VV Brown blasts Radio 1 playlist

VV Brown has criticised Radio 1 for refusing to playlist her music.

The singer, whose recent release 'Shark In The Water' was only given specialist plays, blamed the station for limiting access to new artists.

"Radio 1 are followers and they act like they lead, but they don't," she told KOKO Podcast.

"They didn't play Ladyhawke for ages and she had to re-release all of her stuff again. Florence [And The Machine] had loads of singles out before this one and they didn't even playlist La Roux at first - she got to number four without them and then they playlisted her."

She added: "It's who the radio stations decide to playlist first. Just because they playlisted Lady Gaga before Little Boots, does that mean that she came first? No, it's very political, so I just tend to concentrate on my music and what I'm doing, and hopefully people will connect to the honesty that I bring.

"It's going to take a while for me, I might not be playlisted straight away, but my album was number eleven on the iTunes chart without getting Radio 1 playlisted. It will come in time, but I have to keep going."

VV Brown releases new single 'Game Over' on September 21.

It's true, I've noticed it with a few tracks that i've played on my own show, Master Shortie for example, i played at the end of last year, then in the middle of this year it got playlisted and i started playing it again, the same happened with Gnarls Barkley - Crazy, i played it A YEAR before radio 1 played it, the specialist shows need more of an input with the mainstream playlist.

I agree to an extent with what she says. Radio1 are very good at promoting and spotting "up front" British rock/indie and dance acts and giving them daytime exposure. They do however seem to be very week at promoting and taking a risk with any "pop" music though, maybe this stems from them having no specialist show for pop? Maybe Switch or another weekend slot could be used for that purpose?

A case of a song getting daytime plays waaay too late is Danny Bird's Red Mist, I first heard it on Annie Mac's mash-up a year ago and loved it, but by the time it was picked up by daytime I was bored of it lol. Although I do understand that that has something to do with how D&B records are released.

Utter bullshit.

A HUGE amount of commercial radio stations rely on Radio 1's playlist each week to decide what they play themselves! Fact.

Has she ever thought that her song wasn't actually that good?

Radio 1, like every single radio station, plays the music it thinks its audience will like. If the audience want to hear Lady Fecking Ga Ga, then it will get played over VV Brown.

Shakira - Hips don't lie was Number 1 for 2 weeks, on the official uk singles charts, before radio 1 playlisted it.

VV Brown's previous single, Shark in the water, charted at 34, so obviously people liked it.

It may well have got there, but only stayed in the chart for 1 week, therefore the demand for it isn't that good.

You can get to 34 by hardly selling any singles.

not very many people just to get to number 34.

Radio 1 have hardly played the new Guetta tune, and that's at number 1 in iTunes. It's hardly played anywhere, so if people like it - they'll buy it.

Radio 1 obviously didn't play VV Brown because it's crap. And she's gone the right way to make sure nobody ever plays any of her singles again.

The new David Guetta song Sexy Bitch (Chick) was Scotts record of the week a wk or so back and is currently on the B list so it gets a decent amount of play but Pete tong has been playing it as well each week

but they haven't been hammering it into people. The fact it's number one suggests that people are downloading it because they like it and not because radio 1 are telling them to by playing it all the time

no not at all, she hasn't had her music put on the play list so she goes & rants about it  oh what a surprise, there are plenty of other stations that don't play her stuff & yet she doesn't go around moaning about them does she, its just about getting her in the papers etc & promoting herself.

:)

She has a point though- it's not as if she'd sound out of place on Radio 1, she's just a victim of the 'flip a coin' policy to see if a song goes on the playlist or not. If it had been played it would most probably have been more successful. I'm not a fan of all her songs (and not this particular track), but I kinda respect what she does and agree with her sentiments.

    • The Summer on Radio 1 thing makes me wonder whether they might be doing something similar to last year again where they have a temporary schedule over the summer before introducing changes in September - maybe the new host won’t start until after the summer?
    • There was talk on my Big Weekend group from the council about them waiting for Ticketmaster to send an email out. They said they've been waiting a week. Maybe they're waiting for train strike confirmation first.
    • It’s on Saturday and Friday that week too. I guess this would make sense, as it gives them roughly 6 weeks off weekends until they start the new show?
    • Yeah he's on more than usual including this Sunday and then 3 more shows in May according to the above. Makes me think it's James for the weekend shows also
    • For some reason there is 'Summer on Radio 1' listed on Sunday 2nd June, could this be replacing M&M until July?
    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
