Radio 1 upsets Kylie fans

Radio 1 played Tina Turner the other day when I tuned in, it's a one of spot play on the chart show it's not gonna piss off all the grime and rap fans with one play really.. And even if you are young, you'd of have to have lived under a rock to not even of heard of her. Strange choice.

Although I'm sure the age old debate of Radio 1 not playlisting certain records will crop up again. Tbh, it could reach the top 5 and I doubt they'll even C list it. Long gone are the days of Radio play being a deal-breaker in songs becoming hits.

The classic Radio 1 playlist debate. I guess the higher Kylie goes in the chart the more notable Padam's absence is from the playlist. But the playlist is always a bit of an enigma - there have been songs right on brand for Radio 1 and doing well in the chart that don't make the playlist.

Whereas some Radio 1 favourites seem to be able to jump onto the A-List at will (a few names instantly pop to mind).

A big example of that probably being Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5. They wouldn't playlist it despite how big it got. They gave it a lot of spot plays as it became too big to ignore I recall.

Then they pretty much playlisted everything they did from then on through the 2010's (and of course had supported them heavily back in the day as well). Hips Don't Lie by Shakira is another one that wasn't playlisted...

... which is odd as I could've sworn I heard that a lot on Radio 1 at the time. Both tracks have been played a lot since though.

Kylie is a one off, she's a master of reinvention. In the late 90s she kind of faded off a bit, but came back in 2000 with spinning around. Which set her up again for the following 15 years. If its getting a lot of tik tok support then I'm pretty sure Kylie isn't too bothered nor her label.

Truth is for a younger audience 25 or less today, that's where its at. Getting on the Radio 1 playlist isn't quite as relevant as it used to be. It's nothing radio 1 do wrong, just the way of the world and young people's interests now.

The funny thing is, although a specialist show (which I think is great btw). The 00s show on a Sunday morning. Would think nothing of chucking on Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Love At First Sight, Wow etc I get it's a decade show, but she's still going out on Radio 1 after all if played on there.

Also the top show on BBC Sounds for under 35s

There isn't a clear answer to this. For me it's a two sided thing, a very established artist shouldn't be played by default, equally they shouldn't not be played just as they have been around a long time. Coldplay and Adele are good examples. Also note that Capital didn't play Kylie's single.

If you're referring to her new one, it's on Capital's playlist.

Going back to Shakira too. Has it been played on Radio 1 in recent years? Like 10 min takeover, or 00's show? Or is it one they still hold on to from 17 years ago?

Greg played it a couple of years ago, bygones be bygones I guess.

Beyonce is another one. The first time she would have been played on Radio 1 is in early 1998 with Destinys Child No No No, which got to Number 5. She would have been about 17 at that point. Solo probably in 2002 with Work It Out. She's a huge artist and still relevant, but is now 41.

What can sometimes feel a bit odd is when you'll hear an older song by an artist played by Radio 1 when they have a newer track out that sounds on brand for Radio 1 that isn't play listed.

Am slightly surprised even if it doesn't make the main playlist that the Kylie track hasn't popped up on a show say like Party Anthems where it might fit welll in - even if not the original version there surely is some sort of remix they could find to play.

Whether or not Radio 1 play it there does seem to be a bit more hype & monentum with 'Padam Padam' than there has been in a while with a Kylie track.

Pleasantly surprised I predicted that - fits in well on that slot. I'm available if anybody wants this week's lottery numbers.

Radio 1 playing new music by Madonna & Kylie on the same day does feel a bit 'U OK Hun' and them trying to go 'happy now!' to those saying they sideline older female artists.

The Madonna one in particularly I'd say is an 'experience'. It's grown on me a little but is very guilty pleasure and could understand people hating it.
