Well, I'm going ice skating next week. It's my first time ever doing skating and will be an outing with my work colleagues, and I sense I'm going to be making a fool of myself. Has anyone tried it, is it easy and does anyone have any tips?

Stay nearer the outside of the rink then when/if you fall over you can use the side to get back up. My mate went ice skating the otehr week with me and she went out ito the middle and fell over and was there for a good ten minutes trying to get back up.

Its not too hard as long as you have goo balance. Just have fun.

I used to do it for PE, and the main thing is confidence. Staying near the edge if you've never been is common sense, but you'll learn a lot quicker if you go round with someone else. If you feel yourself falling too far backwards then lean forwards and vice versa, and my personal tip is if you do fall over, clench your fists (the thought of blades over fingers doesn't bear thinking about).

I used to go ice skating as a kid, I found that holding onto the edge for the first half hour or so is a good idea, then you gradually get more confidence and can go further away, but it always took several hours for me to get anywhere near the middle.

Someone got shot dead recently at the ice rink I used to go to, so I'm not sure I want to go there again. If I can persuade my housemate to come along, we will try out the National Ice Centre here, but he's scared because he knows someone who works there and is worried he'll embarrass himself.

Two or three years my sister and I went ice skating because a nearby moor had frozen and everyone in the town went there to skate.

W had one pair of skates so we couldn't do it at the same time and then decided to film each other.

The films with my sister became rather good, she didn't fall or anything. The films with me ended up quite comical. I fell all the time, and sometimes it looked really, really strange.

None of us had ever been ice skating before, and I guess it depends on weither you're talented or not. My sister was, I wasn't.

But I had fun anyway, it doesn't really matter that I made a fool of myself.

Just enjoy yourself :)

First ever time I ice skated was when the ice rink at Perth was just opened, Vaguely remember it was Berlin "Take my breath away" that was on the jukebox at the time, it turned out I was reasonably good considering it was my first time on the ice, no doubt if I tried to skate again I would be awful.

I just have images of myself breaking an ankle or something whilst stopping, thats why ramming the barrier to stop can sometimes be less painful? :P

Try to avoid ice rinks in dodgy areas.

I got beaten up in Portsmouth; the first (and only) time I ever went 'dancing on ice'. Bit of a short-lived hobby!

I remember as a kid of about 7, the teenagers would push me over in order to stop themselves. What a lovely place Streatham is - still, at least in those days, you could skate in peace without anyone shooting you.

If you feel your going to fall down grab the nearest person to you.

I grabed a bunch of school kid's and i managed to stay upright till i got to the edge. They looked shocked but i did thank them as i flew toward the exit.

I love skating.

Nice. A small warning. You WILL fall over, thats guaranteed. Just mind your knees, and keep your fingers tucked in when you do, otherwise...well, your reach won't quite be as long...

Funnily enough, I was just thinking the same thing... ;)

Once went out with someone that skated in the Olympics, until someone bashed into her at an ordinary ice rink and in the tumble ruined her legs for good with their skates. Don't think she ever skated again. A cautionary tale perhaps.

Been a few times. Not for me.

I hesitate to say I prefer Strictly... :*

Didn't somebody recently break their leg on the show? You'd have to be bonkers to do that kind of thing! :woo:

I've only ever been ice-skating once, and that was when I was really young. I don't remember being much good at it! Hahaha!

But yeah, stay near the outter-edge, I think. So you can hold-on to the side if you don't feel balanced or confident enough. And try to remember to keep your fingers in if/when you do fall-over.

On the other hand, you could just all go right out there together and make fools of yourselves just for the hell of it. Afterall, it's just a bit of fun, right? And if you're all falling all-over the place then it'll give you a few laughs whilst you're there and later when you come to telling others all about it.

Last time I went ice skating I managed to seriously injure myself and was in a cast for 3 months.

In my experience, its just dangerous.

I dont know if I could go again.

Sorry to worry you Jono.

    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
    • Purley on the R1 Dance station.. Someone on DS said don't expect to see any changes to the schedule on the new stations however if they are taking on Capital Dance with this, which they clearly are, which has live presenters 7am - 10pm except for the 11am mix then they'll surely have to have a proper scheduled set of shows. At the moment Arielle is the only "live" per say show and only "live" a few days a week with earlier shows being repeated Thursday Friday and Saturday. Connor and Charlie are clearly pre records but was this only for the time it was online only and they have already got a schedule ready to go on day 1? also of note is that Charlie is taking over a podcast as well as starting a new project with podcasting which makes me wonder if she is about to step back from Dance Anthems all together to concentrate on those and Connor takes over? So you could have Arielle doing 9-12 weekdays live then someone else 12-3 and Connor live 3-6 on R1D and doing Dance Anthems on a Saturday.
    • As none of the Going Home Team aren't currently on the air, that's a bit if an issue. Considering most of the Dance DJs will be out there, I'm surprised none of them are being utilised to host the 1-4 slot that weekend.
    • Going Home presenters have done the last few years ?
    • Nat and Vicky are being sent to Ibiza this year. They’ll be live on Friday 1st August from 1-4pm.
    • Since Radio 1 Dance and Anthems have been allowed to broadcast on DAB, do we think they’ll be a proper schedule of shows like on Radio 1 Dance with the morning show and Dance Anthems at drive time. Maybe Lauren Redfern, Tyler Selby, Chrissy Cameron or Matt Hallsworth will be scheduled on named shows like Hits Radio 00s or Capital Anthems rather than the generic ‘Radio 1 Anthems’ show. Obviously it would probably cost more to produce actual shows on the station however.
    • There's been a lot of positive reaction to the Mylo and Rosie news so am interested now to hear what their shows are like. And yep wouldn't be surprised if they stay on beyond July as cover ever so often. And that Friday-Sunday news was hidden in the small print a little. It presumably means we lose Party Anthems all that month as that is what has happened this year with Big Weekend, Glasto for example. I certainly I hope it isn't Party Anthems being quietly axed full stop - it and Future Pop are 2 real hidden gems on Radio 1.
    • I’m pleased for Mylo and Rosie, they were highly thought of in our local area and definitely worthy of that slot
