New Schedule - Greg and Fearne on daytime

I'm intrigued by Matt Deegan's quote on The Guardian site -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jul/20/radio-1-djs-age

Apparently Greg might be one of the younger faces of Radio 1 but he also currently brings in one of the oldest audience being on early breakfast with an average audience of about 35 year olds. That's of course expected that early in the morning but it'll be interesting to see whether that will differ during the lunchtime shift when kids are at school.

By the way Nihal has said a couple of times he is about to start a new project at R1 but can't say what it is yet. See twitter.

I can't see how he can fit in to daytime though? Must be a specialist show.

We have discussed this but fair enough you probably couldn't be arsed with 24 pages. He doesn't say Radio 1. It could be anywhere or anything.

I can't see Moyles moving from Breakfast just yet, maybe in a few years.

He may be controversial but he has pulled in millions of listeners, and does a lot for the station. The people who complain about what he says and does aren't the kind of people who would listen to Radio One anyway, so taking him off air or changing his slot just lets them win.

Agree with what most people are saying about Fearne, I'm sure she's a nice girl but when she covered (Edith?) a few months ago she just couldn't hack it imo. Never listened to Edith's show much as it's too movie orientated and wasn't listening to radio 1 in the days of Colin and Edith so don't know what she'll be like as a weekend dj. I think Parfitt and co are worried about being slated by the tabs for having older dj's and being out of touch (which clearly isn't the case)

Have Jo or Edith made any direct responses to this on air?

Also agree with ^ Vernon Kay's Sports Saturday would be GREAT (maybe just 3-5 though).

Noooooooooo Zane is much better plus Jo wouldn't get half the people Zane gets on his show. plus i think that might be just a tad too much Chris and Greg!

Although I massively agree with no more switch!

(Yes I know that it's only a dream schedule before anyone says it :bah:)

Why are they replacing Jo Whiley? Replacing Jo Whiley is like replacing John Peel. They never did it because John was born to do the job. He remained loyal at Radio 1 just like Jo Whiley has. Age shouldn't come into it. It's radio, do they not realise we can't see who is behind the microphone?

They can swap Jo and Edith with younger presenters it will have little effect. That demographic are the iPod generation who are not retro enough to carry pocket radios around.

Why do they believe a DJ of a younger age can connect with an audience any more than someone like Jo or Edith? I would in fact she say it is quite the opposite - Fearne Cotton has far less in common with me than Jo Whiley.

I guess essentially they realise Fearne Cotton will have the older generation reaching for their off switch when her squawking and cackling takes over leaving a generation who tragically grew up watching her on Children's TV.

And then you'll have a very small young audience still tuned in while the over twenties will be struggling to find an equivalent replacement.

One thing I cannot understand about the reshuffle is regarding Jo. The Radio 1 target audience is 15-29. The hours when the young Ferne Cotton is on, the audience whose age ranges between 15 and roughly 22/23 would more than likely not be listening as they are in school and college. Jo works well with her audience, and has a well established show with well known features. Listening to her makes a good alternative from the drivel thats on telly at that time.

But Ferne is young, trying to appeal to the younger audience, yet the younger "switch/chart show" audience more than likely won't be listening.

I'll still hold off from making my full opinion of Cotton when her show begins as you never know, it might end up pretty good :D

It'll probably be like Grimmy's new show. Quite good but just not right to keep me listening.

Jo is too "old", RussellJames..... I mean, you just have to listen to Lily Allen lyrics to know that you're finished after 30 .... Jo may as well buy herself a zimmer and book her slot in the nursing home :x

Did I hear yesterday, btw, that Stuart off of Jo Whiley's show, has been fired??

I think that Fearne on a weekday slot will prove a big mistake. By Christmas she will proberbly be off as RAJAR figures will no doubt show a huge nosedive in the number of listeners. I think Sara might be after a slot on Radio 2 - Zoe Ball (remember her ?!?!) has got a weekend slot, and it seems to be very popular. Sara might be used to try and remove some of the "older" listeners from radio 1 (please don't take that in an offensive way).

Gordon Brown says there's light at the end of the tunnel..........

I could see Coxy covering for Zoe Ball when she goes on maternity leave. I think alot of what people are saying sounds very far-fetched as regards future schedules, and who will leave. I honestly can't see Moyles leaving the breakfast show anytime soon. The figures are as high as they have ever been. But if he should go, much like someone 127 pages back said, he will probably leave Radio 1 and maybe focus on television. Yes, Radio 2 will probably be his home, but I would imagine I will be in my 30's when that happens.

At some point, Radio 1 are gonna have to poach from local radio, or sign some new talent though to give it a new sound

take control

I was shocked that Sara didn't get Jo's slot! Fearne is very irritating to listen to, and she's never there. But hey, that will probably mean that Sara is covering that slot a lot more. Glad that Greg is now on Daytime. I think there will be another daytime reshuffle within a year though

    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
    • A joke about pirates: ‘but we’re not jumping ship, like someone else’
    • I felt it was much better with the staging and everything.  I still cannot warm to his voice but he's a very good performer. Ireland was everything though.
