Hey everyone - just seen this thread.

Thanks SO much for your support. Your comments mean a lot as you're on a neutral site so can say what you want about my Surgery deps.

There seems to have been a lot of Surgery bashing recently (rightly or wrongly) so I'm going to do everything I can to get everyone on here / aled.info and perhaps slightly less likely cm.net to listen to it and get something out of it.

All I know is that this Sunday's show is about depression and speaking to people who feel things have got on top of them a bit lately and then the week after we're off due to an Oasis special.

I'm having a meeting with Joce (ex Moyles now Surgery producer) on Wed to discuss future topics and any format tweaks.

Any requests?

Hey everyone - just seen this thread.Any requests?

I think you should zone in on bullying once more. When you did the anti-bullying campaign + the blue bracelet (which I still wear), I thought that was just a great initiative. Do it again, please. It's a subject which is never highlighted enough.

I once had a PSHE lesson in school where the guest person from Childline kept telling us how depression is a form of mental illness - Please don't do that - I don't think it helps!

I am so angry at this post. Not at the person posting, but for someone being so stupid to attend a school and say that. Depression can happen for a variety of reasons: it can be due to trauma, but there can also be physical causes, e.g. a chemical imbalance in the brain. The term "mental illness", I think should never be applied to depression.

Incidentally when I popped onto Aled.info today, I noticed you'd been banned. How did this happen? They seem like a pretty pleasant, mild mannered bunch on there.

Just to make it clear, when I was banned from moyles.net (I chose to be banned, btw... (my life has been happier since), I was told by Console that both the Boards would go, because of personality clashes between myself and another member. I had discussed it a week before, so was prepared. It was a good decision, I feel, and for the best. :-) And that is the last you will ever get out of me on the subject.

sad stuff tonight :( but listening intensively.

say aled why don't you get the forums involved with the surgery? email isn't used enough on the show and there's a lot of forums out there who talk about the show including yours. could they not be used. promotion for the forums and it will get more feedback for your show - more interactivity than just email and text? :)

the surgery is really depressing tonight!

I'm glad it's being tackled. Only flicking in and out, I fear I'll end up depressed if I listen too much!

Good idea. Might need a bit of moderating but Sunday nights is always ideal for that.

I feel for Aled this evening. This is an incredibly tough topic for him to deal with at the very beginning of his 3 month run. I think Joe from The Samaritans is an incredibly warm, understanding person. A fantastic figurehead for his charity.

The format already feels like it's reverted back to the Sunday Surgery in it's glory days. It doesn't feel as "stiff" as it has been recently.

I feel the Surgery sometimes lacks when they have the CBBC expert on. That's not a criticism towards him - I just think the show just becomes more simple. Perhaps they could brand it a regular show for pre-teens or something and the other shows could be a general show for all ages?

I Think Aled's doing really well tonight. Must admit, I'm not entirely surprised that Miss Osbourne has gone off for 3 months, she hardly seems to be at Radio 1!

Must be tough for Aled finishing the surgery at 12am and then having to be back for Moyles' show at 6.30am.

Aled generally does a later shift on breakfast unless Rachel is off.

Just a note to say that you did a fantastic job on the surgery tonight. With such a difficult topic, you handled it perfectly, having been in some of the situations you talked about on the show tonight i fully appreciate what you have done for other people and i would like to thank you for delivering a superb show which has helped me realise things and has helped other people too.

Thanks Aled :)

Thank you very much.

We were all very proud that so many people contacted us for help. Samaritans were there so we helped many many more people than you heard on air.

Working on a topic like that highlights how powerful The Surgery can be.

We have some other difficult issues coming soon including bullying.

Good for you. Make it happen.

This is an issue I've felt strongly about all my life, since school days, when my mate was bullied by 43 pupils approximately out of 2 classes totalling 60 pupils. Even supposing you don't do the "R1 rubber band" thing again, you've really got to push this anyway. :-)

    • Tara Kumar is in for Sian on Tuesday 4th June.
    • I think at least part of the problem is that a lot of Danny's act is based around Drag humour which (a) isn't for everybody (b) has to be so tamed down for daytime radio, it just becomes silly and (c) it is humour generally consumed on a night out with lots of alcohol taken!
    • Oh boy, if that's the case above then what are they trying to do at r1? If Danny was put into weekend afternoons that's one hell of a faux par and a big nail in the coffin. While ok, Nat and Vicky aren't about to blow the doors off and are only there as the fallout of d&v, but to then follow that up with Danny for 3 days a week. Come on. To go from a place where we had Katie followed by M&M to that. What happened to the prestigiousness of r1? Do they need reminding they've just lost Jordan? It's getting embarrassing. Like I said before, when I had people with 0 interest in radio whatsoever and it was in the background telling me to turn it off, you know it's bad. I saw a random friend from years ago even posting on fb with how has someone like Danny ended up on r1. Everywhere you turn its negative. Doesn't that multiply across the uk in what the r1 audience actually think of this presenter? I'm in the LGBTQ+ community and also r1 target audience but I don't feel I want to listen to this presenter because of that fact. Has some policy actually overtaken the true risk of driving audiences away? The fact is just how @coffeeandgin said, Danny has had chance since March with 2 shows a week and is still not up to the job. The odd podcast yes but certainly not to replace m&m! I've skipped through 10 minutes of this week to make sure I wasn't basing opinions on how it was before and yes it is the same level. When you had presenters like Scott who could keep it fresh despite how many years it had been, but then Danny sounds so out of date already, saying you could tune over to Rylan on r2... but then with a topic of "I want to know what have you missed out on?" I'm sorry?! What kind of local radio is that... it's meant to be radio 1 ffs. Terrible talking points, cringe, unfunny, and so bad on the radio it actually makes it jarring and makes people switch over.
    • I don’t think it will be September it will be a very messy schedule if that’s the case
    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
