Michael Jackson has died

it was really strange and sad dj'ing tonight. played lots of michael jackson, and finished with man in the mirror.

here's what i played tonight, in no order and not all together. i broke them up into sets of 2 and 3 throughout the night:-

don't stop till you get enough

blame it on the boogie

shake your body down to the ground

billie jean (2 times through the night)

beat it

bad

i want you back

abc

thriller (2 times through the night)

smooth criminal

the way you make me feel

scream

you rock my world

wanna be startin' somethin'

man in the mirror

When I was about two and a half years old I was apparently obsessed by Michael Jackson - had tshirts and everything - so it's scary that my first "idol" had died.

i'm the same. the compilation i put together yesterday was off the old cd's i have in the cupboard. i must of had some of them for 10-15 years. although i've grown older and gone into other music, i still like lots of stuff jackson has done. i drove back down the m54 tonight with his music playing, usually after 6 hours of dj'ing with loud music i just hear the engine.

i didn't play it out but it was on in the car on the way back. it's amazing how much of a great record the jackson 5's 'i'll be there' really is, as someone who appreciates motown and soul music anyway. it has to rank up as one of the best.

on the grid.

R.I.P. Michael J. This is so sad. I remember him from my teenage years.... :-(

I hope there's nothing more sinister to all this.

Moyles, btw, spoke particularly well about him yesterday morning, and sounded very genuinely concerned. loved the 2nd half of the Golden Hour too yesterday.

Sad news but realistically I knew he'd never manage these gigs. Silly people for throwing away lots for the tickets.

Just wondering, Jono, why on earth did you think he'd never manage them?

He just never struck me as someone who could manage stress. He only appeared in the press conference for two minutes and with the court case he was constantly in and out of hospital. Quite rightly so - a court case is a big stress - but I don't think he'd have managed them all. Some of the dates had already been rescheduled. I just don't think he was in the right state of mind, and was only doing it to pay off huge debts.

its been said that he was getting stuff of different doctors & also he was allegedly addicted to OxyContin & Demerol which are a lethal combination :(

it seems that an hour after the doctor gave him a injection of Demerol he stopped breathing, but a overdose could have been reversed if the doctor had the correct drugs on him.

I'm actually more shocked than anything. He was without a doubt a unique character, with a very creative brain. There have been very few like him, and I doubt there will be anyone like him in the future.

I found out shortly after 12.30 on Thursday night. It was the main headline on BBC Ceefax. I was away from the net at the time.

I've also just browsed the MJFC Forum.

You can feel the anguish in their posts, as each and every fan hopes that the news wasn't true. You can't help but feel sorry for them

The details of Michael Jackson's autopsy have been leaked, reportedly showing the star to be in an advanced state of decline at the time of his death.

According to The Sun, Jackson was "severely emaciated" and weighed 8st 1oz when he died, while his stomach was empty except for partially-dissolved pills that have been sent for tests.

The singer is said to have been wearing a wig and had lost almost all his hair, with only a "peach fuzz" covering his scalp.

His thighs, shoulders and hips were marked with needle wounds resulting from painkiller injections, while four needle entry sites were found near his chest following failed attempts to restart his heart with adrenaline.

A source close to the Jackson entourage said: "Michael's family and fans will be horrified when they realise the appalling state he was in.

"He was skin and bone, his hair had fallen out and had been eating nothing but pills when he died. Injection marks all over his body and the disfigurement caused by years of plastic surgery show he'd been in terminal decline for years."

He must have been so so so scary with no wig

Here is a picture of what he would have looked like if he didn't...do stuff?

The story gets worse as we go deeper, by the looks of things.

I don't know if this has been said in here already but apparantly (according to the Mail on Sunday), turns out his family were considering "forcibly admitting him to a rehabillitation centre just two weeks before his death", because they were "so concerned about his addiction to powerful painkillers".

Now that's an odd turn. I wonder how no-one noticed his health was in such a deep state of decline?

The most heroic act is the one that no-one knows about.

    • Surprised to learn Radio 2 and 6 Music are moving away from X and Facebook, I would have thought there's more appeal in Radio 1 doing that instead. Their target audiences still use Facebook, and it's still a key way to reach a good mix of audiences. https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/05/bbc-radio-2-and-6-music-quit-facebook-and-x-publishing/
    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
