I think it wasn’t a proper dig it didn’t seem like an intentional offence might bit sticking your foot into it. But think Arielle was just saying honestly what she thought about the song which I mean at the radio 1’s dance weekend the playlist should be set to a higher bar than that Barney horse girl thing. All Charlie had to do was mute the mics and play the music. She’ didn’t have to address anything on air.

Charlie did rise and give lip back on air and needed to respect a difference of an opinion. Presenters need to be able to say if they find a song sounds bad. As there’s definately needs to step things up a bit.

I think there are two things here.

1. Should Charlie have responded?  I don't know but I know that when things are happening live any of us can respond.  The important thing is that Charlie moved on very quickly.

2. This simply isn't about Arielle's opinion.  She was that drunk friend being a pain in the butt but live on one of Europe's biggest radio station.  Had she been sober (a) she probably wouldn't have crossed that line of criticising the choice of a fellow presenter live on air and (b) it wouldn't have been expressed that way.

I’m intrigued, what happened with Lisa I’anson?

Googled it so might save you a search think a bit of a no-show situation. I never heard of her before a minute ago. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/jun/15/lisa-anson-sacked-after-ibiza

I think the point of had she been sober and said the same things and that wouldn’t been a problem. Then thats no problem I think she could’ve taken it on the chin and once sober up can just move on from it. She wasn’t that much of a pain in a butt like it or loathe it. It will just look a bit sterile to be concerned with presenter looking like a drunken friend. She didn’t criticise Charlie in a personal choice. She could’ve done much better than playing crap and think presenters should be able to say what they think about song choices. I think for Europe’s biggest radio station could be playing top rate songs

Just tracked back on this thread to hear the actual incident.

Pretty entertaining radio, albeit in a way nobody would plan for.

Weird shift of attitude from the host - it's all welcome fun until the moment that she gets criticised - then all of a sudden it's the worst thing in the world.

I think Arielle took it too far and as Charlie rightfully said it was a lack of respect to her. Charlie's shift of attitude was fair enough, it became less of a joke and more of a criticism of her music choices - I didn't find arielle's joke funny in the slightest and clearly neither did Charlie and I respect her for standing up for herself.

This story indicates a bit more of the background

It seems to suggest that Charlie didn't really want Arielle on air in that condition.

If Charlie was persuaded to let her on in the first place, against her better judgment, then that does put things in a different light ...

It wasn’t a joke. Arielle was just expressing her opinion about the music choices which she was right about and should be able to speak about it. If presenters can’t share their opinions like that radio 1 and even Charlie needs to lighten up and take things on the chin.

I doubt was a proper opinion. She was out of it .

I'm also old enough to remember the Lisa L'anson thing, that was far bigger than this.

I don't mind this really, it's a small telling off and move on. Radio 1 has been ever since I've listened, too nicey nicey at times. Now more than ever. That's why I loved when Moyles for instance back in the day basically said what he thought sometimes about a song. It was entertaining.

No chance in hell every DJ loves every song on the playlist. Not everything is brilliant to everyone as its portrayed on air sometimes. Not saying slag tunes off every show, but if there's something you just don't get the appeal of it makes good radio to say what you think.

on the grid.

And how she went about it.

"Sorry, still not sold on that one" would be fine.  It was a drunken rant made a bit personal.  As I said earlier in the thread - the PITA drunk friend that is starting to annoy you on a night out.

To repeat - if it's only what happened on-air it's a straightforward wrist slap and that's it gone.

Stop speculating it wasn't personal a presenter is allowed to not be sold on that one and shouldn’t have to watch their mouth on that one Charlie shouldve taken it on the chin.

But it was personal!

"Sorry not sold on that one" isn't personal.

The whole "I thought better of you" and about to go on about it is personal.

In the workplace there is a professional way of expressing an opinion and an unprofessional one.

Completely agree - it was an unprofessional way to express her opinion and Charlie had every right to react the way she did.

If you think it’s unprofessional to express an opinion you might as well to ask the BBC to sack the lot and churn out artificial intelligence programmed radio shows. It’s a music station an entertainment one and presenters are allowed to express opinions on the music they play is it unprofessional for Jack Saunders or Clara Amfo to express a positive opinion on a song or it’s only the bad ones.

If you can’t say you’d expect to hear some better music, as all she was saying she’d expect Charlie to be playing better music than that horse girl song. What can she say? Charlie just needs to loosen up and not to make a thing about it.

I personally still think it was the way it was said rather than what was said.  To show up drunk is unprofessional, and to interrupt and disrespect a colleague while they are trying to present a show is rude.

Scott used to champion some awfully questionable pop songs, just for the fun of it. Rebecca Black - Friday being one example. It was a terrible song, but it was a laugh.   Chris would also often throw subtle shade at Scott's bangers choices, so negative opinions on songs are definitely allowed, but I think Arielle's tone was out of order and brought down the mood of what Charlie was trying to make an uplifting dance show and a cheesey fun song that she wanted to play.

Even Zane Lowe respected Scott's love for cheesey pop so much that he had a hand in the whole playing out the entire Britney album stunt, I'm sure that music wasn't to Zane's taste, but then nobody was asking him to play it on his show.

I see what you're saying - of course we all have our right to an opinion and so does Arielle but it was more about the way she said it rather than what she said as ladybarefoot posted above. It came across as rude/disrespectful and that's why I feel quite strongly about this.

Also to say Charlie should loosen up and not make a thing about it is a bit unfair imo. Charlie can feel however she likes - no one can tell her otherwise as that's her feelings and she's entitled to them. If she felt offended etc then that's her right, you may disagree but no one can tell her how to feel/react.

She’s an autonomous being so no one can tell her how to feel or react thats nature of being human. But you got to be able to take a bit of honesty and make sure people can talk honestly to you. Charlie did over react. If she didn’t brush things of it kind of adds to the drama and conflict that needs to move forward. It wasn’t that disrespectful and not expected to be nicey nicey all the time. Atleast Arielle wasn’t faking anything.

    • It's made it into the Daily Mail as another reason to bash the station. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13417631/bbc-radio-2-facebook-tiktok-instagram.html
    • I expect that the axing of Chill Out Anthems may be related to the decommissioning and shutfdown of Radio 1 Relax. I assume soon BBC could announce or make official when it’s going to be shutdown
    • The next RAJAR will be putting a lot of pressure on Aled. Will his decisions over Danny Beard and Jamie Laing and to lose Jordan North pay off? If not, it is likely bosses will be looking for his successor.  I am interested to know what fans of the station think?  Ian Chaloner who worked for Greg, Scott and Grimny before rising through the ranks must stand a chance. He is now mainstream editor.  An outsider choice but Greg's former producer Chris Sawyer would be great. He has the creativity and has held the ship well on breakfast. Although I know he is no longer with them.
    • Could this be similar to what Arielle Free did in Covid on Weekend Early Breakfast?
    • Greg is doing Breakfast from 7am-11am on 23rd May which is a thirty minute extension of his usual Friday show and consistent with Big Weekend timings. Also it looks like from the 1st June, Radio 1 Chillout Anthems at 4am is being replaced by Radio 1 Anthems with Maia Beth and will also air at the same time on a Sunday.
    • I mean I've been growing our engagement on Facebook in my department, there's still an untapped audience there. Also, as you alude to, the number of community groups has grown a lot since lockdown. I'd love to hear more about their thinking. If this had been Radio 1's strategy I don't think anyone would have disagreed.
    • I think they must’ve been slowly killing of their social media presence I know for Radio 2 and 6 they do have dedicated unofficial social media groups so there is an audience. All Request Friday and features like that has a place on social media as can get requests via comment sections but I think Facebook struggles to know what it is these days.
    • I just think it's more about what they're doing. If all you've got is a DJ dancing to Beyonce's latest hit for thirty seconds or Sara Cox reading out the All Request Friday number in a funny way it's not really what Facebook prioritises. I think it's great that studio interaction, but it does lend itself to Instagram and TikTok more. But I honestly believe there is a place for Facebook with the Radio 2 audience. The trouble is Radio 2 have barely used Facebook for the last year so there doesn't seem to have been a strategy there.
    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
    • These late announcements are so lacklustre. It's not quite like the time they announced Harry Styles last minute!
    • Friday - Nathan Dawe, Wilkinson Saturday - Jax Jones Sunday - London Grammar, Remi Woolf, AJ Tracey
    • Probably got fed up of the usual moaning bastards all over it, asking for Ken Bruce and Jimmy Young back on air.
    • Think it may have been better to include Radio 1 in this and 1 xtra ultimately focus on boosting a BBC Sounds social media to bring the multi-generational content marketed to a broader audience through one singular channel and having a separate social brand skewed to younger audiences maybe they should consider just having a @BBC @BBCSounds  @BBCSport @BBCNews @BBCFresh (youth brand) social media acounts national.
