One of the most loved features on the Breakfast show. And quite a few views on Radio 1 here are understandably quite widely-held e.g. Greg being one of the strongest DJs on the station, Jordan being a Breakfast DJ in waiting. So thought an unpopular opinion thread of our own might be fun (maybe even one for Radio 2 as well if people were up for it).

Bit of deja-vu here!!

Two years on tbf - lot has changed.

mine is that I quite enjoy Dean and Vickys show - it seems to go under the radar a bit on here and in general. It was always gonna be hard to replace Scott but I think they’ve done it.

My other one is that since the start of the year at least Rickie, Melvin and Charlie’s show has become a lot better. It does feel like they hold back a little bit but their show is definitely a lot better and has more of an identity since it started in September 2021 and sounded almost as vanilla as Friday early breakfast.

I know, was just teasing!

Mine is that it's time to move Clara on. She isn't a match for her predecessors on that show.

After a shaky start I think they've created a decent show. Not comparing it to Scott & Chris as that was just unique and vcery special, but D&V's show works and is an entertaining listen.

My one would be that Mollie King is actually one of the best DJs on Radio 1 these days. The difference in quality now she's back with Matt compared to his shows with Jamie are night & day and she's shown she can host pretty well on her own too with both Future Pop and presenting solo sometimes when Matt is away.

Also I can't say I particularly enjoyed her spell on Radio 1 but given how popular she seems with the Radio 1 demographic should Radio 1 have perhaps paired up Maya Jama with another presenter? She clearly struggled solo but a Jordan & Maya double act may have covered up her weaknesses a bit more with Jordan being much more creative.

I'd say writing anything vaguely positive about Maya veers beyond 'unpopular' into the 'absurd' ???

Oh I shed no tears when she left but am just surprised they didn't try to put her in a duo as a last attempt particularly as they seemed to be big fans of making every weekend team a duo around then. Especially as she seems quite popular with a sizable contingent in the Radio 1 demographic.

Also as much as I rate most of them some Radio 1 personnel do have some verbal tics that get right on my wick and I can't help but notice.

1) Arielle Free's 'playing that one for'. I can understand why she probably does it on Early Breakfast where it's a smaller more dedicated listenership but it makes it sound like she's constantly doing an unofficial 10 Minute Takeover throughout her show.

2) Callum Leslie is great on Newsbeat but he in particularly seems to pretend he's talking to somebody before going to a clip/segment. Fine if it's a Newsbeat reporter but when it's something like 'quite the display. Right, Jurgen Klopp?' before then going into a clip of a Jurgen Klopp interview it just sounds ridiculous.

Though no doubt there are many other DJs with similar but these two particularly spring to mind. And to be clear I like both.

I preferred her on Radio 1 as to her as a television presenter. As with radio you aren’t judged on personal image, how you present yourself but more rather the quality of broadcaster. I find not a comment on Jama herself but when people comment on her presenting TV its less about her personality and presenting talent but rather her image.

When I joined this platform forum I think I shared my fair share of unpopular takes and comments. One unpopular opinion is that the station for generation z is probably rather marmite.

Also the official chart due to how repetitive and little that the official charts change week in week out should just be embedded into Friday night drive than have its own show as a more compact run-down so if its a track that’s been at number one for five weeks or in the chart for almost to a year wouldn’t play it. Only really focusing on airtime of new chart entrants and major chart changes for song plays.

And with the album chart maybe have it read out in a music news bulletin on 6 Music. And just have the chart update in Future Sounds.

Mine would probably be that

1. Anthems is actually a really good feature

2. Charlie Hedges is better solo than with Rickie & Melvin

I’ve heard a few times Charlie Hedges present Dance Anthems haven’t found myself feeling impressed. Maybe controversially should’ve stayed with Kiss: Rickie, Melvin & Charlie.

I get you don't like the criticism of her TV image, but did you actually like her on Radio 1? I mean someone had to, I've just never seen anyone admit it yet ?

My unpopular opinion is that I have no idea why people rave about Sian Eleri.

She seems like a nice person but to me she sounds no different than any competent BBC Regional radio presenter with nothing that stands out significantly.  Nothing awful, nothing offensive but nothing remarkable that has me thinking "she'd make a great presenter of...."

I think thats a fair comment to make I like Sian Eleri. But what does well is at being fairly ordinary and for a music programme is good for just keeping the music coming for the genre of chill programme fits the bill as its meant to be easy listening

I don’t know whether I liked but wouldn’t say I disliked her on Radio 1 but found her way more preferable to what she is like when she is on television. Think natural low-key stripped back nature of radio found her more preferable and not as forced or overdoing it that arguably from the last time I listened to daytime radio 1 has been like. But find Katie Thistleton makes a stronger broadcaster for the slot. But found arguably she didn’t over-do it or force it as seen how Greg James, Charlie Hedges to Craig Charles has done at times when listened to his 6 Music’s show and found flicked on Jack Saunders show he was way over-doing and feel his emphusiasm and description of music isn’t far from when he started the show and by now listeners, regular ones know what they tuned in for.

On that basis, she I found was an easy listen but neither one fo a strong opinion for me.

Controversially I don’t think she is any worse than Greg James

I personally feel the show doesn't take the same risks it did under Phil Taggart. Perhaps that was why Phil was out though.

I’m curious to learn of what you say those risks were. Phil Taggart is a talented music broadcaster did good with the chillest show as did when covering for Annie or Huw. I found though I liked him still doing the 7pm-9pm slot will always found the show was better when it was starting from 10pm as listeners are winding down and getting to sleep. That said think maybe with the Relax stream feed maybe the type of show it has maybe has been diluted? Not certain.

    • Thanks for posting these! I've been looking for any clips/full shows from the late 90's and through the 00's and early 2010's. I found one a while back on Mixcloud from August 2000 with Clive Warren on weekend early breakfast into Mark Goodier on Saturday breakfast (which i believe was his last 'regular' show outside of chart and was replaced not long after leaving him with just the chart for his final 2 years)
    • A few more new uploads from recent days: Zane Lowe sitting in for Moyles and revealing the No. 1 for the BBC's Sound of 2012 Greg James's first show of 2013 Three more recordings of antique Moyles, first from the 8th and 11th Jan 2000, and the other I've only yesterday managed to figure out was from the 23rd March 2000, with Chris & Co. live from the TopShop in Leeds where he started his career. Two shows with six years between them, Dev's first early breakfast of 2012, and the first Moyles breakfast show of 2006. And likewise, two shows from Chris and Dev with nine years between them (the 2002 recording also has a full edition of Newsbeat and some Dave Pearce too)
    • Dean McCullough - Ore Olukoga Greg James Cover - Sam Macgregor & Danni Diston RMC Cover - Nat O'Leary & Vicky Hawksworth Matt Edmondson Cover - Lauren Layfield/ Mollie King Cover - Jeremaiah Asiamah Matt & Mollie Both Of at the same time Cover - James Cusack Katie Thiselton Cover - Lauren Layfield Jamie Laing Cover - Emil Franchi    James Cusack Cover - Mylo & Rosie Nat O'Leary Cover - Lauren Redfern Vicky Hawksworth Cover - Minah Shannon Sam Macgregor Cover - Conor Knight Danni Diston Cover - Lauren Redfern
    • I think James should cover Greg, it's weird it takes a duo to cover Greg
    • I really struggled with the NYE show this time around. I’ve listened for the past 5 years and this was by far the one I enjoyed the least. Too much newer music and not enough classics round midnight. Really hope they can get Charlie Hedges back on it next year as she’s so good.    As for the rest of Radio 1 in 2025 - I haven’t always been able to listen as much as I’d like. Our work radio is set to what was once the local radio station but is now a national Scottish streamed station (which in comparison to Radio 1 - is awful). I’m mainly listening to Greg before 8 and then Going Home after 4. Greg is still as good as ever and a really steady set of hands. Going Home just needs some stability. Katie is the one least likely to leave and I find that interesting as she wasn’t originally part of the Going Home show when Jamie was drafted in. I can’t see Vick being back somehow - think she wants more presenting (which I think she’s really good at) and Jamie - the constant days off… it feels like the colleague who’s always pulling a sickie. i used to really enjoy the 00s/Noughties show but I think it’s been done dirty and needs a fresh set of eyes on it. Nat and Vicky just focus on playing music that is still relatable to now and it’s split between anthems and Nat and Vicky. I used to really like listening to it as they’d often play songs I’d forgotten. But recently it’s the same old, same old. I think the Noughties show needs an approach of someone a little more specialist (like Fearne does with Sounds of the 90s) that can really bring it on. A good example could be - Geese are getting all the plaudits right now - but their music reminds me on the Doves around 2002, which was very hyped at the time (and played to death by Radio 1).

    • Michelle Visage is presenting the Saturday lunchtime show (1-3pm) this week. There's no sign of Emma Willis in the schedule yet and it's still under Zoe Ball's name.
    • Franky Wah sits in for Pete Tong on Friday 9th Jan Ahadadream sits in for Pete Tong on Friday 16th Jan
    • Superb! I'll enjoy having a gander through those. Here's something for you to look through if you haven't seen already in return. Lots of Radio 1 and Moyles stuff in here early 2000's and some breakfast, it was all uploaded during the pandemic by someone I kinda know. You may have seen some on mixcloud too. https://archive.org/details/chasefm If you want a more specific breakdown of the Moyles ones in there, I put them in a thread on chrismoyles.net https://chrismoyles.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=28030
    • I've compiled all seventeen of my tapes here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Em5QUpE7_ESnKThQmTij1OF1LbdpOmk_?usp=drive_link There's also a document with some of my attempts to breakdown the recordings on each tape.
    • I think one of the October 98 ones is Moyles' second ever afternoon show, caught by chance by Adam I believe. You'll have to let me know if you have any of the missing bits from anything incomplete, if you get the raw MP3 over of it I can bind them together in audition to complete it.   Really looking forward to hearing the early 00's Moyles stuff, right up my era for my time listening to Radio 1. I'll listen to that one later tonight on my walk.
    • Some more bits and pieces: Sara Cox, with her first show of 2010: Scott sitting in for Fearne & Reggie on the first chart of 2009: And the first of the digitised tape recordings, Chris Moyles from (I believe) the 5th January 2000. Regarding those Google Drive files, there's some great stuff in there! I think I have some bits from at least one of those partial Moyles shows in there, so will need to take a listen...
    • That's rare to see a full day from Radio 1 like that. The Scott Mills one is my recording from the day. I put up my archive a few years ago to mixcloud of all the shows I recorded of him between 2005 and 2007. Before you had to start paying. I think this should be viewable, but I digitised a tape collection a couple of so years ago. Not my recordings, someone else's. All Radio 1 from 1997 to about 2000. Chris Moyles, Zoe Ball and Kevin Greening, Mark and Lard. Plus a few other bits. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ul5dq3vQlIOkzsVc5UK4Y05FSXIm_TXV
    • Who would everyones ideal cover presenter be for each show?
    • First few of these now available: Tom Deacon sitting in for Sara Cox on New Years Day 2012. Despite being a regular listener at the time I have zero recollection of him. One I'm sure will go down well round these parts, three and a half hours with Scott (and Chappers) in for Moyles on his first show of the new year, 2nd January 2008. Radio 1's Top 40 chart of 2007, with Fearne (no Reggie, surprise surprise). This has been made available before via the chart community, but the first half hour is in better quality. From December 2012, Reggie Yates's final show at Radio 1, with that years Xmas Top 40. Again, technically already available elsewhere, but this copy includes Reggie's final goodbye link, which is missing from other versions. And if anyone can cope with even more Xmas music post-December, two shows from Christmas Day 2007, Greg's first ever annual Xmas morning show, and a special one-off with Kylie Minogue.   On a final note, I uploaded these last year (with the exception of Scott) as a bit of a test run. A full day in the company of Radio 1 from Moyles through to Colin Murray. https://www.mixcloud.com/Brigham27/playlists/r1-28062007/
