What's going on with Newsbeat?

Tanks on Jordan's lawn? Perhaps it is a one-week move to keep the music and chat flowing while they're fighting Capital.

Thing is though, unless they're already over their quota and have had permission to make permanent changes, they can't just cut back on news without making up the minutes elsewhere. There was a week a couple of years ago where the first bulliten of the day never went out for some reason.. so they made up for it with an extra bulliten during Vick & Jordan's show at 5pm.

That was because early breakfast was cancelled for that week.

Its interesting that they’ve been able to take that time off, unless they’re planning to put it back on at some stage; they missed 2 bulletins in 2021 (because of the death of Prince Philip and technical issues) and they were under their quota.

I mean with a death of someone in the immediate circle of the royal family as happened with Phillip and the Queen died the station became a news service effectively so had already been excused from that as meeting that quota in that time.

Yes, to be honest it’s where the BBCs faults lie thinking they have to be in competition with their commercial rivals. But I do think Jordan on capital brings bigger competition and rivalry as he comes across more relatable and down to earth than James. Sometimes think Greg James can almost be forcing a sense of humour and entertainment.

I have almost no doubt it is because of Jordan North starting at Capital. I mean most commercial radio stations have block of ads + news at the start of the hour and Radio 1 obviously wants to start playing music ahead of them. It can't be a coincidence that this change happened at the same time when rival radio station starts its new breakfast show and the next week the change is gone.

The main question is how they will meet the quota, as adding 5pm bulletin won't be enough.

Has there been any talk/explanation why Calum has been on in the afternoon this week and if this is "permanent"?

Tbf, Calum does cover the main newsbeat and afternoon bullitens on occasion with someone else covering the mornings. presumably Priya Rai/Pete Allison are unavailable this week.

Lots of people including Calum have been filling in for Pria Rai this year as Pria has been filling in for Ankur Desai on Asian Network since January.

The BBC trying to compete with the commercial sector by reducing its News output seems to be wrong on many levels

One of the latest bad decisions Aled seems to be making recently

As per the exact same discussion on the DS forums... This decision makes sense as a limited change to counter the new Capital breakfast show, and aside from the poorly-judged risk he took with Danny his tenure as head of R1 has been good.

Posted this over on DS but while I'm sure there are probably reasons behind this it's weird optics how easily Radio 1 were able to cut time off Newsbeat this week purely it seems for a petty tit-for-tat gesture at Capital's new show but then weren't prepared to show any level of flexibility with reducing Newsbeat’s length a few weeks back when Mollie was supposed to finish their Comic Relief challenge for the day at around 5.45pm (with the DJs all but asking to delay Newsbeat).

I guess the issue with the 5.45pm Newsbeat is that it also airs on 1Xtra and Asian Network but surely you could still air those as normal on those two stations and then do a separate Radio 1 edition later. They've certainly done that before with the half past the hour bulletins.

Yes they normally do this on Breakfast - sometimes Greg failed to opt in then there will be a separate one after a song.

    • It's amazing how stable that slot has been over the past 20 years - 3 presenters only. By comparison, the previous 20 years seen 8 or 10 presenters depending how you measure it.  (Whether you treat Kevin and Zoe as separate to Zoe and whether you count Mark Goodier's 4 months on Breakfast as more than just cover).
    • On July 8th Greg will surpass Grimmy's tenure on Radio 1 breakfast (5 years, 319 days) as the second-longest breakfast show presenter. He has already passed Tony Blackburn and Sim Mayo. I'm not sure if he will make Moyles' record of 8 years, 253 days, but he certainly still seems fresh and full of ideas!
    • I guess we'll have to wait and see when the new schedule kicks in, although I could see Scott staying where he is.  Assuming that's the case and there are no other moves, there would be several available studios for Matt & Mollie - 82C or 82E of the 'old' studios, and 82M or 82N of the new ones.
    • The BBC commissioning brief mentions it is a 'mid morning show' for Radio 1 Dance https://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/documents/comm_brief_r1_dance_morning_show.pdf
    • Nothing to apologise about, I was just intrigued on how DS and UM react
    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
    • Maia Beth is doing Friday Early Breakfast on 7th & 14th June.
    • Joel Mitchell is in for Nat on Sunday 9th June.
    • Ore Olukoga is on 13.00-16.00 on Friday 31st May and Friday 7th June.  Nikita Kanda is doing Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
    • Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.
