Danny Beard's Radio 1 show

Isn't exactly the best look too when rather than using one of 'Christmas/New Year' intake or one of the better Friday Early Breakfast DJs as an interim that Aled's first thought is to throw in a celeb. I

Does seem to be the way though with the BBC though at the moment to bring in celebs as cover - it's been that way on Radio 2 for a while and now Radio 1 seems to be following a similar path so I wonder if it's driven too by those above Aled.

The longer the weekend afternoon slot remains unannounced the more you wonder if once again James Cusack will be overlooked for a permanent role when really he is the obvious choice.

Can't say I've listened too much to Danny so far so can't speak for how good or otherwise they are.

This might sound small, but hear me out. I think its fair to say regular radio 1 listeners know the whatsapp no matter if they use it or not. To hear danny say "03, 700, 100" and miss off third of the number and it happens constantly and after however many weeks now sounds stupid.

While we can get barked at for not listening to the in-house hospital radio service at least they know the number. When you put that with saying big weekend is in London, the ref of "cozie livs" like its nothing which was in such poor taste, the whole show is a major turn off and not a vibe. Even the brilliant playlist couldn't save it on Friday and we had to switch.

My prediction on this is a nice idea but one that hasn't worked and it won't reappear in the same way. Someone said there's an abba pod on sounds? That's probably the best place because their live shows are really bad.

Jamie Laing had the exact same issue even towards the end of his period being Mollie's maternity cover and he then walked straight into a drivetime role.

I'd hope for their sakes that both Danny and Jamie are trying to do similar to what Mollie did when she was first on Radio 1 and shadowing other shows on the network to give themselves the best chance of being the best they can be as DJs on Radio 1.

Danny has been speaking to the Mirror about his critics.

Undoutedly the show annoys the bigots who don't like them for what they are.

However, I simply don't like the show as it feels poor quality and out of sync with the sound of the station.

I think had Danny been booked as a one off or co-host for only a weekends worth of shows it would’ve been fine. I can see how Aled would want to book them to show commitment to supporting queer and non-binary talent from the queer community and culture scene. But over the years of take-overs there are many good talented LGBTQ+ in the radio industry.

Just want to politely remind that their pronouns are they/them.

Completely agree, so many good LGBTQ+ options that would be better. As another poster said, it's horrible people are hating on Danny for bigoted reasons, the simple fact is they aren't very good on the radio!

I really like Danny! Find him funny and good taste in music ❤️

Fair enough if you find Danny funny, but the music on the show isn't at all chosen by the presenter and would be the same whomever covered the slot.

I just wonder if they need a bit more of a mentor and someone to really sit down and critique the programme with them. I'd assume they'd be receptive to the feedback. Surely someone does that?

This. The show is poor quality and isn't getting any better. Danny feels very out of sync with anything at radio 1, including its own whatsapp number. That could maybe be forgiven if the show itself was good, but it's not. Dannys stories are cringe, the talking points are cringe and the refs to real world things are cringe. To think this used be katie's show, the quality level is through the floor.

It's nothing to do with what they stand for like was said in this article and its really wrong if people say things like that. BUT... yes danny might get a text from a SCOUSE builder who likes them, but hello danny is... scouse ffs. I don't buy into the fact most listeners are buying into this show like danny leans towards in the article, it's mission 'i need to save this'

They said I've been in the entertainment industry for 10 years and on gaydio (never heard them and I do dip in there) and I've a great cv. Well that's very nice, but what comes out of the speakers isn't entertaining, has been very out of touch, sometimes quite offensive and they're a poor quality presenter.

I'm one person and to be asked to turn it off by various people all target audience but 2 of them, across different weeks who aren't usually offended by us having the radio on speaks volumes.

Sorry but danny is definitely the novice they claim not to be and has lowered the quality

The show also feels like it doesn’t have many, if any, regular features. The previous occupants of that slot (Katie, Dean, Jordan) all had regular weekly features, whereas Danny just seems to be reading shoutouts and messages all show.

I think they will annoce this week who is doing afternoons on radio 1 breakfast  to up the interest as Jordan starts on capital next week

I wouldn't see the two as linked.

I ended up listening to quite a bit of Danny's show this morning on a long drive. I am trying to think of a positive but I can't... Seemed quite obvious to me that the show is being tech op'ed by a producer, not least the way the news jingle started playing and Danny seemed surprised, and in a way the fact that all Danny needs to do is speak at the right time makes it even less forgivable. Some quite basic errors at various points throughout which would be understandable from a novice on their first show, but really was poor (including messing up the WhatsApp number again).

I have no idea what Aled was thinking, it could be a bit more understandable if there were a couple of great features, but it's the most basic 'text in with comments on xyz' show. Can't quite decide whether Danny surpasses Maya as 'worst daytime DJ in R1 history'. Not sure I will listen any more though to help me decide.

Is Dannys idea to just slowly alienate groups of the audience until there's no one left? Out of date references, terrible talking points that are frankly dull and unentertaining, no clue about what happens on the rest of the station, getting band names wrong then managing to turn it into offence by saying "it was nothing but thieves, should know that being scouse" wtf?

I can't see any part of the audience that warms to Danny. With Jordan starting at capital and this show being on a Friday is this really what radio 1 need right now? I think you might be right above @Bluestraw , long surpassed Maya imo.

Some others have said it but James should have 100% gone into that show, I can only think they're putting him on weekend afternoons instead

The James Cusack situation is weird; came through at the same time as Dean McCullough, was arguably stronger than him, yet one is two years into a daytime stint and one is still getting a small amount of cover shifts. It’s a wonder Global haven’t swooped in here.

In all honesty didn’t mind her as much on the radio. I find she was more preferable on radio than television. I find she doesn’t quite fit the TV world and find most often when she is on television most viewers objectify her and is based on her looks rather than her as a presenter found she wasn’t too over bearing or in your face. I didn’t mind listening to her while completing my A-Level art work.

I do think some of Maya’s TV work is due to her looks which is back to the 70s mentality.

Yes, I do think on socia;l media theres that mentality still there. I do think on social media theres a bit of an on-line wolf whistle from when I see people talking about Maya. I think that there still is a thing in the TV where people who are seen as good looking are more likely to get jobs.

I personally do not mind him that much.  Wouldn't say I was a fan or anything but personally would rather listen to him than Dean and Vicky most days.  I was just shocked when I looked up his age as the way he talks and some of his references thought he would be a lot older than 31.

On the off chance I might have been too harsh and they've improved or been trained, I had a listen to the first 40 minutes of Dannys show today. I wasn't harsh enough.

I think there are people in the background laughing in sympathy because Danny said absolutely nothing funny, incorrect whatsapp number AGAIN, has no clue about the r1 music, completely off target topics literally waffling on about motivational speaking and talking all over jingles. Wtf is going on?

    • They seem to be using James more for cover now makes me think it will be him getting weekends eitjer breakfast or 1 till 4
    • Yep am very much Capital Breakfast now. Jordan, Chris and Sian are a great trio and it's got that feel of the old shows Jordan and Chris used to do on Radio 1. It doesn't take itself too seriously but is packed full of content and slick. With Greg he's great but 6 years in you've probably heard it all before plus frankly I can sit through the Capital Playlist a lot more easily than the Radio 1 playlist (where some of the inclusions and omissions can be quite baffling at times). Plus after things like the Oscars or Met Gala or if there's a particularly big TV show or film or popstar then Greg won't half wang on about it at times. I guess it's partly to be expected with it being a Breakfast show on a young station but it can feel very London bubble and get tired.
    • Ore Olukoga is in for Arielle on Tuesday 14th May. James Cusack is in for Danny Beard on Saturday 1st June. James Cusack is in for Nat on Sunday 2nd June.
    • I honestly never thought in a million years I’d move from Radio 1 to be a regular Capital breakfast show listener. But it’s got pretty much everything I want - 3 really genuine, entertaining mates having a laugh, playing silly games and it all sounds great. I became a big fan of Chris from his days with Scott, became a Jordan fan on Going Home, and Sian Welby is newer to me but is loads of fun too.  It’s great and I’ve shocked myself by transferring my listening at breakfast. For me Greg’s show now feels very tired and it’s time for something new. But with Jordan gone that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Greg’s had a great run and I’m a fan - but there’s no new ideas now. I still listen to Radio 1 at other times - but this show feels like very serious competition for Greg.
    • They have built four new studios to increase capacity, alongside the existing six.  Bearing in mind that some of the output of R1, 1X, R2 & 6M comes from elsewhere, and Asian Network is gradually moving all output to Birmingham, this should be enough!
    • How do they manage to cater for 6Music and Radio 2 on that floor? Did they adapt it?
    • I think we've all figured out now how much you like it @AndyK77 😂 Personally while I think it's by far the best show on the Capital schedule and better than its predecessor, it still has the shortened songs and other commercial-radio aspects that remind me why I'm a Radio 1 fan. No matter how well this has worked out for Jordan, and all credit to him for landing the job, I can't help but feel that a Jordan and Katie show on R1 breakfast would have been so much better!
    • A few weeks in and I am actually loving the show and Jordan is a nice mix of his old chaotic self and dare I say it a slick jock.
    • He must be in his element. At Eurovision and a Gold award!
    • I really like Rylan, and as much of a fun idea it would be to have Scott and Rylan together, I think Rylan is too much of a main character.  Scott needs a side-kick rather than a full on co-host I think. That’s why he and Chris worked so well, Scott steered the show, and Chris was the perfect person to have alongside him.    I don’t religiously listen to Rylan’s show, but when I do catch it, it’s perfect weekend energy. He has a very warm presenting style too, but something makes me think he and Scott together every day would be a bit too much.
    • So pleased for Scott on his best entertainment show win. As much as I miss his R1 style, he clearly puts so much into his shows, well deserved and it’s a big two fingers up to all the abuse he has had since joining R2
    • There are a lot that share your sentiments. People have made comparisons to the different takes to Ukraine.
    • It's a big 'No' from me (Israel-Palestine). No further comments.
    • A joke about pirates: ‘but we’re not jumping ship, like someone else’
    • I felt it was much better with the staging and everything.  I still cannot warm to his voice but he's a very good performer. Ireland was everything though.
