if i was in charge of the beeb i would, 90% cut for Wogan, Gambo & Paxman, 25% increase for Moyles, Wossy, Jezza, Fry & Edith (i would promote her to head of radio-1), cut Eastenders budget by 20% & give the money to children's TV 19% & give the other 1% to Top Gear :D

To be honest I think I'd rather the BBC fell apart than you run it.

why ?

i would offer you the job of Head of Entertainment or Head of Internet Media Department, £250,000 (take home) + car/benefits, 25 days holiday + 5 paid sick & finial salary pension.

See, you haven't thought this through. You'd get ranted for having favourites and for sacking people just so you can employ Jono.

Imagine that, Alan on the front page of The Mail!

i wouldn't be sacking people that didn't deserve it, Wogan, Gambo & Paxman don't seem to like it at the BBC so they could go, the ones who i have said i would give a pay increase to like the BBC because of the freedom & other opportunity's that working at the BBC gives them (they would have to accept more work though & a extension on their current contracts) as for radio i want a person who loves & lives music & i would either go for Jo or Edith because i don't want a bean counter running it i want someone who is passionate about what they are doing & also promote from within, i would also look at disbanding Radio-3 & replacing it with Classic FM (as they may be loosing there license) as it's less stuck up & has a younger audience than Radio-3 at the very least i would try & get Myleene Klass to Dj for Radio-3.

also i would put more into children's TV & have more science & factual programs on in the daytime, if people are going to sit at home in the daytime they may as well learn something !

also instead of having the sign-language programs on very late at night i would have them put onto BBC3 & BBC4 in the daytime as those channels don't start until 7pm & i think its un-fair on disabled people.

i would also bring back Tomorrows World, incorporating the Click program, live demonstrations & recorded outside broadcast from sciences lab's, technology companies & industry.

i haven't just thought this up, i have thought about it for quite sometime, oh yes i nearly forgot  my picture on the front of the Daily Mail, yeah it would be a pic of me setting fire to a Daily Mail newspaper.

BBC3 and BBC4 don't start until 7pm because they share a platform with CBBC and CBeebies that run from 7am to 7pm.

well that would change for a start !

Doesn't really work like that. In the case of Freeview there just isn't the space. Even if it did come available it would cost millions which I think the Beeb can do without.

if the government want the BBC to save money they shouldn't have forced them to close studios in London & move up north & build new studies up there, that has cost the BBC over a billion pounds !

No, the government has not forced them to do anything. That is called independence.

They could cancel The Weakest Link- nobody watches it

anymore

Yes they do.

Oh and Alan, shush.

No, the government has not forced them to do anything. That is called independence.

the government effectly forced the BBC to move up north otherwise it wouldn't have got a license increase, Labour wanted to move it in to it's heartland.

However, the government effectively forced the BBC to go through with the move, even with a less generous licence fee settlement than the corporation had hoped for.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/may/31/broadcasting.bbc1

The government's approach could, in effect, make the decision on the Salford move for them ' forcing them to go ahead with the project or lose the money.

One other possible way forward which has been looked at by the government is an increase in the BBC's borrowing limit, currently set at '200m, which would help fund the short term costs of the move.

BBC director general Mark Thompson has made clear that this initial 'pinch point' in funding is the main hurdle to overcome, with the move certain to save money in the long term

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/231/231147_bbcs_north_west_move_should_happen.html

Company moves from high wage, high cost London to low wage, low cost North. Funds its move by selling valuable site in London for commercial offices and luxury flats. Profits increase. Everybody'ss 'appy.

So... er, why does the BBC reckon its move up North will cost us taxpayers even more? How can they possibly use that as an argument for a bigger licence fee settlement? They say:

"Last week theBBC'ss Board of Governors approved plans to move some departments to Greater Manchester, saying they gave licence fee payers value for money.

But they stressed the move toSalfordd still depends on the licence fee settlement, which is due in early 2007."

They are claiming the move will cost an extra £400m, and if they don't get it, they're staying put in London. Wet Tess has obviously folded:

"I can say this afternoon that it is my expectation that the BBC will make that move. The government will ensure that the structure of the licence fee settlement makes clear that the move to the North West will happen."

Now why on earth would the government want to bribe the BBC to site its operations in Labourconstiuenciess up North?

Nah. Can't be right.

You'll be telling me next they're directing NHS funds to hospitals in marginal Labour constituencies.

the Weakest Link used to be good & i used to watch it, but now all you get is,

Anne "so you can sing can you ?

contestant "erm, well yes..... sort of, you know"

Anne "put your board down"

contestant (puts board down)

Anne "what can you sing ?"

contestant "well i do like Elvis"

Anne "well go on then"

contestant "what, erm"

Anne "SING some Elvis"

contestant "erm ok i'll try! (proceds to sing a Elvis song badly)

Thank you for showing us your lack of knowkedge if the north. Speaking as a northerner I know this move means more jobs in Salford and better value for money for everyone. Wages in the north are significantly lower than London because the overall costs of everything are lower. Why are you complaining that you are getting better value for money.

the presenters & bbc staff that are moving up north are still going to earn the same amount of money they do now in London, they will also get £40,000 to help them with their move up north, also the BBC has spent £400 million on the buildings, there was nothing wrong with the buildings in London.

im not having go at the north, what im saying is that it was wrong to move some of the BBC up north just to please the government &the extra cost's incurred.

The staff won't get paid the same because London staff get a special allowance (it's been givin the catchy title 'london allowance') so I can't see them getting that when they're up in manchester

    • As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation.  Yes I want representation but only on merit.   Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter  just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo.  The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
