Teenagers who cannot even boil an egg will be turned into "domestic gods and goddesses" in a new BBC3 show that aims to teach young people how to cook.

The four-part series, with a working titled Virgin Cooks, will see a professional chef and a nutritionist take on teenagers who have no idea about cooking and teach them how to buy food and cook for their families.

BBC3 is billing the programme as helping to improve teenagers' health as well as bringing families closer together.

"In an age when the family is fragmented, family values are on the decline and young people have lost the basic skills for domestic life, our chef takes two teenagers who have absolutely no idea how to boil an egg and turns them into domestic gods and goddesses to cook for and buy their entire families food and as a bi product, improve their health and bring them closer together," production notes said.

A BBC spokeswoman added: "With more and more teenagers growing up unable to cook, and a rise in obesity, Virgin Cooks hopes the teenagers newly found skills will help not only improve their own diets but also that of the whole family."

I think I am definately not a good cook, I can really only cook things straight from boxes and stick them in the oven, when it comes to preparing a dish then I have no hope. Also quite partial to the odd take away as my fabulous figure shows :rolleyes:

It's not just M&S food...

I'm quite bad really. I'm not fond of microwave meals. I can do beans on toast, I can do some soup, I can do something from the freezer like chips. The only thing I can really do with no instructions is pasta.

My cooking abilities are something I'm arrogant about. I'm pretty slow, but very good.

I think it started when I decided to become a vegetarian at 14, and my mum agreed, provided I cooked myself a proper dinner every night. Very good training.

I'm no longer a veggie, but definitely developed a feeling for food during those 6 years. I also can't stand microwaves, pre-prepared/fast food.

Only thing I'm not so confident with is fish - I prefer to eat it out.

I dont cook much as I dont see the point in cooking for one *sobs into hankie*

but when I have friends / family around I really go to town!!

When I was the Manager of a Nursery, I would cover if the cook was on leave / sick.

And the children were all fit and healthy so I cant be that bad!! :D

I'm surprisingly very good at making Italian meals; you name it I'll cook it. The same goes for Mexican. I could make enchiladas with my eyes shut. I'm dreading going to uni because I probably won't have enough money to make all these types of meals. Beans out of a tin for the win.

I've got pretty good at cooking. Recently I haven't really bothered doing anything too fancy because I'm eating funny things anyway and sometimes I just don't feel hungry.

I didn't bother learning to cook until I had to, a year ago I could make pasta with tomato sauce (made from scratch, but only just) and things that go straight in the oven. In my first term of living in this house, I made lasagne, spag bol, chicken fajitas (completely from scratch), salmon and roast dinners.

Yeah, ovens are just too unpredictable. Nearly everytime I make something in the oven, it takes at least an extra 15 mins more than what it says. I was cooking fish once, and I had to leave it for an extra 30 minutes - even then it wasn't properly done. I had to throw it away and do a Korma instead.

i can then but it will either but undercooked or overcooked or just disgusting

I made a very nice vegetarian Shepherd's pie earlier. Then my housemate poured pepper and chilli powder in the half I left for my lunch tomorrow because I wouldn't let him eat it, the b*****d.

Now THAT would make me physically violent!

Yeah he is very selfish and careless. At the moment I have put all the junk he left in the living room under one of the sofas including a packet of biscuits, various items of clothing, 3 bags and a load of his work and post. He just doesn't seem to care. Last night I squeezed a washing up sponge over him, it was very tempting to just kick him or punch him, he does make me very angry and he always tries to steal what I've cooked, the lazy git.

I'm going home in 2 days time, so I can cook what I like, and also my mum and sister will cook for me sometimes which is nice. They are both very good cooks.

When I was at college there was one rule 'learn to cook or starve'

first few weeks were ok living on pot noodles, but I eventually gave them up and learnt to cook, never looked back

What kind of college did you go to? :confused:

      I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!

      I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter

      I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?

      Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.

      Echo what most have said here. Connor has great energy which is important for that sort of slot and the shame for him is that the dance line-up is so strong that there's no obvious 'in' for him to get a regular slot -Danny, Sarah, Pete Tong, Arielle, Charlie Hedges, Jerry and Charlie Tee are all great in their slots. A live show on Radio 1 Dance really feels the obvious way to get a proper foot in the door at Radio 1. Although to be fair to the DS critic I think it was just the one poster and can very much hear Connor in my head saying 'in for the legend that is Charlie Hedges'.

      I remember hearing Amy first on Scotts show and she was great on that, the daft quiz questions always made me smile. It's really nice to see the hard work has paid off for them all.

      Actually the worst tends to be those who comment on Radio Today news stories. People who haven’t listened to younger oriented radio stations in years who say things like “who?” about any job going to any presenter aged younger than 50.

      Ahhh very happy for Amy - that’s very well deserved! I didn’t hear their final show but are Matt and Mollie keeping Helena? Hopefully she might be the main producer of their new show!
