Apart from Charlie Hedges, none of the other radio 1 DJs have congratulated Dean on R1s Instagram or twitter account. Some of them have commented on a latest post about Scott but ignored the Dean post.

I think they’re all annoyed with Aled’s decision to overlook M&M. On social media the vast majority of people are aghast at Dean taking over and M&M being overlooked.

Are you sure about that? Greg has congratulated them all on his own twitter, one of many examples.

Don't think there's some huge conspiracy going on, but I share your sentiment. Before the announcement I would've snapped your hand off for Matt and Mollie.

I've made my peace that the radio will be going off when Greg signs off in the mornings. I liked Rickie, Melvin and Charlie in the evening but their PG daytime show doesn't work for me. Can't stand Dean and I think Jordan is far better solo.

Greg has. Jordan and Katie did it on air. Sam and Danni have. Charlie has. Natalie has. Conor has. Scott and Chris did it on air. Others will have done it privately. Even if they haven’t, they might have been working.

I agree that Jordan was so much better on his own. Vick is so perfect that it makes him look like a fool. Dean is a terrible presenter; just rabbits on about nothing. I don’t mind R,M&C. They’re very similar to Scott and Chris as they’re three long-time mates having a laugh much the same as Matt and Mollie really. Forcing presenters together who barely know each other doesn’t really work. Hopefully Chris will gel with Roman Kemp!

Yeah exactly. Also I'm not sure it's to do with unpopularity, it's probably more that most haven't had time to get to know him properly. Scott has been there for 24 years...

Think maybe something bit harsh and cruel in this comment but I get what you mean. Matt and Mollie would be the most natural successors. But shows Aled Haydn Jones is making greater risk of trying to make the station sound more young and fresh with less experienced presenters. This statement of mine would make me naturally wonder why did Rickie, Melvin & Charlie get poached.

Think if it was Matt & Mollie could’ve created opportunities for broadcasters like Maia Beth or James Cusack to join.

I think reflecting on when started tuning in bout nine to ten years ago there was more live and specialist presenter driven content. With the Review Show with Edith Bowman. Evening shows like Huw Stephens and Phil and Alice. Do some what miss the overnight original Indie Show with midnight drop and such like the Kench comedy original series.

Do think next time around Relax/Dance & Anthems maybe the next head of Radio 1’s issue to address

Lack of Radio 1 events and office parties may be an issue. With Dean McCullough broadcasting his weekend show from Salford and doesn’t really go into the Radio 1 HQ at Broadcasting House that often that is likely a factor in it. I think theres less general socialisation between the newer presenters.

I take your point about Greg, but the rest of your list is ridiculous. Jordan, Scott and Chris being told to do it by their boss vs doing it freely on social media is a whole different situation. Neither Scott or Chris sounded enthusiastic about Dean on air.

The other main presenters of R1 have freely commented on a post about Scott Mills (that came after the post about Dean) but all chose to ignore the post about Dean. Katie and Nat got promoted so ofc they’re gonna congratulate themselves. Who’s Conor?   You’re clutching at straws here.

Why don’t you have a look on the R1 twitter account and Instagram account for yourself? You’ll see only Charlie Hedges and the radio 2 account congratulating them but the rest are people annoyed by the decision.

Not harsh at all, Dean is by far the worst DJ on R1. He knows it as the very few times I have accidentally listened to him he mentions people complaining and asking him to quit. He’s a massive diva that was called out by Greg. He doesn’t work well with others, he always talks over Katie and tries to run the show when he subs for Matt or Jordan. It’s always all about him which is why they gave him such a weak co presenter. She barely spoke the one time I listened to her and seemed a pushover. Probably why she got paired up with Dean. Probably why Katie may have been offered the role but she turned down the opportunity to work with Dean. As I say, have a look at social media, which has a far bigger membership, and look at how disappointed people are with the hire

As to your other point about being young and fresh? 8 of the presenters on the weekday (from 7am - 20:00) range from early 30s to late 40s. If he wanted young and fresh he would have replaced Scott and Chris with Sam and Dani. He replaced Scott (a gay) with Dean and Vicky (LGBT) it comes across as box ticking at this point.

I concur, I personally don’t get the Jordan and Vick pairing. I think he always sounds so uptight when he’s with her and comes across like he isn’t relaxed but then when Katie subs for Vick, he is a different person altogether. They should have been paired up from the start. I don’t think Jordan could have done a show solo at this point as he isn’t polished yet.

Guys, give the guy a break. I saw some of you in the chat talking how Radio 2 listeners don’t want change and complaining about Scott taking Steve’s show. But you’re doing exactly the same.

Yes, Dean is different from Scott and Chris. But Scott is also different from Steve Wright. What radio stations are trying to do from time to time is to change things a bit and experiment. And that exactly what’s happening in both Radio 1 and 2.

Everybody wins in current situation. Radio 1 gets to try new things and fresh talent in afternoon slot, Katie is getting a permanent slot and Matt and Mollie still hosts a big show and get to cover Breakfast.

Yes evidence of Greg James or Katie Thistleton disliking or hating on Dean McCullough is no more than conspiracy and fabricating reality. We don’t know what is says off air and off twitter. Lesson is don’t read into things that much

I think should have as an unwritten rule able to criticise presenters and dislike them but not get personal and coming up with conspiracy that isn’t even hearsay. We can all say we’d have or prefer a presenter to do one show or slot. But need to try to be nice about presenters. As we all know there’d be a time when that the station will May make some changes that seem to end a good era if something we like. But, Dean and Vicky could prove any nay sayer wrong.

Also the line of box tick diversity exercise is lasy. As for many years young people who have talent as broadcasters whether people of colour, LGBTQIA+, disability haven’t been given the opportunities to do so.

Think there’s more that can be done but think it is moving in the right direction

There could be lots of reasons for people not publicly posting, as others above have mentioned. But, as with anyone anywhere starting a new job, I hope Dean and Vicky will be welcomed, just like I wish Scott to be welcomed by his R2 colleagues and Chris to be welcomed by his Capital colleagues. The decision was made by the bosses not by the other presenters (I assume).

I'm sure Dean & Vicky fans are thrilled to have them on in the afternoons. It won't make much of a difference to me as I'm looking forward to following what Scott and Chris do next, as much as I'm going to miss having them on together.

Yes I agree with this as gutted as  I am Scott is going I think Vicky and dean will be fine the more I think about it I’m following Vicky on Instagram now and she seems very much like Jordan north very down to earth and funny which is why I think aled  chose her

    • Intrigued why Matt & Mollie aren't presenting breakfast on Monday, with James in for them instead (which has happened before).. or even James given a chance to present the breakfast show?
    • Sam & Danni seem to be down for Breakfast on Monday. James Cusack on Going Home. That’s another new name in the list of “people who have hosted Going Home in 2025”.
    • Wednesday, surely? But this is another mess, as this weeks Summer press release said it’ll be Sam & Danni no Jamie from the 28th - so it’s actually a whole week earlier!
    • Jamie Laing’s last show before his summer break will be on Wednesday 16th July.
    • I worked out once Scott spent 3 months of a year off his own slot in the Moyles days and more like 4 in Grimmys days, six weeks of his own holiday and projects, six covering Grimmy plus some ad hoc days
    • Back on topic, I think there's quite a few of the current Radio 1 presenters who would be able to adapt to Radio 2's style in the future. It's more of question of how many of them will actually end up there. With much of R2's line up changed over the past couple of years, it's quite possible we won't see much movement there, and R2 management might even decide to look elsewhere to bring in new presenters in future.
    • With OJ covering on bank holidays. She is the best person for the job however... they're going to end up with a situation like Scott covering R1 breakfast back in the day, where she spends quite a bit of time off her own slot covering Breakfast, plus her own holiday and other commitments. She's been filming for something recently which has meant she's been off several days a week since May. She was off last week, on breakfast this week, OJ is on Mon/Tues next week, then She's off the following two weeks.
    • Looking back at this I would say now that Sara is the main cover - I think she has been reestablished as it now
    • Purley on the R1 Dance station.. Someone on DS said don't expect to see any changes to the schedule on the new stations however if they are taking on Capital Dance with this, which they clearly are, which has live presenters 7am - 10pm except for the 11am mix then they'll surely have to have a proper scheduled set of shows. At the moment Arielle is the only "live" per say show and only "live" a few days a week with earlier shows being repeated Thursday Friday and Saturday. Connor and Charlie are clearly pre records but was this only for the time it was online only and they have already got a schedule ready to go on day 1? also of note is that Charlie is taking over a podcast as well as starting a new project with podcasting which makes me wonder if she is about to step back from Dance Anthems all together to concentrate on those and Connor takes over? So you could have Arielle doing 9-12 weekdays live then someone else 12-3 and Connor live 3-6 on R1D and doing Dance Anthems on a Saturday.
    • As none of the Going Home Team aren't currently on the air, that's a bit if an issue. Considering most of the Dance DJs will be out there, I'm surprised none of them are being utilised to host the 1-4 slot that weekend.
    • Going Home presenters have done the last few years ?
    • Nat and Vicky are being sent to Ibiza this year. They’ll be live on Friday 1st August from 1-4pm.
    • Since Radio 1 Dance and Anthems have been allowed to broadcast on DAB, do we think they’ll be a proper schedule of shows like on Radio 1 Dance with the morning show and Dance Anthems at drive time. Maybe Lauren Redfern, Tyler Selby, Chrissy Cameron or Matt Hallsworth will be scheduled on named shows like Hits Radio 00s or Capital Anthems rather than the generic ‘Radio 1 Anthems’ show. Obviously it would probably cost more to produce actual shows on the station however.
    • There's been a lot of positive reaction to the Mylo and Rosie news so am interested now to hear what their shows are like. And yep wouldn't be surprised if they stay on beyond July as cover ever so often. And that Friday-Sunday news was hidden in the small print a little. It presumably means we lose Party Anthems all that month as that is what has happened this year with Big Weekend, Glasto for example. I certainly I hope it isn't Party Anthems being quietly axed full stop - it and Future Pop are 2 real hidden gems on Radio 1.
    • I’m pleased for Mylo and Rosie, they were highly thought of in our local area and definitely worthy of that slot
