Agreed, I was to young to hear him and whilst I heard him for minutes at a time previously his programme didn’t appeal to me but as you said cant deny his impact and respect what had achieved over his radio career@DC

I assume Sara must have broken the news. Have Radio 1 even given it a mention. Tbh I hope they do, it's just plain wrong if they don't if I'm truthful.

yes Jordan mentioned Steve Wright a little earlier in the show.

Fair enough. Wasn't my era for radio 1 as I said but DJ's like Steve wright were superstars back then. Imagine tik tok stars nowdays but amplify it by about 10.

Yeah even if he wasn't your exact preference its just sad anyway

And had a big impact especially with brining zoo format to the UK in the 80s

Yes, which influenced an era of British radio and many successful shows someone that imagine Scott Mills, Chris Moyles, Chris Evans and many others seemed to have been influenced by that style brought something that really worked over decades.

He bought the Zoo format to the UK really. Which later went on to be used by Chris Moyles a lot for his Radio 1 show. He was a gamechanger

Oh no doubt the ones who deny the world exists past 1990 will use it as an excuse to have a go at Scott. Talking of whom, has posted a very warming tribute on social media. I imagine he's upset as are the rest of the Radio 2 DJ's. Steve wasn't just a radio legend, they worked with him day to day.

Much enjoyed Scott on R1 - But sounds all wrong on R2, especially in light of who he replaced.

I miss the features, but the music is better. I don't miss hearing Stormzy and Dave all the time tbh. So kind of balances back out for me.

I’m of the age that I quite like Dave & Stormzy. I find it seems like theres too much of the 90s and 00s played so much pop on the station for me to listen.

Even Dave and Stormzy seem old music to me, DC 🤣

It's all this drill "I'll stab ya nan if you say hello to me" type stuff I can't put up with. Was creeping into the playlists heavily in Scott's final years on Radio 1. Some of the dance stuff they play is OK nowdays though.

The 90s (95ish upwards) and 00s radio 2 play I don't mind tbh. That's their job nowdays though as Roy Keane would say. Scott played a lot of that and lived through those eras when they were all new, makes sense he does it now on Radio 2 for the audience that's moved over there.

Sadly though. Lewis Capaldi's depressing durge is on both stations, can't get away from that anywhere.

Greg James opening with Steve’s jingle this morning, very fitting.

And a joke about loving the show, haha.

So sad to lose Annie and Steve in such a small amount of time.

What is clear is the admiration that the current generation of Radio 1 DJs had for him as well as his Radio 2 colleagues and other presenters across the industry. Dean just gave a nice little tribute at the start of the show.

The 'Non Stop Oldies' is returning this afternoon during Scott's show (I assume at 3pm like it used to be) in tribute to Steve Wright.

    • I’m sure at one point it was OutKast and Hey Ya that kicked in on the emergency tape. But this was many years ago, possibly Chris Moyles era.
    • It was used a few months ago when there was a fire alarm during RMC’s show. Can’t remember what songs were played tho.
    • Hello. I am wondering if anyone knows the playlist for the current Emergency Tape on Radio 1, thanks in advance.
    • Yep while I can see the point said poster was making I guess the argument is if R1 make celeb hires you're just aping what commerical stations are doing then and it weakens the argument for what makes R1 unique from the commercial sector when future discussions about the BBC and BBC radio come up.  Commercial stations I get more as they have ratings/RAJAR pressure but while there's still that pressure to an extent for Radio 1 should it really be what you're chasing above all else?  In this situation at least the spells Jamie and his wife and GK Barry are limited but it makes you wonder will it stay that way? I think that's the concern more than anything - you don't want the floodgates to open and a future Greg James or Scott Mills to lose out as a result.  But then again Mollie King was probably a bit of a celeb hire and she's now as good as any DJ on Radio 1. But for every Mollie King, there's a Kelly Osbourne on The Sunday Surgery (whoooo) or a Maya Jama, Jameela Jamil.
    • Going Home often gets the attention but that Group Chat show seems to really struggle for a consistent line-up week to week at the moment - particularly on a Friday. Lauren (Redfern) seems to be on there just as much as if Vicky and Nat these days and Ore isn't far behind either.
    • Sara Cox mentioned on Monday's breakfast show she's doing a week in August so it sounds like she's covering Scott's next full week off (hopefully OJ is on drive then). I think he's sitting in for Scott on the August bank holiday though based off what he said the last time he did the show.
    • I think OJ will be saved for covering Breakfast since he’s done a few on odd bank holidays
    • W/C 23rd June Tina Daheley in for Jeremy Emma Willis in for Sara Gary Davies in for Spoony   I hope OJ Borg hasn't fell out of favour covering drivetime.
    • It’s easy for us to complain about this kind of thing but shippp you correctly mention all the really strong presenters at the moment who have worked their way up. There’s loads of them, so I think the odd personality hire is not the end of the world. Aled’s thought process on this will be the following: 1) Jamie has a huge social media following which will draw listeners 2) 6 Degrees with Jamie & Spencer was consistently near the top of the under 35 bbc sounds listenership - so clearly (although I don’t get it myself) he really appeals to the target age demographic 3) I understand Newlyweds is super popular and so cross-listenership will be hoped for I agree Jamie (and that whole show now) is not my cup of tea but it’s appealing well to a demographic and to be honest us radio nerds are well catered for elsewhere on the schedule ie Greg, M&M, Sam & Danni, James, etc
    • I get about whoever said it is more newsworthy about Jamie's wife co-hosting with him rather than Emil or Lauren or James or whoever because they are good presenters but not known and I agree fully on that but you should looking for what makes the best show even in the short term not who generates the most clicks. Because seeking being in the news can lead to doing some stupid things for virality, not all press is good press and Aled or whoever is head of programmes currently should already know that
    • Its irritating because aside from Jamie the station and Aled seem to have gone off that with not keeping Danny Beard and moving Sam and Danni and effectively Jerry to a bigger slot and giving James, Swarzy, Ore, Lauren, Shanequa etc permanent slots and keeping Emil, Conor and others in the mix for cover. I was hopeful that they were sticking with finding good existent radio talent rather than just picking a name from outside of radio to attract people because they are a name whether or not they are any good at Radio. The Jamie or Danny Beard or further back Maya Jama type of Radio 1 hiring. I know it could be short term for the summer for it appears they are going back to going for influencers or tv personalities or podcasters reality tv stars instead of using the good or great radio talent either at R1 already or other new voices out there in the UK
    • Mollie King back on Future Pop on the 25th June.
    • I hope not but at this point I think you're right. I know the comic relief challenge showed him appearing to sacrifice something and endeared him with the audience (same thing that happened with Paddy McGuinness on Radio 2, show was unpopular before doing his own extreme CiN challenge that endeared him to the audience and made him and the show more popular) and that was deliberately done and he has got better as a presenter but I still think he's being unfairly promoted over decent or even great DJs (both on R1 and otherwise) who have worked their way up through either commercial, BBC local or student radio.
    • Lauren Layfield and Conor Knight are doing 1-4pm on the 20th-21st June. The infamous "Summer On Radio 1" branding returns as well for that slot! Conor Knight solo on the 22nd June. Lauren Redfern in for Nat O'Leary with Vicky on the 20th-22nd June as well. No Melvin with Ricky and Charlie on the 24th June. Glastonbury - 26th June Jack Saunders live from Glastonbury. Radio 1 Dance from from 8pm-11pm. Glastonbury - 27th June Greg James is presenting Breakfast from Glastonbury. 1pm-4pm is from Glastonbury TBA presenters. James Cusack is in for Jack on the Charts Radio 1 Dance from Glastonbury 6pm-9pm with Danny Howard, Sarah Story and Arielle Free.  9pm-12am Glastonbury show. (Presume this will be The 1975 Live Set)
