Greg's new afternoon show

So what do you think of Greg's new show?

It seems to be going good so far bringing some of the old features such as The best bit of the radio from yesterday, i wonder if the mp3 game will be back on later! Not sure about the voice over guy before the 2.30 news, it might grow on me though.

But the new feature 'Feet Up Friday' looks quite good.

First impression is that Greg is a good replacement for Edith and provides more in that slot than Edith and movies did. However, I think it will need work. The features aren't the most imaginative - I guess lunch time is a different show and won't be as wacky as early breakfast - but I liked the old spontaneous Greg. It's difficult because I love Greg in the mornings but I never overly enjoyed Greg's covering for Mills so hopefully he'll find the right balance.

It's obvious they're going to need time to find their feet as with Fearne but I'm confident he will make that slot his own in time.

Gregs first show,

well i don't see what all the fuss was/is about regarding Greg,

still sounds like he is talking 'at' the listener rather than 'to' the listener,

the 'Greg's fave game' his fave song, book, photo or bit from a tv/radio show is just lame & by choosing a song from Shooting Stars that is no where near as good as it used to be made it sound even worse & once it was played he just went into anther track, not sure how a book or photo will work on the radio, hmmm,

the re-interviewing of the artiest from Fearne's 'Live Lounge' when they have already been interviewed by Fearne is just pointless, i don't get why anyone thought that would be a good idea,

that innuendo bingo has been by Greg for ages & also done by Scott, it is funny but the novelty soon wears off & that maybe why Scott doesn't bother with it anymore,

i just found the show bland & un-interesting, basically its exactly the same as Edith's show but with no movies chat or interesting movie guests, that just leaves someone pushing a button to play a track, that is just what you can get from the commercial radio stations,

on a positive note the afternoon did seem to go by rather quickly as the show just, merged into Fearne's & the whole show just blurred into just track after track & nothing to entertain the listener.

Ricky will be good on the show (big guest in the first week or so, seems strange, clutching at straws perhaps?) just depends on if he (Greg) has improved his interview style as he mentioned on the show today.

i dunno, 2 maybe 3 out of 5 (5 is Edith)

:)

In my opinion, if there's less movies chat, there's more chance I'll be a regular listener.

Alan, you didn't enjoy it? Fair enough, everything you've said before now has led me to think you would have a fair balanced opinion that wouldn't have been decided upon before listening to the show. I knew you'd give it a fair chance.

well i have always said i would listen before i say anything,

ok i may have said a lot of stuff above, but that is what i feel, i don't want to turn off R1 far from it, i don't really have much choice only turn the radio off altogether :(

i won't say i didn't like the show but the show was just empty i thought, it was just Greg playing music & a R1 show has got to be more than that, (i expect much more from a R1 show than that) the show needs something to make it different, ok so Jono & others didn't like the movie part of Edith's show, but at least it was different, they have had more than enough time to think up some idea's for the new show.

i didn't think the constant references to his old show or Fearne's helped much either.

:)

I agree the Live Lounge bit added nothing to the show but at the end of the day they're going to have to promote Fearne's show anyway so he might as well do something a bit different to Moyles and Mills' repeat of the track. It's a bit unfortunate though that Greg's interview seemed more interesting than Fearne's interview - "what's your favourite cartoon character" and "what is your ringtone?".

Bit confused about the lack of Dolly Parton in the system for ten minute takeover. We had Mika, Kid Cudi and Mumford and Sons? A bit fishy that.

I just love that you mentioned innuendo bingo and then Scott plays it! :heh:

Plus that sentance is just classic.

Oh Dearey me. Why not more personality Greg? Thats what makes your show. No memorable features at all. Listenable but not a calender event. Needs a big feature like Flirt Divert, Whats occurin?, Carpark Catchphrase etc.

Early breakfast didn't start off like that though.

Did she not ask them the stupid weather question her & Reggie asked people on the chart show?

Much as I love Greg, I really felt his show lacked a bit of oooomph today.

Constructive suggestions that spring to mind are firstly having a bit more of a team (noticed they made a half hearted effort at this with Frema (?) nice newsreader lady), and more features/guests.

Shall continue to listen though.:)

    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
