link yesterday about how Mollie has been a support to him and him to her at around 4.45pm yesterday was just so wonderful and heartfelt and what Radio is all about.

Am I too cynical thinking some of the drama is more theatre than anything?

I always think there not doing the whole thing. Eg. They start and do maybe 5 miles, stop and a someone else takes over in disguise and basically do shifts. The photos and videos are when Mollie is on board.

Some of the timings don't add up like usually finishing at time supposed to finish at

I didn't say she wasn't doing it. I saw Mollie cycle in Burton.

I can see why people would be suspicious of it cos she's knackered and it's hard for professionals to get the times and distances and she has only had 4 weeks training.

My point wasn't that the challenge was fake - though obviously some of the timings are managed to fit a finish during Going Home even though it went wrong yesterday.

What I meant was some of the drama is clearly theatre.  I mean Matt and others have been genuine and touching about personal stories and I am not suggesting fake but there is certainly added theatre along the way to create better radio and fuel donations.

Oh yeah you've got to make good radio from it, I appreciate that point.

They've poorly timed it today she won't be in Leeds until 9pm at this rate. If it was that orchestrated and getting lifts they'd have sorted that better 😂

The only thing I’d call time management is when to begin the day’s peddling.

Still going I think - they had her on the One Show and mentioned she still had an hour to the finish line.

So she'll probably be finishing today during her usual Future Pop show.

Do wonder how tomorrow will work with the Chart as it would be quite the effort by Mollie to finish before it. Normally they'd aim to have these challenges done before the Chart

    • It won't be the first week of new shows. Pretty sure I read that Trevor Nelson has specifically said now about starting 'late Jan' which ties in with several comments about w/c 27 Jan being the launch week. After panto, Scott will need a break and prep time, in order to then have a decent run of the new show before any breaks.
    • I reckon the schedules wont be updated until after Christmas as I expect there’s an embargo until Scott’s free to the PR launch, advertising campaign and do the media rounds
    • Maybe they havent adjusted the schedule pages yet but that could be the first week of the new shows, Breakfast and Afternoons are not labelled
    • We already have a schedule changes page 🙄
    • Weds 8th Jan 2025 CassKidd sits in for Benji B 11pm - 1am Weds 15th Jan 2025 Mo Ayoub sits in for Benji B 11pm - 1am
    • Charlie Tee was also covering this show yesterday and will be tomorrow and Friday. On the main Radio 1 station, Early Breakfast has a placeholder photo on the 21st-22nd January. Still says Dean though.
    • Sian in for Jack 13th-16th January.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Monday 13th & Tuesday 14th January.
    • Kudos to Aled for replying to your questions - not sure there’s many people in his position who’d do that! Pretty fair and valid I’d say…the RAJAR point is a good one, the anthems situation just allows them to keep the music flowing.
    • Hi Tom.   Thank you for your email – I really appreciate the passion you bring to being a fan of Radio 1.  We never take it for granted.   We do SO much throughout the year, we’re in a situation where the Radio 1 presenters and production staff almost face a project or priority every week.  If I therefore have an opportunity to give the team some downtime I’m going to take it.  Radio is such a habitual medium that numbers drop quite quickly when routines are disrupted – so much so RAJAR stops counting listeners by these dates.  I’d therefore prefer, if we were going to give people a break that we chose the period of lower listenership to do it and by changing the formats of the show it encourages presenters and production teams to suspend normal features and take a fresh approach to the new listeners they might be catching us while they travel home for Christmas.   Your second question is closely related.  Tomorrow we’re announcing the 27 new presenters who will take over Radio 1 between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.  No other radio station does this and it requires a lot of production resource to train up brand new presenters – some of whom have only known broadcasting on student radio – and get them ready for national broadcasting.  The Anthems format provides those presenters space to learn, make mistakes and cope with the pressures of live broadcasting to a large audience while giving them space to reminisce about the music. The audience feedback to us playing a nostalgic playlist for this week is incredibly positive (so much so it’s spawned its own stream on Sounds).  This format is perfect for people drifting between radio stations while in the car as they travel around the UK visiting family. Whereas the critical mass of Radio 1’s habitual audience are having their routines disrupted and likely won’t return in full numbers until the 6th of January.   Specialist shows remain during the week as they are pre-recorded so we can manage those pressures in other ways whereas keeping daytime Radio 1 live and reactive is important to us and the audience consuming the station.   I hope this helps.   We appreciate the passion to Radio 1 – and hope you enjoy the station in 2025, we have some epic things planned that we can’t wait for you to hear.   Nadolig Llawen.   Aled
    • 16th December (Radio 1 Dance) Charlie Tee in for Arielle Free on Radio 1 Dance Morning. No new shows of this W/C 20th December until the 6th January.
    • Aww brilliant, Beth Wallace is a local radio DJ in Aberdeen and once did an interview with Greg on one of the stations she used to present on. She’s really good
    • James Cusack in for Jack doing the Official Charts on the 17th January.
    • Phoebe I-H also covering for Jaguar on the 16th January.
    • Jess is in for Sian on Sunday 22nd December & Sunday 5th January.
