BBC Radio 1 announces today that Fearne Cotton is to front the 10.00am-12.45pm, Monday to Friday show in a major shake-up of the station's weekday schedule.

Fearne, who currently presents a weekend programme on the station with Reggie Yates, will now fly solo in her new show.

Radio 1 has also confirmed that Early Breakfast presenter Greg James is heading to afternoons (1.00-4.00pm); while Dev is shifting from Weekend Breakfast to the weekday Early Breakfast Show (4.00-6.30am).

The Live Lounge continues in Fearne's new show with Radio 1 bringing more live music than ever to daytime; and lunchtimes with Greg will still be the place to go for all things movie related – but games and gaming are being added in too.

Fearne says: "I love being at Radio 1 and taking on a weekday show is a dream come true.

"Jo [Whiley] is leaving very big shoes for me to fill and it's nerve wracking. She has been a massive inspiration to me throughout my career so I have a high standard to live up to.

"The live music legacy will live on in the new show and I can't wait to get started."

Greg says: "I didn't think things could get any better when I joined Radio 1 so to move to the lunchtime slot which has had so many great names presenting it is amazing.

"And, as much as I adore my early show, it will be nice to see daylight again!"

Dev says: "This is an amazing opportunity for me to strengthen my broadcasting muscle and become a radio beast!

"It's an honour to keep the nation company in the morning and, of course, warm up for Mr Moyles!"

As a result of changes to the weekday schedule, Edith Bowman will host Weekend Breakfast (7.00-10.00am); Jo Whiley moves to weekend afternoons (1.00-4.00pm); and Reggie Yates keeps the late afternoon slot (4.00-7.00pm).

Nihal, who currently presents the weekend 1.00-4.00pm show, continues with his specialist show on the station.

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, Radio 1, says: "This is our first big shake-up of the weekday schedule for over five years.

"I feel it's the right time to make these changes in order to offer our listeners some exciting new programmes.

"Bringing Fearne to the daytime schedule is really thrilling for us as she has proven herself to be a great broadcaster in the time she has been at the station.

"Greg has also been a real hit with listeners since joining Radio 1 so we believe he's ready for a new slot, and Dev, who recently moved to us from BBC 1Xtra, is a star of the future."

Andy Parfitt, Controller, Radio 1, adds: "BBC Radio 1 must continue to change to connect with a new generation of audiences and this is a significant move, promoting three of our up-and-coming broadcasters into the heart of the schedule.

"We're doing this from a position of strength, we have record audience levels, delivered with major contributions by Jo and Edith and I thank them for that.

"I look forward to a fresh sound to weekends in the autumn and to hearing Fearne, Greg and Dev develop in their new slots."

The changes come into effect from 21 September 2009.

I just heard this on Newsbeat- I can't believe it! Shoving the irksome Nihal away is a great idea, as is replacing Edith, but I really really enjoy Jo's show, and she may be getting on but her audience still enjoy the show (I believe). I like Fearne with Reggie, but on her own she's just a bit dull.

Most importantly, what's happening to Sara?! She should have Jo's slot if they have to move her, she'd be vastly more entertaining than Fearne. This age obsession on Radio 1- sorry, BBC Radio 1- is ridiculous; she must have been chosen over Sara because of age? I presume Coxy's staying in the rubbish Lie-In slot, what a shame.

I am in shock at seeing this! Wasn't expecting it.

I am delighted to see Greg is now going to be at a time that is possible for me to listen to :D and his show leading straight into Scott is perfect.

So shocked at Jo moving to weekends. Wonder if she will reinvent the show or will it be similar to the weekday show; and its gonna be different to listen to Ferne in the mornings. Obviously Jo's features will be gone so it will be interesting to see what new things she will bring to her new show. I don't think Reggie will be too lost without Ferne, he is so used to doing the show on it own!

Interesting to say the least anyway :D

Well done to Greg it'll be good to hear him on weekday afternoons. I'm suprised Sara hasn't been given Jo's show but will reserve judgement on Fearne for now. She's better on her own anyway. We should have seen Greg's move coming - it's obviously when the podcast kicks in.

It'll be weird hearing Edith on weekends as with Jo. I'm a big fan of Jo and can't imagine either current formats on weekends. I have always said movies should be limited to weekends though.

It seems messy to keep moving people on Weekend Breakfast and I'm disappointed Nihal will no longer be on daytime. I really liked his weekend show.

No sign of anything new for Sara who I assume may now become Mills' cover.

Two questions:

Who is going to be the regular cover for Scott? I can't imagine Greg keeping that position.

And: Are the quotes that you can read in the press office statement really quotes of the DJs, or are they faked? I don't believe Jo said something like this:

"I think [Fearne]'s fantastic and I couldn't leave the show in a better pair of hands.

I fear the end of Jo will be nigh in this new ageist BBC business. Weekends are obviously just a sweetener until she bows out properly.

Weekends have gone from becoming mostly young-themed to older orientated. Can't imagine Reggie on the chart full time and I'm suprised Fearne will cope with that busy schedule!

I imagine Nick Grimshaw will - unfortunately - become cover for Scott, especially as he's in for Cox who's in for Whiley today.

Great news for Greg, will be great to hear more of him, as for Fearne, never really been a fan of hers, but we shall see show it pans out.

Can’t believe they’ve given Ediths show to THE DULLEST person on the planet. James is fine in the middle of the night, because people are trying to get to sleep at that time, and he’s perfect for that, but DAYTIME?!?!

FlashFlash song, Welcome Along, playing completely nonsensical extracts from other radio stations?!?! Just how braindead do you have to be to appreciate this cr*p?

I take it you're not a fan of Greg's then...

Wow this is pretty huge news!

Great news for Greg of course! Plus it's a good job that they left Scott alone I would have been most annoyed if they had touched his show.

What will happen when Fearne has TV obligations? She seems to have a lot of time off at the weekend so will this stop now? Otherwise I assume Jo or Sara will be covering her a lot!

To -8- stop trolling the forums.

I tend to listen to Greg whilist driving to work in the early hours of the morning cause the local radio stations where I live are really boring between 5 and 6 am in the car driving for over an hour and a half.

What I dont get is why try and find a replacement for weekend breakfast when Grimmy moved to Colins slot and then move the person again in september?

Fearne doesn't seem to be winning fans at the moment.
fan #1 (or so ;))

I always like Fearne when she does a show on her own, I just can't stand that bloody kindergarden Fearne and Reggie shows... both are better on their own, so that's a pretty good move.

I will still miss Jo. Hope she will be Fearne's cover on her old show...although I doubt that is realistic...
