Radio 1 believes DJs are too old

Well that pretty much only leaves Greg James, Fearne, Reggie, Nick and Annie.

I think Annie Mac is 30, so she'd have to go too.

What a bleak prospect it would be to lose all the presenters/DJs who are over 30. Their age brings them experience and makes them far more professional than some of the younger people at Radio 1 (Greg James excepted). I would be off elsewhere like a shot if Radio 1 did decide to get rid of them.

Then again, I'm ancient, not part of the R1 demographic and should probably be mumbling and dribbling in an old people's home somewhere staring at daytime telly.

PS. Re. Augusta's comment: Colin has not been 'sidelined' he is free to do pretty much exactly what he wants. I think he is very happy where he is. I totally agree on the subject of Sara Cox though. I'm missing her already.

Its certainly an interesting topic, and it brings me back to a recent radio interview Chris Moyles did with Steve Wright on Radio 2 where he refered to himself as a person who does Radio for kids. I'm 27 and I've come to a crossroad where I don't know if I still should be listening to Radio 1 or 2. Both provide some good radio at times, but at other times, especially at Weekends I feel neither station appeals to me. And I think what we need is a station between Radio 1 and 2 where the audience can go, and it would also give the likes of Mills and Moyles a new platform to present Radio aimed at there age group. DAB Radio has never really caught on, but if the BBC were to introduce a new station aimed at the 25-45 age group with these big names at the helm it would be a big suscess as currently a station like this is needed. At the moment Radio 1 is very confused and perhaps it is time to let the likes of Greg and Fearne and Reggie to take on bigger roles at the station.

If people like the type of radio they like, they'll listen to it.

There are young people that like Classic FM and probably even older people who enjoy Moyles in the morning.

Bottom line, you can't stop people from listening to the type of radio they like.

I don't see what the big deal is. Surely they cannot sack any presenter over 30, that would be plain ludicrous. I also do not understand why the hell commercial radio would have a stink over Radio one "not serving their demograpic".

Ironically, Richard Skinner is on XFM. He is the oldest presenter on XFM and the only one not to have his picture on the website. He once worked for radio one,.. before most of us were born.

wonder if they would get rid of andy parfitt, and bring in someone younger.

I doubt it, just yet. Give him a few more years yet. He has done a brilliant job at Radio 1/1Xtra/6 Music, etc so far and it hasen't slipped.

Yet....*fingers crossed*

Commercial radio will complain about anything they can to try and ruin R1. Instead of upping their game, they want R1 to lower theirs.

Lets be honest here. If everyone but Moyles (and co), Scott (and co) and Zane left. Who'd miss them?

Don't get me wrong, I like Vernan, Nihal and Coxy.. but seriously, who'd miss them?

To be honest, I think Moyles and Scott are pure entertainers and Zane is good at what he does, but everyone else I can only see being there because it's a good job. Greg James is young and I think he's alright too, he's getting the entertainment side (from what I've heard when he's done the SMShow).

When Wiley came back, as lovely as she probably is... her show took a nose dive.. because I think Coxy did her show REALLY well, she made it entertaining with her childish ways (and I mean that as a positive).

Westwood - What a waste of time he is on there, comes on loads of dodgy sayings and complete turd music (lets be honest).

Annie Macs mash up - your head needs to be mashed up to listen to her for a few hours. The Surgery - That's something different, so a good thing, I think.

We really wouldn't miss anyone if they all left and they kept Scott, Moyles and Zane... I think they're focussing their attention on the wrong people. Keep the DJ's who're consistant with their ratings... and get rid of the more boring DJ's (Jo, Edi, Westwood, Kissy, Huw Stevens) etc.

That's my 2pence worth anyway.

Well let's not forget that all of the specialist DJs are getting on a bit. But that's what listeners want, surely? They want someone who has experience and has been in the field a bit. You don't see artists at the BRITs and NME thanking some 20 year old kid for playing their records. They thank Annie Nightingale, John Peel, Huw Stephens, Zane, Westwood, etc. You can't just get rid of them.

I think that Radio One would be a far worse station without Westwood, Zane, Coxy, Moyles, Mills and even Greg James at this point. If Fearne, Reggie, Nihal, Edith, Whiley and Vernon left, I wouldn't be too upset about it. If Coxy left, it'd be a shame. If Zane left, a giant hole would need to be filled. Ditto Westwood, but with an even bigger hole. Moyles and Mills are pretty much the best prime-time presenters in radio at this point. And losing Greg would be a major shame as he seems to be the last remaining hope for Radio One as they'll need a radio-based kid taking over once Moyles and Mills move around, rather than some TV-turned-radio hack brought in via their name.

Who would miss them? Me. The quality of the station would suffer hugely.

Age shouldn't matter.

Is is bad to say I would miss Chris Cox more than Nihal? The biggest reason I listen to Nihal at the weekends! Plus I love the 3:15 Fact Machine.

Which brings me to...who says it's the 3:15 Fact Machine?? It sounds like Scott but ima not sure :|

Why do I believe this article is true. I get the feeling in 5 years time I won't be listning to Radio 1.

i almost did stop listening 5 years ago, if it wern't for scott mills re-igniting my interest when he started filling in for sara cox on afternoons in 2004.

so parfitt and co, dj's are good just becuase they are young? radio 1 started stabbing themselves with a massive rusty knife starting on march 26th 2004, and have lost pints upon pints of blood by now. so they are keen on reggie yates? brilliant. radio 1's two biggest assets for daytime are moyles and mills and they are 34, the teenie boppers find them entertaining as far as i know, but who cares if they don't?! they are the best the station has by far.

you can't rely on kids for constant listenership because when they get home all they want to do is watch ben 10, mtv and listen to their i pods. they aren't interested in radio 1 like i used to be at 12 and 13. i was a one off, plus the station drew me in back then. most local radio dj's on galaxy and kerrang i hear around here i would put above bowman, fearne & reggie, grimmy.

it's also spreading into specialist shows too, you wouldn't believe how good dance anthems sounded on 6 music last sunday when i was driving down the m25 back home.

i agree changes need to be made, but the biggest one of all is the management, maybe they are getting to old and past it.

on the grid.

  • 1 year later...

moyles should stay wib breakfast and scott @drivetime grimmy should do a different slot and Greg should do a different slot because I love Greg's hair so it is really annoying when I cant listen to him because Im at school! But they should get rid of the older ones but not Scott and Moyles coz they get loads of listeners! Ones like Sara Cox and Jo Whiley should go though! Then Matt Edmondson should get weekend slot saturday and sunday, so they can get rid of Vernon as he does lots of TV work. XD

ezez XD

Now that is a new one. I've never heard someone say they want to hear more of someone on the radio because of their hair! Though perhaps you make a valid point that Greg can't appeal to many of the people who would normally listen to him becuase they are at school.

I don't think age is a reason to get of rid of DJs. If they're relevant to and connect with the 15-24 target audience and are performing well ratings-wise then there's no reason to get rid of those DJs.

Tim Westwood, Chris Moyles, Sara Cox, Scott Mills, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson, Judge Jules are all in their 30s, 40s or 50s but appeal to younger audiences. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

And I'd be pretty sure that Andy Parfitt feels the same, so I doubt there'd be any Bannister-esque changes any time soon.

I don't think Vernon's TV work is a reason to get rid of him. As far as I'm aware he doesn't take a ridiculously large amount of time off as Fearne did when she was on weekends. He seems pretty committed to his show, even doing the show following the revelations about those naughty texts he was sending where many others would hide away to escape the media for a few weeks.

Same goes for John Peel, his appeal was more transcendent of age than some of those other examples though (The average TOG would probably have liked Peel's shows, but definitely not something like Moyles' shows, etc)

I admit that Radio 1 maybe should get rid of their oldest DJs.. But I couldn't bear it if Scott leaves. Plus, the station would be awful with just random young people.

Even though Radio 1 is for teenagers, everybody I know listens to HEART. Ergh. ERGH. Which is more for OAPs with the music they play. As always, I had an argument with my friends today about the Heart vs. R1 thing today. It resulted in me storming off after shouting at them lots. They just don't get it :(

They say R1 talk too much :(

    • Yeah he's on more than usual including this Sunday and then 3 more shows in May according to the above. Makes me think it's James for the weekend shows also
    • For some reason there is 'Summer on Radio 1' listed on Sunday 2nd June, could this be replacing M&M until July?
    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
