forget German measles, we are all going to die from Mexico flu apparently

A new flu virus suspected of killing at least 60 people in Mexico has the potential to become a pandemic, the World Health Organization's chief says. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8018356.stm

there have been reports of a few people in NYC with symptoms & a man in London who is a flight attendant just back from Mexico !

*runs about shouting "don't panic - DON'T PANIC"

As I said, my parents are convinced it'll come to the UK, and both their surgeries have taken special courses on what to happen when it arrives. Apparently you need a 'flu buddy' who stays with you at all times, or something. And 1 in 10 people will die, supposedly, though if it makes you feel any better, the statistics were 1 in 4 a few months ago.

They're genuinely concerned about going on holiday in May and leaving me in case it happens while they're away - makes for hilariously light dinner table conversation, I can tell you.

Someone happy adopt me, please! :)

I have a strange reliance on Great Britain to protect me from such things. All stand for the National Anthem.

Same. I don't have much else to believe in.

In this country we seem to live without too many major threats, especially our generation. No wars, major natural disasters or serious illnesses really. In a lot of less developed countries, people have to live with their siblings, children or parents dying from waterborne or sexually transmitted diseases or generally things that we are all vaccinated against here.

That's slightly aside. I am a little concerned about this, but hopefully they will manage to keep people showing signs quarantined. The 1918 flu epidemic killed mostly young, healthy people, which is a little worrying. While we have better medical treatment now, we are have even more global flows of people to transport these things quickly around the world.

Still though, not much I can do about it...

I did what now?

Mum reckons most affected will be babies and the old... I am a bit worried about this though, and why have i got deja vu?

Officials said most of those killed so far were young adults - rather than more vulnerable children and the elderly.

ok i really am gonna start worrying if it gets into the UK

Forget latent terrorism and the passing recession, the real extant threats are climate change and potentially this.

We are due a global pandemic killer virus and whilst it's okay living in denial and laughing it off you have to treat every new viral threat to the human race with great caution and apprehension - it could very well be the next Spanish flu.

I'd also like to point out that you won't necessarily die if you get it - most people will recover. That's probably the safest thing actually because that way you'll become immune.

week off work :woo:

only ever had the flu once, proper flu not one of them colds that people say "i have the flu" proper flu you feel really bad, cannot move about, puking & ahem poo'ing etc not nice.

Although all of the deaths so far have been in Mexico, the flu is spreading in the United States and suspected cases have been detected elsewhere:

* Ten New Zealand students are among a group which travelled to Mexico have tested positive for influenza A - making it "likely", though not definite, that they are infected with swine flu, said Health Minister Tony Ryall

* In France, a top health official told Le Parisien newspaper there were unconfirmed suspicions that two individuals who had just returned from Mexico may be carrying the virus

* Spain's health ministry says three people who returned from a trip from Mexico with flu symptoms are in isolation and being tested

* In Israel, medics are testing a 26-year-old man who has been taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms after returning from a trip to Mexico

some G men in the US have been giving a press conference on how they are going to handle it, i wonder Hmmmm i bet the The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) have something to do with creating it

That would be really clever of them, considering there's one every 60-80 years, and has been for a very long time. -_______-.

PS: It's not called Mexico flu, it's called Swine flu, and it already more serious than Bird flu because of how quickly it mutated into a human virus.

oh don't get me wrong, i know various things come & go every so often (im not :wacky: )

i did read/see on tv that Europeans are less susceptible to things like this due to genes passed down from the people who survived the black death make us more resistant ' GO Europe :P '

but i wouldn't anything past The FB I ;)

This is very scary indeed, and it may already be in Britain:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5225729/Swine-flu-two-admitted-to-hospital-in-Scotland-as-world-braces-for-more-cases.html

The fact that it has killed 81 with a reported 1000 cases does make for horrid statistics if it really does breakout. Even seeing this for the first time yesterday, it seemed so much more real than the past Bird Flu panics. Something else that is quite strange, is that no one reported this until it hit the US, now it's already spread a long way before the media really took interest.

No matter how scary it is, I still prefered watching Sky News today because of the lack of Recession repetitiveness.

It's had more time to develop in Mexico, it's just not been reported. I'm sure in a few days we'll see more symptoms from the outside of there. Also, in Mexico, it was in a very highly populated area where it could have thrived, it probably will develop more elsewhere.

The "black death" is still reported thousands of times per year to the World Health Organisation, particularly in Africa and some parts of Asia. I find it highly unlikely that people from Europe are any less likely to catch a disease, and even less likely that immunity from such things can be passed down centuries through genes. Plus even if it did, what on earth would the bubonic plague have to do with swine flu?

    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
