A little lackluster these days?

Just wondering how everyone is finding the show these days. The podcasts still deliver fine material but in a three hour show it is difficult to stay tuned in and focused.

I get the feeling Scott's need to talk celebrities seems to bring the show down some what compared to when he first began on afternoons. It was much more about having a laugh, talking about day to day life, prank calls and the normo lifestyle.

Now the show seems to have built up this image that Scott is a superstar on a huge salary and has little in common with his listeners. He now talks of his trips to Japan and spending time with The Hoff in America. The differences between Beccy and Chappers and Scott now seem to be showing.

He doesn't quite seem the same as the sort of guy you once knew for being like you but being on the radio with his companions. That role seems to now go to Greg James.

I think it may be time to spice up the features a bit now too. Beccy's Bargains has served the show well but it seems a bit bland and the lack of Badly Bleeped TV is showing.

I couldn't agree more really. I used to listen to scott thinking "This is sooo brilliant" It was fun, a good contrast to Chris, and generally quite quirky. Now, it's almost lost it's appeal. It's a shame, as Scotts good at what he does, but needs to get the balance right between his lifestyle, and the listeners'. I think the fact that the whole "Scott turned right on an airplane" thing shows clearly what direction the shows taken.

Get it sorted Mills :)

he does talk excessively about holidays on a larger scale. i remember when he would talk about holidays with laura which was more entertaining as it sounded like the sort of thing the every day person would do. the tales arent the same now. i actually had got quite used to greg james on afternoons as he was a breath of fresh air whereas scott goes on holidays now and doesnt have anything new to add to the show :( and he has blatantly forgot about his fans too :P

I still maintain my belief that Scott became as successful as he is because of the prank calls, funny features, and stupid topics of chat. All these seem to have diminished over 2008, which as I have mentioned before, disappoints me. It appears to have evolved into just a generalised chat show where they play it as the show moves on. This has made it into 'just another show' in my opinion rather than the one that stands out.

I don't think this can be blamed on the BBC becoming rule lovers, after all, major prank calls stopped pre Brand and Ross saga and Moyles has increased his listener interaction, so there's no reason for Scott lessening it.

Oh What's Occurring is fine but I much preferred it when the elements of the game stood as their own separate features and more was made of them.

Greg told us theres a bit of a lock down on everything at the moment after BrandRossGate, a lot of features have had to be shelved, even Windtunnel has had to stop!!

In general I agree with the comment about Scott not connecting with the people anymore. Every show its "I'm living the dream", "When I was in America with the Hoff" etc etc.

I sent Scott an e-mail about this and his jet-setting ways, needless to say, he didn't reply ;)

I really miss Badly Bleeped TV and the Revenge Calls or the Phone Pranks, I just kinda wish that everything wasn't so Taboo nowadays. It's like Health and Safety, you can't do anything because of restrictions.

Bring Back the Features Mills :)

I've only been a proper listener for a year so I can't really say whether he is better now than he as although I have heard a number of people say he has gone down hill. Chappers is the more relatable member of the team and, as much as I adore Scott, I think the show would be bland without him, it was definatly a good move giving him the lie-in (plus it got rid of Dicka dn Dom). The Scott Mills show is still the best show I've heard on the radio though.

Completely agree with this!! I couldn't put my finger on what has been wrong for a while now, but this sums it up neatly.

And bring back Random Acts of Kindness please! Scott used to be fantastic at dealing with this stuff!

i thought there would have been some new stuff in the show after the xmas holidays, i don't mind the celeb chat as long as the actual celeb is on the show, the hoff is ok as long as its not all the time, but the name dropping has become more apparent in the last couple of months.

Most likely that this is the exact cause of it. The BBC has to be seen as clear cut now, nothing naughty or potentially controversial anymore because of two idiots (but also worsened by the media). The media regulator also received a complaint about badly bleeped tv, so I doubt we will be hearing that feature again. Shame really:cry:

They've been told "If theres any doubt, leave it out".

Which is a shame, but they have to watch their backs for a bit, but it means they are all having to challenge themselves to be able to entertain without relying on all their normal features.

Argh! Can't believe someone complained about badly bleeped TV.. Sometimes it was a bit borderline, but there was nothing actually rude about it.

They said they weren't doing it anymore because people were recognising the number and there was a lot of problems with the text service (TOWDS lost the sim card)

Ohhh I see. Was the number that famous?! I suppose it had a catchy tune to go with it...

Well if someone was planning on using it, thus had it saved on their phone just in case, was then given it by someone they had asked for their number, they would then notice it was the same.

*Sighs* ahhhh the good old days

"07770774914 07770774914 FLIRT DIVERT!!" I'm sure most people remembered that after a while, after all what's a sung jingle if it isn't catchy

I hope the team have read all of the threads like this and seen the amount of times RAOK has popped up from a lot of people. Hello Scott, it's definitely wanted.

To be honest I haven't listened to enough of the show over the last few months to judge, however I listen to Scott Mills for some random irrelevant chat and daft humour. I hope the show hasn't lost this feel. I'm going to make a concerted effort to get some more of the podcasts this year. I wish they did a weekly Moyles style one but that's for another topic.

Hmmm, I disagree with your OP Jono. I used to dislike many of the things on Scott's show, and for a while I stopped listening. But these days, I'm laughing out loud at much of the show, and always download the podcast. I don't think I need to relate to something in a 'yes, I did that only the other day' sort of way.

    • Arielle is in for Greg on Monday 27th May.
    • He’s definitely gotten better and the show has sounded fine this week. I think it been at its best when it’s been Katie and Jamie or Vick and Katie. Vick and Jamie are ok together, but I do think the show sounds better when it’s Vick and Katie and therefore I still don’t really understand the point of the trio.    Jamie is, however, a lot better than Danny Beard!
    • The RAJAR coming on later this year reflecting later summer to autumn will be interesting to how it reflects Matt and Mollie in afternoons to the revised changes on radio 1’s new music slots and the schedule re-shuffling Radio 3 introducing a new slate of programmes. Then, later on this year have speech radio stations having domestic political coverage of the election but also America’s presidential election.
    • I actually caught snippets of today’s show, and I found it much better than the last time I listened. I have made it no secret that I like Jamie on the radio, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Matt & him together last year. People have criticised him for not being relatable, but I have to agree with the comment above that I have always found him a naturally warm person to listen to. Maybe the going home set up was something that needed settling in and things are starting to take shape.  It must have been difficult for him joining an established duo in Vick & Katie to begin with.  Jamie was great on something songs today, fully engaged in the caller and sounded like a real presenter. Maybe he is doing as a lot of us hoped and really learning as he goes, how to do it properly.
    • Agree with this. The anti-Jamie feeling was IMO quite influenced by the negativity around him replacing Jordan, since Jordan was exceptional and also universally loved. When people mention Danny and Jamie in the same sentence about bad hiring decisions I almost choke - Jamie may not be perfect but he's several leagues better than Danny already and has bags of potential. Danny is poor and has shown zero potential...
    • Jamie started 4 March, and the figures only going up to 31 March, so it isn't reliable. But it has shown the numbers have dropped in afternoons compared to last quarter. It looks like it's Capital's gain.
    • Do these audience figures reflect Jordan leaving and Jamie replacing him?
    • I think Jamie is really starting to settle into the role well. He comes across as really warm, and genuinely invested in the listeners when he’s talking to them which is nice. I think he’s building a really great relationship with Vicki and Katie too. His recent great company podcast is great too, where he has quite a deep chat with someone new each week. He’s clearly a very genuine person and I think he has some real potential.
    • Most probably. But do wonder what the future of the relax themed programmes will be when they officially wind down that service.
    • I think it's just to replace Wind Down presents... which was in that timeslot, and I'm guessing Chillout Anthems was just a buffer since it'll still be played at 06:00 on Sundays.
    • With listening on the U.K. for the industry in general it is good overall as most stations reach is on the up and shows radio to be more sustainable and stable outlet than linear televisions channels. This RAJAR I think with the increase shift to DAB+ the BBC will be able to say it has it’s audiences for the proposed new stations it wishes to launch and think the new innovative ideas that it seems Jack himself can take credit for on the new music show think the younger under 30 gen z demographic could increase se in that time-slot.
    • Conor Knight is in for Sam & Danni on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. It's Radio 1 at Parklife, 13.00-16.00 on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. Matt & Mollie are in for Greg from Monday 10th to Friday 14th June - it's just Matt on the Thursday. It's Radio 1 at Download, 13.00-16.00 on Friday 14th June.
    • Rajar looking healthy this quarter, with the numbers staying fairly stable.
    • It's made it into the Daily Mail as another reason to bash the station. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13417631/bbc-radio-2-facebook-tiktok-instagram.html
    • I expect that the axing of Chill Out Anthems may be related to the decommissioning and shutfdown of Radio 1 Relax. I assume soon BBC could announce or make official when it’s going to be shutdown
