Capital Summertime Ball 2024

long time forum lurker & listener to scott mills & radio 1. i remember when chris was scotts friend on Tuesdays & Thursdays. 24 yrs at tap end the 1st time. & thought this was the best place to get questions from people more knowledgeable about radio than me

this news about jordan is huge. its made sense to me longer since i heard it. because Greg popularity & enthusiasm will keep him in that job for a while yet & even if jordan hypothetical started on monday he wouldve been the 3rd oldest breakfast show host in its history to start. but this what im interested in is how did Radio 1 get into such a mess where greg james will delighted by the news now because hes bulletproof, he is arguably the only star they have left. but by may 2026 i believe he overtake steve wright & become oldest DJ to host the R1 breakfast show.

but there is nobody that looks like the natural successor.

If greg does stay for a few years you cant have a someone starting a breakfast show at the age Chris Moyles left it. im probably wrong but ive heard that only 2 in right age bracket are dean & vicky. but rumour is there RAJAR listening figures arent great

is this bad planning by radio 1. have the youth radio station has forgotten to blood their youth is there a lack of talent on the way or just not given a change, why hasnt  recent winner or winners of student radio awards been on 4am slot like Greg, Scott & Chris moyles were

I must admit I've barely listened to the radio since Scott left. Pretty much exclusively Greg, with Sam and Danni occassionally who I admit are pretty good.

This is a big yikes for the BBC. In the last 5 years they've lost so much talent and not replaced them properly. The R1 'B team' were full of presenters you could listen to all day long. Now the star boy is heading out the door... it feels like a jenga tower where the last supporting piece has been taken out.

Don't think I'll be listening to Capital anytime soon though, the playlist is absolute cheeks. You would probably get fired for attempting to play an indie track over there.

To me the succession plan must be something along the lines....

 

Move Sam and Danni to daytime in the next year - either replacing RMC or Vick and Jamie which simply can't last.  Let them get a bit more experience then give them Breakfast.  With Jordan gone, they are the only viable plan unless they let Katie do it alone from Manchester.

Yes, think that Jordan North would ever it to happen could fit in right in to Radio X if years down the line he were to join that station. I think that eventually that potentially that the names that they could have to introduce is James Cusack, Lauren Layfield, Yinka Bokinni and Oré Olukoga as been used more than once for cover as of recently but think definitely there could be some couples split up and introduction of Maia Beth and Nels Hylton doing more music programmes. But, I feel that come this summer there maybe a shuffle of presenters being announced for the autumn and if there are presenters getting better offers and feel like not getting best deal maybe departures.

I know with the Radio 1 Relax stream being decommissioned they will also have to look at how they fill the hours overnight that the programming for that service filled on the schedule.

Am I lying though lol? One thing you can always say about R1 is that they don't go overboard with one genre. That said there was a period a couple of years back where every other song was grime or rap, thought I was listening to 1 Xtra by mistake.

I might end up finding myself just listening to the new music shows in the evening on BBC Sounds when Greg leaves. I thought I could follow Scott to R2 but realised I'm ride or die with R1.

I think if Katie was offered a big programme like breakfast or drive to be the Sara Cox to sweep in to fill any Simon Mayo and Jo Whiley like shoes with Jamie and Vick if it goes as listeners commented as a flop. I think that she deserves something otherwise I wouldn’t be surprised if she got bored of waiting and not being promoted and take a better offer. To me if the station is trying to steady itself and work on it’s own identity and trying to work on things think it might not be the best time to look to do the 00s and 10s service.

Is Relax really going? That's a real shame, it's fantastic when you're working or going for an early morning jog and need something calming to put on.

Is it weird I genuinely feel a bit sad today.

Jordan and whoever he was with or alone often made me feel happier with whatever was happening in my life/the world.  When you hear the tributes rightly paid to Steve Wright this week, you realise that's what broadcasting is all about.  Not saying Jordan is necessarily in Steve's class but he is certainly well above average and a huge loss.

 

When Scott left I think I only stayed with Radio 1 as I like Greg and loved Jordan... now I see no reason to stay especially as if Jordan is doing breakfast on Capital and I prefer him to Greg.

As target audience I honestly don't get what they see in Jamie. Simply put, he's not relatable, comes across as annoying and above everyone else and is very very Chelsea and posh London. A really bad choice for a national drive show.

At the end of the day, Jordan is a northern male that they've lost. Why not put in a presenter who is not only very good but also northern to plug that gap, not alienate more listeners.

Katie is great on weekends and has proved herself time and time again.

James Cusack has been excellent every time he's been on Radio 1. I've said before that he reminds me of the Jordan a few years ago, northern, down to earth, relatable, very charming and naturally funny with his chat. They definitely need to do more with these 2.

Oddly, I think that might be the place where it could keep some of its older listeners whilst keeping bringing new ones in it’s a slightly more mainstream 6 Music in terms of programming. I as a listener would be interested to hear what Jack Saunders sounds like full time with Future Sounds and the stuff tributing Annie Nightingale reminded me how good the stations specialist programming is Indie Show, Benji B, Future Soul and Future Pop even is very good. And is where presenters tend to last longer and build audiences and hope that more overnight stuff eventually goes back of having that more specialist stuff as that would bring me back to the station.

Not posted here today but I am genuinely a little bit stunned by this news.

Jordan has been a firm favourite of mine since he started covering shows & was delighted when he got the bump up to “Going Home”. Wasn’t sold on the Vick partnership to begin with (and I think I do personally prefer the dynamic with Katie) but the show has turned into a solid 2 hours and 15 minutes every single day! It’s got a great pace, with plenty of features & 2/3 people with great humour.

It’s a sad day, because as much as I now like Vick - I just didn’t enjoy Jamie when he covered with Matt last year. So I don’t think I’ll regularly catch the new show (I’ll give it a go out of curiosity, as surely they’ll want to reboot “Going Home” to some degree?).

There are only a handful of people I’ve felt genuinely gutted about leaving Radio 1: Scott & Chris, Alice Levine & now Jordan!

Although he has been on the station for some years atleast regularly since 2016 still felt he was getting started but hope that he continues to have a place if it is capital he can show his potential. With Steve Wright he had the perfect amount of time to have a crack at showing how he does it and what it is to make an impact on radio and on listeners. 

I preferred Greg on drive to Breakfast had it if I tune into Saturday Live podcast his presenting stint I probably enjoy hearing him on that but think sometimes certain times and shows due to our personal preferences we prefer a presenter doing it.

Jack is fantastic with new music. He makes it feel like a cool club that only a few people are in on. Annie Mac had the same gift, probably why she ended up working on 6.

Annie Mac in the evenings. Dev, Alice, Jordan, Matt & laterly Mollie on the weekends. We didn’t realise how good we had it until it’s now gone.

Also note on socials etc it is almost nobody that is delighting in Jordan leaving.  That's always a good barometer. 

 

Still I am delighted for Jordan if he is getting a huge paycheque for this move - broadcasting is a fickle professional - make the dough when you can.

Yes seems very odd to me esp as Jordan did Christmas Day breakfast he worked so hard to get a big show on there all I can say is  if rummors are true pcapital must have offered him some contract to make him leave

Also he was one of the ones that do something that is hard to do make the mundane entertaining he has quite a charming and amusing delivery. I can’t imagine many presenters making ‘’picky teas’ or what you having for your tea, something so basic quite amusing that listeners interact with and the listeners really managed to convince and prove to him that this is good radio that they enjoy. He has that mates in the pub casual conversation that made it work and it’s all how you talk to a listener and he has many good stories to tell them. Really liked the stories he had to tell when he was on sunday mid mornings.

Have they stopped the comments on the Instagram post? Doesn’t seem to be any recent ones. I presume the other presenters have been asked not to make their own grid or story posts about Jordan?

I guess the Capital move will significantly increase his pay. He nor Vick made it onto the higher earners list & I can imagine Capital have the cash to go wayyyyy up on where he might be right now. 
Is it worth the money/profile for the next few years? Or is the better long game to stay at the BBC and end up over on Radio 2, like Scott?

They were both great, and to be honest the whole mid to late 2010s lineup of djs was excellent.

I remember when Scott left and there was a shakeup of the schedule, I said at the time it felt very slapdash and some promotions felt like they were too soon. Looking back I think that was just because the roster had slowly weakened over time. The drive to recruit celebrity presenters has been a disaster and might have blocked the progression of others. No sign of that stopping now with Jamie Laing getting the nod for drivetime...

Now I won't be all doom and gloom. I think this news means Greg won't be going anywhere for a while. He loves Radio 1 too much to be seen as abandoning the ship, leaving it in worse shape than it was when he joined. Sam and Danni are also excellent and need to be given a prime slot as soon as possible.

You can still comment. But possibly that comments have died down or sometimes filtered out as when there are platitudes of comments it’s harder to find the newer ones. I think it would be the right call inevitably the commercial radio sector is something that is a growing market and Global through marketing and lucrative advertising and sponsorship deals are ensure that a healthy revenue is coming to the company and expect it to expand more into podcasting and other media to the success of LBC and other popular brands that it owns. With the BBC it’s in a bit of a troubling and uncertain time for the corporation where things are expected to get austere as already have to BBC local and its newsroom services. Richard Osman on his Rest Is Entertainment has described the broadcaster as effectively skint and its’s that that baffled me with the announcements about the radio services proposed for DAB+. I thought there literally had no money to create more stations.

I think for some the unclear foggy direction where it’s unclear what BBC are going to cut and spend next and only a month or two go there was an article in the i newspaper circling around that any changes to the liscense fee and the organisations funding radio could be the first to go. I think right now the long game is less of an issue for presenters.
