As I wrote on the Sony site:

Really silly list of winners this year. Bar Kerrang winning SOTY, I don''t understand the thought process of the judges unless they''re all 40+ Daily Mail readers. I fear for radio''s inside mentality if this is what the industry deems to be the tip of the top. And Neil Fox? Hooray for hack radio tosh

I stayed up for this?

I just cant believe Radio 1 has been hammered this badly. Nothing of note, i'd have expected at least Zane to get a gold somewhere!

And Moyles should have easily took the Breakfast show award. The competition was poor in comparison!

take control

Only highlight for me is Mark Radcliffe winning a gold. Its very well deserved. His show with Maconie is actually brilliant

legend, a true no frills whitty broadcaster. glad things have been going great since he left radio 1.

there seems to be a massive bias against radio 1 though, maybe gambo has fixed the votes.

on the grid.

May 12, 2009 - New Sony Radio Award host Chris Evans stole the show at this year's event, picking up two prizes himself. The Radio 2 DJ's drivetime show took the Entertainment Award while Evans was also named Music Radio Personality of the Year.

Magic 105.4's Neil Fox picked up the Gold Award and BBC Radio 3 was named UK Station of the Year for the first time ever. Three of the five station of the year awards went to commercial radio, but it was the BBC's night - the corporation took the lion's share of the gold prizes dished out.

BBC 5 Live stood on the winners' podium for the Sports Award - taking Gold at the Sonys for their coverage of the 2008 Olympics. It was one of five golds for 5 Live - others included the Speech Award for Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, and the Breakfast Show Award - picked up by Nicky Campbell and his team.

There were four awards in total - two gold and two bronze - for prison radio station Electric Radio Brixton. The station, based at HMP Brixton in London, took Gold in the Community Award and the Listener Participation Award.

Special Awards went to Paul Brown for being 'a champion about all that is best about British radio', and BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater for 'his 40 year dedication to our medium'.

Tim Blackmore, chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards, said: "This has been a difficult year for UK Radio. One in which all sides have experienced tough challenges. but through it all, hundreds of hours of great radio and audio have still been created. More people are listening to radio in the UK than at any time in the last 10 years."

Presenters of the awards included Ronan Keating, Frank Skinner, Philip Glenister, Sharleen Spiteri and Kate Thornton.

Matt Fincham must have gone:

Disappointed about the Sonys tonight, but on a lighter note I did get to meet Rolf Harris!

Have to say I totally agree with Sam there. Such a shambles the awards were and Scott said himself he knew that he wasn't going to win as soon as that Phil went on stage. When he started saying about energetic I thought he meant Zane but Evans? pfft! :bah:

Pile of absolute shite it was, I will never get those hours back

"I feel that across the portfolio of stations I look after – Radio 1, 1Xtra and the Asian Network – we had a very strong set of nominations and Radio 1 in particular with 11 nominations," he said.

"It was just one of those years. I was very pleased that the 1Xtra team was recognised [with the gold award in the station imaging category]."

Moyles said last week that he was about to start negotiating a new contract with the station. Parfitt said last night that he never commented on DJs' contracts.

"All controllers say that they are happy with the schedule they have and I am delighted with the schedule we have got. We have some great creative broadcasters and had some great Rajar results last week. I feel we are on song," said the Radio 1 controller.

"But Radio 1 is like a conveyor belt and we have to keep bringing in new talent. We have brought in new talent in Greg James and Nick Grimshaw and we are constantly introducing new young talent onto the team. I am happy with the way we are at the moment."

Parfitt said the ages of Radio 1's staff – Tim Westwood is 51, Parfitt 50 – were "largely irrelevant". "There is no one in the UK at the moment who could say they are a contender for Westwood's hip-hop crown," he added.
