Aled’s New Lineup - 3 months in

Now there have been a couple months to bed in, what do we all think of Aled’s new Radio 1 lineup?

Personally I think weekdays have bedded in really well, with no weak links making it the strongest daytime lineup in years. Greg and Scott sound fresh as ever, reinvigorated even, RMC have adapted to daytime and haven’t been overbearing on the slot, playing plenty of music and keeping it low-key, and Vick and Jordan have become a really strong and natural sounding pairing, easily potential Radio 1 Breakfast material down the line and a very enjoyable listen at drive, plenty of personality. I think Clara had found her natural home on Future Sounds, vastly prefer it to her morning show which never worked for me, and Jack is rapidly becoming a star of evening Radio 1. Power Down is great at the end of the day too! Although I do lament the fact they’ve killed off the evening live programming and basically put it all on tape from 10pm onwards; personally i’d see away Early Breakfast before I cut away live post-10PM programming.

Weekends are also very enjoyable at the moment, Adele always a consummate professional, and Matt and Mollie back on afternoons sounding the strongest they ever have IMO: I was very critical for a time but they’ve grown on me. Dean jarred a little at first, but he clearly gets Radio 1, and more and more his show is sounding top notch, he clearly has a future on the station, and it really underscores what a waste having someone who was such a weak link (Maya Jama) on that primetime weekend slot was.

What are everyone’s thoughts? I’m no uncritical cheerleader, and nothing is without fault (in the past I’ve had some very strong critique of the lineup, and the Friday-Weekend thing annoys me still), but for me this current lineup sound just about right for the times, and hopefully it gets a year or two with no more changes where it can really settle in!

Pretty much in agreement with you on all of those points. Dean has settled in well since I last passed comment a few weeks after the changes.

I can't see anymore changes on Aled's part till part way into 2023 at least. Weekends lost several strong presenters, but a year on and it's still just as good. Some may disagree but, after a year of rotating Friday early breakfast, I personally think they should appoint a permanent set of presenters (cover for early breakfast still rotating). I'd chose Sam & Danni for this who have cropped up a fair bit in the past year covering various slots.

Sam and Danni very under mentioned - I think they have potential and fully agree on giving them Friday Early Breakfast - or at least a regular role covering for shows, maybe covering the weekend shows (that’s how Jordan started).  I hope you’re right on no changes - I think it needs time to bed in as I say, and I’d hate to see a big name leave to be replaced with a weaker link, hence weakening the whole schedule.  Right now it seems to be all strong, across the board - a first in my time as a Radio 1 listener.

First of all, I think that Greg and Scott are still very strong in their current slots, if anything their shows feels even stronger since the schedule changes.

Vick and Jordan are also sounding really good, they work well together and seem to get along, even outside radio they could easily work well together on TV.

Rickie, Melvin and Charlie are good, but it still feels like a waste having them together and then really small links, not much chat and very few games. I'd make their show a little bit more entertainment-focused like the other shows in the schedule because it does stick out at the moment.

Dean is sounding good as well, as is Arielle. I'd argue that the latter is perhaps too good for the Early Breakfast slots, and perhaps her and Dean are in the wrong slots, but there's no way that change would ever happen.

Matt and Mollie's show has also been really enjoyable, their dynamic is great and I hope they stay for a long time to come. Adele is always a good listen but I still do wonder what her long term future with the station is, especially when Katie has been passed up every time there's an opening. She's been on once a week for four years now, although it is good to see her doing more cover slots.

I do enjoy Clara on Future Sounds, I don't listen often but when I do she is good enough. Danny is quite a good listen too, his music choice is quite good and I've noticed a bit more of it ending up in the daytime playlist. Future Artists and Indie Show still isn't working for me at 8pm, they should either vary the music genre a bit more like they do in Future Sounds or move it later - the Indie Show definitely shouldn't be in that slot.

The Powerdown Playlist works at 10pm no doubt, but it is a bit of a copout not to be live. I'd maybe do The Chillest Show live in that slot instead of the pre-record, but it is the same sort of concept. Not sure it entirely works going from loud indie music -> chill -> dance.

Whilst I don't see any schedule changes for at least the next year or so, I would in the future like to see a late night live show on Radio 1, maybe in a similar fashion to the mid-morning show of a little bit of chat and chill, maybe in the 12am slot. A perfect presenter for this would be Adele Roberts, in my opinion, but someone new like Vicky Hawkesworth would also work.

It's also becoming more and more apparent as to who the cover presenters are on the station. It seems like James Cusack, Vicky Hawkesworth, Jess Iszatt and Sam & Danni are the part time ones, with Katie and Sian stepping in regularly where necessary. In that respect, and considering only maybe one or two slots will open up in the next few years, I'm not sure I'd continue to do the Christmas presenter thing, or the Friday Early Breakfast slot. Over Christmas, they could've easily done those 6 presenters that I mentioned above (Katie -> Vicky -> James -> Sam & Danni -> Sian -> Jess) each day over Christmas and it would work quite well in my opinion.

If they're going to continue to use the Friday Early Breakfast slot, there is no point giving it to presenters like Alex who did it last month and hosts quite a good slot for KISS, and Jess who has already proven herself to be a regular cover presenter for the specialist shows. I'd give the slot to Arielle from next year again, with them dropping Best New Pop (they do New Music Friday around 5.30am on Fridays anyway).

I’d keep the new presenter spotlight Christmas special but do it with more piloted specialist music and entertainment comedy ideas. I’d potentially maybe have some listener curated or polled bits that inform the Christmas limbo gap with some future focused content of music and culture. I like the blend that having something of Future Artists can deliver but early but doing at 8 is an odd one. think something like Power Down should be post midnight or maybe just scrapped from daytime and embedded into Sunday with scrapping Anthems on Sunday morn. Can’t comment on Greg’s show don’t listen. Only thing I’ll say about Scott show id dump golden moments when they do additional golden podcast drop on Friday and maybe have presenters dropping in on features swap brother or lover.

id keep Best New Pop Just extend it for an hour

  • 3 weeks later...

I do think Jordan and Vick are the best new team on the airwaves. As someone who can’t sleep at night. They need to put out a better output from 9PM onwards. After Sian goes off air there’s nothing good on. They could do with putting a late night show on for an adult audience (like the 8th, or RMC)

I haven’t listened to much R1 lately. Aside from Scott, Greg, Jordan and Vick.

The new lineup is fine. I don’t think RMC are that great in their new slot. But that’s just personal  opinion

I like Benji B’s radio show but feel that Benji’s, Rene’s and Annie Nightingale are proper radio programmes that are designed for the specialist listeners on radio sounds. I find they are capable decent safe choices for Rickie, Melvin and Charlie but when could be listening to Matt Chorley on Times Radio or Mary Anne Hobbs on 6 Music I’d most likely to choose them or playlist podcast or catching up on future soul than the RMC show. I do find RMC give overkill of voices that time of day. Not convinced on Clara Amfo on Future Sounds from listening. I find that theres too many playlists come after 01:00-05:00 when could have more specialist and live soft Entertainment think i do miss having a show like Huw Stephen’s and Jack Saunders in 22:00-01:00 i used to like bit of cross genre blend of music at that time. I do hope that Huw Stephens gets a show on 6 Music permanently in new year excellent covering for Lamo this week.

I agree. The late night specialist stuff is good. I don’t like the heavy hip hop focused stuff after dark. I’d be happier if we just get more varied playlists- maybe a few sweary songs mixed in with the rest of the playlist.

I kind of agree i fine beat out of the later showe is Benji B. I did fine the thing when it had RMC and Charlie Sloth doing right later evening show was that a exclusive hip hop sound. As what liked before when had showe like Huw and Phil and Alice oh those later slots you get hip hop rap and grime sounds but with the sounds of indie rock, more experimental pop and electronic pop. I find Jack Saunders is as cable as Annie, Zane and Phil doing this but 22:00-05:00 in morning lacks the variation. I mean it’s like radio 1 has got the resources, money and talent to bring that diverse and eclectic playlist back

As we head into 2022, just my few thoughts on the new line up. In short: it's fantastic. I don't think there have ever been more shows on Radio 1 that I actively want to listen/catch-up with.

Vick & Jordan are really growing into the drive slot. Sadly it just shows how poor Grimmy's show was when you compare just how much speech/content/fun they manage to squeeze into the show. There's plenty of different weekly features, they've got the daily staple in the 'Something Songs' & the 'talkers' always feel quite natural and generate some good stories. Basically they move the show on every 15/30 minutes & the hard work of the production team really does shine through. It's a shame it doesn't have a Scott Mills Daily style podcast to make catching up easier.

I'm growing to like the pairing even more - sometimes I do feel Vick's humour doesn't quite work with Jordan. She kind of stunts his jokes and the way he plays up the whole Northern thing (but I guess I am comparing this to Jordan's podcast with William Hanson who just knows when to sit back and let Jordan be the fool). Katie is great cover too, she works with both Vick & Jordan so should keep the show sounding consistent all year round.

RMC: I like them. I really enjoyed the evening show they did, because it was a little bit naughty & had plenty of games, even if the music wasn't always to my taste. Personally, it does feel like they've not translated this very well across to the new slot. I loved night night nonsense (a different game every Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday where Rickie/Melvin/Charlie each host one night and the other 2 play), if they did something similar (midday madness? 😂) it would really lift the whole show in my opinion. The daily features they have started aren't that strong: Random annoys me, Skive lounge is fun but maybe not as often & Melvin's Live Lounge guessing game just sticks out (why are they only doing it 1 day a week when they do LL rewinds every morning?).

It just feels like they have been pinched a bit too much on talk time & when there is 3 of them on the show it feels a bit of a waste of talent. Of course it shouldn't be as fast paced/packed as Breakfast or Drive, but I think Scott & Chris show that the 'content filled' shows do work outside of peak. My biggest wish for 2022 is that they can inject a bit more fun into this show. Shout outs are fine till 11, then the Live Lounge, but some different good features every half hour after that would be great.

Greg James and Scott & Chris deliver the 2 most consistently great shows on radio anywhere in the UK, in my opinion. Obviously not too much to say here because they weren't new for September 2022, but they have certainly kept up their game alongside the new additions to the line up. I hope neither change for a good while to come. Reinstating Greg on a Friday was probably one of the best decisions of the year. My one niggle with Breakfast is that I wish they made more of the 9:30 till 10:30 slot. I miss the daily madness of the 6:30 till 7am bit.

Evenings - I don't listen to them as regularly (I used to catchup with RMC) but whenever I have heard Clara, Jack & Sian, it really does feel like they are in the perfect places on the schedule. They each love the slot they do & it shows. Just a shame we have lost an entertainment based evening show. Even if it was 10-12, so it could be naughty again with Powerdown at 12am.

Weekends - Adele is a pro and very much suits the weekend Breakfast slot. It doesn't need to be as fast paced as weekdays & I think the past few years of having the 2 different duos on then just shows what a waste it can be, especially on a quiet morning like Sunday. I'm still not 100% sold on Dean, he is good but I did prefer Jordan in that slot. As has been mentioned here before, I wonder if it's too much too soon. Should he be on Early Breakfast with Arielle at the weekends? My personal choice would've been RMC on a Friday, Dean on a Sunday & someone new on a Saturday - gives a slot to another ex-Xmas/Friday EB presenter too. (I'd pick Sam & Danni. Saturday, so they are still free to cover life hacks on a Sunday).

Matt & Mollie are sounding the best they ever have. The move back to weekends really did 'reset' their show and the stuff they do is on a par with the duos on Monday to Thursday. Some really great games and the 'talkers' they do are also generating some of the funniest stories too. Again, it's a shame they don't have a podcast. They could probably get away with a pretty beefy weekly one?

I think it's one of the best possible versions with the DJs available. Have some minor complaints, but Aled did a great job after all.

Arielle: I like her a lot, especially her energy and her accent. They hopefully won't forget about her when a better weekday slot opens up.

Greg: I still miss Chris Smith, but as someone who've always hated breakfast show as a genre, I love Greg's. It's not perfect but I always switch off happier than I tuned in, that's a really big deal.

RMC: Now... I'm sorry but they remind me of an awful commercial breakfast show. It's like they's have a time limit on the links, always in a rush to play the next song and laughing on top of each others lines. They just don't fit on R1, at least not as a trio (when one of them was absent the show got a bit better). At least the music is not monotone and boring like it was on the nighttime show. Melvin is cool tho. ;)

Scott: We can just take him for granted at this point, because he's leaving R1 next year since 2012, but still, here we are. :)Okay, nothing lasts forever, but as long as they're sounding this strong with Chris (this morning's "surprise" show was fantastic for example), I'll still be listening for the next 1/2/5/10/20 years. Even when Scott leaves the afternoon slot (probably around 2112 :) ), I hope he stays on the chart show or get a naughty late night slot.

Vick & Jordan: My first thought was that it's a waste pairing them together, because they're the best two of the new generation presenters, and two great shows are better that just one. After I heard the first show I've changed my mind, this was a brilliant move, they sound amazing together.

Clara: Kinda indifferent on her, love her voice, but nothing special. Wasn't listening that much. Not her fault, but I think the hottest record "rebrand" was a mistake. At least it's not a separate 5 minute show on sounds, but on air it sounds like it was and I don't like it.

Jack: Now this is how a specialist show should sound like. And it's on at a time when average human beings are still awake. Perfection.

Powerdown Playlist: If only it was live... or at least fake live... if only...

René/Annie/Benji: I'm just glad they're still on. Shows like this are what used to make R1 nighttime special, not lazy mixes recorded for repeating.

Adele: Weekend mornings are the shows that suit her the best imho, but I don't hear her that much to form an opinion.

Dean: The first impression was really bad, "be happy right now or else" vibes, so I avoided him for months. I gave him another chance in early December, but this he was actually fun and sounded professional. My favourite thing from him was the birthday hour for the poor folks (like myself :)) who celebrate their birthday around Christmas time. Maybe he deserved all three weekend shows after all.

Matt & Mollie: They're still okay, I guess. :) Not really listening nowadays. I still prefer solo Matt though.

Dance Anthems: I wouldn't really mind Charlie, but throwing out the future hour for another classic one is such a sin from a new music station in my book, that I haven't listened once since M.I.S.T.A.J.A.M (that's how he spells it, right? :D) left.

Anthems in general: (Rant alert!) Play songs in full! Whoever mixes them, clearly can't mix at all, so why bother. If i like a song, and it cuts off halfway through, I just switch off the radio and put on the full song. Also repeat less! Yes, Starlight, Flowers, 21 Seconds, Gotta Get Thru This and such are all classics, but maybe the last 2 decades have many many more brilliant but forgotten songs that deserved to be on anthems instead of yet another play of these.

Everyone else: Nothing specific, maybe I'll edit this if I have something new to say.

Bonus: The 10:30-1-15:30-6-8 schedule: I'm kinda fine with it now, my only complaints are that it's still inconsistent with weekends and weekday shows feel shorter than they actually are, especially drive, so I still prefer the good old 10-1-4-7.

(That's it for now, I'm back with another overly long post with broken english in another ~6 months. :)

I’m not one for breakfast shows in mornings I’d either would Times Radio Matt Chorley occasionally very rare Stig & Asmah. I like the way Lauren Laverne does breakfast very lowkey and not over the top as it can be a poisoned challace. I like radio that feels more unique and not purposely populist and that doesn’t feel disposable that works around the moment that the show is on and that wouldn’t fit with repeats or leasurly listening.

if it was me I’d chuck out Classic Anthems, and any type of anthems. Arguably Danny Howard did more preferable features i liked the remix or the future dance track and the new dance tracks that would make the show rather than oldies that it has become to Heart Dance than Radio 1 Dance.

I like the woman who was covering Clara Amfo last week but in my opinion Clara Amfo hasn’t comfortably lead the show as a music specialist broadcaster with the authority of the know how and the skill it needs feels to passive than Annie Macmanus and Zane Lowe’s day think maybe specialist shows need more edge and more interviews or listening key for music fans that drag an audience of more aggressive music fans.

I like Jack Saunders he reminds me of the energy and excitability energy that specialist music broadcasting is about a really strong broadcaster do miss having a diverse multi genre live show overnight like Midnight Drop features. Maybe they could drop overnight playlists that don’t feature non-presenter generic mixes as too commercial. New specialist shows needed.

I feel Powerdown playlist could be either apart of a overnight specialist show or back to being embedded into the scheduled. I think on Sunday having powerdown playlists in the daytime schedule. Not always keen on fake live broadcasting anyway. I do feel that 22:00 it would be good if can interact with audience tho know sometimes will have some pre-recorded programming

Some of the Radio 1 Relax programming is good but I would scrap the whole stream feed and radio 1 dance. I think maybe some minor redesign of BBC Sounds to promote Future, Relax and Dance shows in such easy to sort categories with cross promoting related content across Radio 1 and 1 Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 6. As it seems like the feeds do takeaway from the bespoke BBC specialist music broadcasting.

I wouldn't say get rid of "Anthems" entirely. There is a scope to hear older tracks on occasion (although I wish they were played into the system individually so we could hear them in full instead of being butchered up, cut short and mixed). I'd get rid of the Friday slot tbf, Saturday and Sunday would be adequate, and let Greg do something with the last half hour at the end of the week.

Although it sounds a bit jarring at 3pm... Party Anthems (dunno why they renamed it from Dance Anthems) does have a place as it's not just a generic anthems show. It's always showcased the more mainstream side of dance that does deserve airplay that don't fit in with what Sarah Story and Pete Tong plays. It did suit better at 6pm after Newsbeat on a Friday though... As it bridged the gap between daytime and the specialist Friday night dance stuff. Dance Anthems worked well under the format created when Mistajam hosted, An hour of classics, an hour or current, and the last hour showcasing future artists and dance music.

Dance Anthems worked well under the format created when Mistajam hosted, An hour of classics, an hour or current, and the last hour showcasing future artists and dance music.

I think maybe if could create a once a week request show or feature. I would definately since Radio 1 isnt a nostalgia driven station get rid as its a rebrand of the shows that went out on weekend surronding radio 1’s 50th birthday. I do feel that having a Friday saturday driven playlist of having upbeat energetic dance, pop, rap and rock new and old for that feeling such things better subtle i find.

Sunday think a subtle chilled playlist new and old woven in would be more preferable with music based features that link in. With the more mainstream dance i think maybe ensure that there is rotation of tracks on playlist i do think unless if got more newer tracks to champion try to switch some out on the long playlist when new verity enters or extending the playlist numbers.

I mean no issue really when MistaJam did it but think that style and format of dance anthems is now missing the bespoke elements of new and cutting edge dance or offering a taster of the network of dance shows that it should
