Next Radio 1 Breakfast presenters

Vick left the other biggest breakfast show in the country due to her mental health so she may not want to do it. She’d also be the first person ever to both present Capital Breakfast and compete with it. Don’t know how likely that situation would be.

Jordan and Katie I could see happening and it would be nicer than Jordan solo as Breakfast hasn’t had female or been in a zoo format in a long time.

Although the way it’s been going, I doubt it’ll be Jordan at all. They seem to like giving it straight to new people rather than promoting anyone.

It’ll probably be given to someone new when Greg leaves unless management at Radio 1 changes.

Hasn't it been presenters who have worked their way up the ranks since Moyles? Quite a few other breakfast presenters were well established at Radio 1 already as well.

Moyles, Grimmy and Greg were all at R1 a while before they gained breakfast and like Jordan, had done several slots before getting it (Chris and Greg were both promoted from drive time as well...) I definitely think Jordan is destined for the breakfast show. Of course they may try and go a different path, but I doubt it. That said... I hope Greg is on breakfast for a while longer.

Yes it has been that way for a long time and Moyles, Grimmy and Greg all worked their way up. What I'm saying is that promotion used to be the norm but now the norm is becoming to throw someone new on immediately. Hence why I think it won't be Jordan

Ah, apologies. I understand what you mean now. Although, I do think breakfast is the exception to the rule. Imo, with Radio 1 breakfast you do need someone who is familiar to the Radio 1 audience and it does feel like (to me anyway) that they are building Jordan up to become their next 'star name'. Whether that will be alone, with Vick or Katie remains to be seen.

When you say they seem to like giving it to new people

What do you mean and what are you referring too?

I do wonder if Vick has been put on Drivetime because she was promised “something more” when she was bought in for the Life Hacks slot. I could see the same sort of promise with RMC really.

But timings just meant that Drive came up first… as I think you could use the same talent in a much better way on daytimes: Greg, Vick, RMC, Jordan & Katie.

Vick would sound much better solo-ing the Live Lounge, with RMC taking on more of a Scott & Chris style (plus they could’ve stayed there a while as it’s a good non-peak slot for older DJs).

In terms of next Breakfast, Jordan has got to be a shoe in, presumably with Katie because of Vick’s very strong objections. But if so, I don’t know why they haven’t shuffled them together on Drive already.

A swap between RMC and Vick and Jordan makes sense with Jordan eventually finding his own show.

I mean giving high profile slots to people that haven't been promoted from anywhere else on the schedule. For example, Dean and Vicky, Dean had only held one permanent slot and Vicky wasn't on the station's schedule. Nat O'Leary getting Sundays after one round of Early Breakfast, Sian and Gemma getting their shows after only covering them once as well. Charlie Tee replacing Renee LeVice is also a good example, she hadn't done much before that.

Jordan is the next Breakfast host with Vick or Katie or both? Aled obviously wants Zoo format back so why not all 3? As for when? I fear this could be Gregs final year at the station? I do hope im wrong though.

I think with the strategy Aled has taken to have more partnered and co-host style and return to a ‘zoo format’ maybe in the long run as the BBC continues to be under great pressure to find areas to cut and find ways of closing certain job posts. Think at one stage not his own call and interest but from powers above that there may need to be at the next schedule shake-up cuts in presenter numbers and the amount of duos and trios.

I can see Rickie and Melvin being in the amongst the names that maybe out of the door of the station like Matt Edmonson & Mollie King. Though even with some good reviews I dont see where there will be room for Jamie Leng on the schedule.

But if Rickie & Melvin did leave would think moving Dean & Vicky to drive and have Vick Hope to take mid mornings and Jordan North afternoons.

At time I would thought a trio maybe good for breakfast. But with breakfast on the BBC it works best with at most two figures max.

I mean I can see a time when Aled steps down and gets poached somewhere else to manage with the popularity of his focus on different programming like anthems, dance and relax on the station and building on air partnerships and championing new presenting talent.

Do think that maybe Ben Cooper as someone who works at Bauer these days should maybe help lure Aled to head up Bauer’s Hits Radio and maybe Kiss included. He has had some ideas that have worked well. But, feel that he’s much achieved his change and taste of the station and gived it a different image before he started and that can tell for stations like Hits Radio who are trying to attract the wedge between Radio 1 and Radio 2 he has the eyes to make it work and feel its that there’s different ideas need to be on the table.

I kind of think the genre specific and more late night specialist programming doesn’t need much prior experience of working on the station e.g Jack Saunders before getting 4 nights a week with the Indie Show and Rene didn’t do much on the station before he started.

I think it’s safe to say Matt won’t be the next permanent breakfast presenter possibly an extended interim at most if Greg leaves suddenly. He didn’t replace Scott and Chris because Matt is probably on his way out and also questions would quite rightly be asked about R1 or 2 being too similar

I agree but also they wanted the afternoon show from Manchester which probably played a factor in why Dean and Vicky got the show ahead of more likely candidates.

That's honestly probably true, it does seem you can be a lot more new or unknown for specialist shows. I recently remembered how Sian only got on the station as a Christmas presenter and then ended up replacing Phil as the main presenter of Chillest not long after. Same with Gemma and Introducing. Its probably happened before, like you said evening or specialist shows have more change. Tho bear in mind with Jack while he was new to R1 he had come straight from  a daytime show on Radio X and has a student radio background which is something that has been important before with Greg etc. Its weird to think that in the space of 2018-2020 R1 poached multiple presenters from either somewhat high profile or very high profile commercial competitors, which is iirc when Ben Cooper was still in charge of the station as a whole but Aled was head of programmes because they're not doing that much. Now it feels all about new talent with the likes of your Dean, Vicky, Nat where there are some very new people being put on weekday and weekend daytime.

Jordan & Katie feels the obvious option they'll go with. Since it's been nearly 20 years without a female host at Breakfast I can see them feeling now is the time to have a woman on Breakfast again. Add to it that Jordan very much feels like the breakfast DJ in waiting and regularly presents with either Vick or Katie & that Vick has repeatedly mentioned not wanting to present Breakfast full-time and it feels the sensible choice. Helps too that Jordan & Katie sound great together on air but also have done plenty of radio solo too over the years.

Do wonder too if it were Jordan & Katie if the Breakfast show might move to Salford - Katie already does her weekend shows from there and Jordan does always talk about his Burnley/North West roots. It'd be a real statement for the BBC too with one of their flagship radio shows coming from outside of London (since they made a point a while back of wanting radio spread across the UK).

I can see a Breakfast Show from Salford being very possible but in the next time they have a major shift changes wonder if they would ever consider having a show from cities like Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow at different BBC buildings

What if the next Breakfast host is just Katie Thistleton

I guess that is a possibility - though Aled does some to be a fan of pairing presenters together (Dev & Alice and Matt & Mollie when he was head of Programes and then as head of Radio 1 Dean & Vicky and Vick & Jordan).

It all depends too when exactly Greg does depart - if Jordan's had at least a 2 year stint on Drive by then, he may be more likely to make the move to Breakfast.

I think eventually the reign of duos and presenter couplings is going to have to cease and fade out with costing cuts and pressure to make savings will make had to justify quantity of such numbers
