What pisses you off about Radio 1?

Please tell me I'm not alone in this, but, are there more and more things about R1 that are bugging you at the moment?

I enjoy most of what I hear on R1 before some smartass tells me to switch off, however, certain things are annoying me.

1. Sara Cox on tapes every week is annoying me. Why can't the one show she

does in a week be live, because it does spoil the enjoyment of the lie-

in.

2. Presenters who persist in telling us too often about their TV stuff. Once a

week - fine. Every day - a different ballgame.

3. Grimmy - I don't actually like the fact that he's got Colin Murray's position.

Colin was "unique" and Grimmy is a disappointment. I didn't like him in

weekend breakfast, and I like him even less in this 10 pm slot.

4. Edith and the movie stuff. I like Edith very much, however I, and other

members on here, do not feel she is ideally suited to talking about films all

the time, and she needs another presenter on her show too. When Colin was with her, I used to really look forward to the shows. :-0

Just a few points.

PS: 5. OWOs on Scott's show. I have dealt with these by switching the radio OFF at 5:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday. At least one problem is now resolved.

Good god Viv, are you ever happy?

Grimmy is fine in his new slot. They have totally changed the show so it's different from what Colin used to do and more suited to the kiddies.

TV stuff is something they are doing in their lives and really that's what they are talking about. What they do all the time.

As for OWO it's excellent and should stay forever :D

God, where do I start?

1) The TV DJs who are hired for their looks and name more than their talents. Fearne Cotton LOOKS great. She's very hot and if I ever had the chance to woo her, I'd try (and fail) like you wouldn't believe. Sadly, her looks mean jack-all in the world of radio where the importance lies in your voice and your words, and Fearne simply isn't a very good DJ. She has no air of authority to her voice nor gives any reason to put any trust into what she says. She's just a girl who got lucky with a radio gig. Grimmy annoys the hell out of me and is another guy who have been pushed ahead of real talent like your Greg James's and that ilk. Radio One has a real fascination with pre-radio famous people who look good and chat sh*t. There is a reason as to why Greg James, Chris Moyles, Scott Mills and Zane Lowe are the four best presenters on the station and some of the best in the whole country. They are radio born and bred and in the case of Zane, the sheer passion for music is incredible and can't not be on the radio. It was made for it. More DJs like that, please. Not Fearne, or Reggie, or Grimmy, or Kelly O (who thankfully should be done now).

2) Edith. Move her to weekends with her movies, and move Greg James into that slot. Reasons threefold: 1) his show is better than hers, 2) movies should be kept to a once/twice a week slot, minimum, and 3) it might force Greg to change his style a little bit so as not to be too much of a Scott Mills clone. Plus, the handovers would be pretty fun, and they need a new early-morning presenter to keep the fresh blood coming in. Greg has proven he's a keeper, so move him up already.

3) A severe lack of rock music in prime time. I like Radio One but I don't want to hear N-Dubz all the time. There was a point a couple of weeks ago where the playlist included Shinedown, Linkin Park, Nickelback, Green Day, and Enter Shikari at the same time. That was glorious. More of that, please, but with emphasis on other rock songs too. I know Slipknot didn't work out for R1, but there are some tremendous songs that would suit the station but will no doubt get overlooked. I'm looking directly at the next Marilyn Manson single here ("Leave A Scar").

4) Jo Whiley. Why? Why not?

5) The faint smell of patronisation. Kinda fits into my first point. All these younger DJs seem to have this patronising style about them whereby they treat us all like dim-witted kids who need things spelt out to us. All the DJs need to look at Moyles and see why people like him so much - it's because he generally treats everyone like adults with brains and even himself gets annoyed with some of the ridiculous ways used to patronise us.

6) Hack radio. If I hear "Flash Flash" or "Face in the bowl" again, I may smash my head into a brick wall. Similarly, Scott tends to annoy me with his segment segues: "You know cheese, right? Off of cows and stuff. Well, I was on the INTERNET WHERE I GET ALL OF MY MATERIAL THESE DAYS and saw this awesome new cheese glove where it's a glove made entirely out of cheese." and then five minutes later he'll segue into "You know the colour Green?" If it's a parody of radio then it's a joke God knows how many years beyond it's date. Which makes me believe that it's just Scott's style of radio. Annoying as hell. Just so forced and unnatural and hacky and by-the-book.

That's about it.

I agree with all apart from bits of 3.

I don't want to hear N-Dubz but then I don't want to hear tons of rock music.

But, to be honest, thats just a difference in taste which is something Radio 1 (Sorry - BBC R1) have to try and deal with all the time....

My main points:

1) Incase production standards

2) Lose Jo Whiley and Nihal (M1ITCHELL talks about new presenters being patronising/false, they are something else!)

3) Give Moyles a little more slack in places.

4) Ditch Switch (never going to happen but worth a shot.....)

5) Perhaps re-vamp Ediths show and a few weekend shows....

and finally.....

6) STOP BOWING TO PUBLIC PRESSURE AND STICK TO WHAT YOUR GOOD AT!

Yes!! When I'm happy, I'm really happy!! I just like to have a moan now and again (well, every day really!!)

They have totally changed the show so it's different from what Colin used to do and more suited to the kiddies.

There's enough stuff for kiddies during the day!! The 10 pm onwards thing was special.... when John Peel did it, then Colin Murray... it made a lot of sense and was very interesting.

I agree with most of what Mitch3LL says, apart for the "rock" comments!!

Still love R1... there's just a few things that need a "tweek", me thinks.

I miss Colin Murray so much, I gave Grimmy a go but I just can't cope with his "not quite switch but still aimed at tweens" style.

Ediths show is okay to drop in and out of, but she just fills the rest of her show with unsubstantial effortless features. Which are fine... but not as many and often as she does them!

Whiley needs to be given a more specialist show again, she trys to fit in as much new music as she can, but its just not enough for her. Get her onto 6Music

I think Grimmy isn't as bad as what I thought but I've made the move to 5Live for Richard Bacon at 10pm now. I'm still Radio 1's target audience yet I've been driven away to a station that's target audience probably isn't aimed at me.

Is 5Live on FM? Ive heard Bacons pretty good, should give him a try sometime.

You're right Viv, they do need to bring new talent in, but as Ben Cooper and Andy Parfit said, its a bit of a conveyor belt, and really someones got to drop off before they can bring a newbie in. They are really looking closely at student radio to pick out some talent, they cant steal from commercial anymore. And once they do find someone new, where do they put them? Early Breakfast is the normal training ground for the newbies, but until Greg chooses to move on up, they can't really stick a fresh face into the middle of a daytime schedule, its not fair.

Afraid not. I am fortunate enough to get it on DAB as the BBC stations are strong here (if it wasn't it'd be not be happening). It's on MW and of course, online, if not.

I think we're in a fortunate point with this credit crunch to stop Radio 1 management picking more TV hosts. I doubt we'd be seeing Fearne and Reggie and Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1 if they'd joined recently. Now they want cheap stars so they (fortunately for those working up the ladder) to other radio stations and student radio so we'll hopefully see future DJs like Greg James and JK and Joel.

They can always push people off the conveyor belt, you don't always have to wait for them to get off themselves. It worked in cases like Sara Cox and Chris Evans.

909/693 AM, since Jugalug is being a cunt about it.

Thanks very much, I'll see if I can get it later :-D

Where to even start with the pushing, what ever they do they have to persuade Greg to get off his Early Morning chair to let the newbie join comfortably.

Do you think they've got plans to get a newbie into grimmys old weekend shift? Surely that can't have that high listening figures, they should be able to train someone up there too.

Yeah, not sure if theres any white mainstream DJ's on 1Xta at the moment tho, which is fine because they can bring though some of their DJs to balance the very whiteness (or orangeness) of Radio1. Saying that, we don't know who R1 & 1Xta have waiting in the wings, such as runners and stuff, coming up the route Annie Mac took.

Well that's easy:

"Greg, move slots or you won't have a job."

Simple enough. The perk of R1 picking people from student radio is that they can mould them into their own model of DJ without allowing personalities to develop and make sure they aren't "bigger than the station" like Moyles is. It also means they can sign them to proper contracts and underpay them because they won't be taking people from commercial radio who can probably negotiate better deals (which is good for the BBC but stupid for the development of the station when there are plenty of good DJs who can't make it into the BBC and end up doing well on commercial radio who would suit R1 perfectly. If I get into DJing and end up going to a local station and becoming really good even though my dream is to be good enough to make it to R1, the current procedure makes it nigh on impossible for me).

And in deals like that, it helps the BBC have presenters further over a barrel. They can't get away with it with Moyles and Mills currently. The only downfall is that when both of them are gone, although they'll be in a good place financially and contractually, R1 will be at a major loss of talent. You get what you pay for and I'd happily pay $500,000 to have a Moyles rather than $100,000 for a Grimshaw.

Yeah, honestly I can't see him saying "No I'd rather stay doing early mornings then keep having a job here"

Well they know that at student radio people get the opportunity to make loads of mistakes, and get to know the sea from the comfort of their own rock pools, we get the chance to be anything and everything at our station. And you're right, they can take someone whos had a couple of years experience running the desk and constructing shows, and mold them into someone who is right for radio 1, allowing their personalities to develop. Mills said that he didn't find his personality until he was on Radio 1, despite all the radio he'd already done. Then again, most commercial stations don't give you the space to have a personality, so how Moyles managed to build such a big and strong personality... Hmmm
