Bullyproof!

BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra have brought together some of the biggest names in online social networking to put online bullying firmly under the spotlight and help young people make themselves Bullyproof.

As part of Radio 1 and 1Xtra's six-week anti-bullying season, Bebo, Facebook, Habbo, MSN, MySpace and YouTube are joining forces for the first time to try and tackle the increasingly serious issue of online bullying by putting in special measures and advice on their sites.

A special BBC website has also been created to support the campaign – bbc.co.uk/bullyproof will give general expert advice on handling bullying and helps direct people to the social networking sites where audiences can find facts and advice on how to safeguard themselves on the sites, ranging from simple guides for managing security settings to blocking users.

There's a video featuring confidence tips and advice from celebrities such as Cheryl Cole, The Saturdays and Alesha Dixon.

Audience and online communities can show their support for the Bullyproof campaign and help spread the word across social networks by displaying the specially-created Bullyproof emblem.

Supporters will be able to use this on their various social network profiles and pages and help spread the word.

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, Radio 1 & 1Xtra, says: "Online bullying has repeatedly hit the headlines this year and is a serious problem for many of our listeners.

"Radio 1 and 1Xtra continually strive to raise awareness of issues that affect young people and we felt the issue of online bullying needed to be tackled."

Ben Chapman, Interactive Editor, Radio 1 and 1Xtra, adds: "This is a really positive step forward for all those responsible for young people online.

"We have the major social networks onboard to help raise awareness of what people can do to protect themselves from cyber-bullying.

"It is great that they have all come together and agreed to work with Radio 1 and 1Xtra on what is a really important campaign."

Aled Haydn-Jones, who presents The Surgery on Radio 1, says: "Bullying is still a really big issue for many people, young and old on a daily basis.

"A lot of the things that people can do to protect themselves online are actually really simple but people are still unaware of what they can do.

"I think this is a really great thing that the social networks are joining with us to try and show people.

"Please get involved and show your support by downloading the bullyproof emblem"

Surely this should have it's own thread rather than being tucked behind an Open Surgery topic!

Right. So that's where it originally went. That explains why, when enquiring about e-mails on my 'phone, one was showing up as "OP" for the beginning of Open Surgery.... I get here, and there's nothing there.

Too late!! I've already copied it.

By the way, Aled will be going onto Habbo soon to promote Bullyproof.

Habbo is a Site where you can hang out, and even design your own furniture.... Have just learned this.

You learn something new every day. Please remember to tweet www.bbc.co.uk/bullyproof

Just watching some of those celebrity videos. They really shouldn't have bothered. It's just the same message we all already know anyway, and Cheryl might as well have just mumbled "nuuurrrrrrrr nurr nuurrrrrrrr nuurrrrrr" into the camera for all the interest she had in what she was saying. She really couldn't give a f*ck about your confidence or whether you're bullied or not.

Reinforce the message all you wish, but it's a hell of a lot harder to just hear an unsympathetic celebrity whittle off the typical "just be yourself" line with as little conviction as they can possibly not be arsed to muster, just because it makes them feel better about themselves for doing a good deed. I've been bullied, and I've been a bully, and I know exactly how it feels to be someone who isn't comfortable in their own skin with little self-confidence and it makes absolutely no difference to hear Pixie Lott rattle on about the fairies in her head or whatever she was on about (I have no clue; she was all over the place - which weirdly was a bit of a turn-on).

I hate these exercises in nothingness because it seems like they have no idea what they're on about. Cheryl "I'm so pretty and I'll punch a toilet attendant for being black if I want to" Cole talking about how to be bullyproof - please, give me a break. Absolutely no thought has gone into this at all. I'm sure it means the world to Aled and it comes through in what he does, but the insincerity of people like Cheryl and Rio Ferdinand is just ill-thought and typical mainstream self-congratulation that allows people to pat themselves on the back for doing nothing. Well done, you.

OK, Mitchell :-)

Damn, I'm running out of bloody time - 6 mins. to go. Yeah, OK, I guess these particular celebs haven't made the best job of it, tbh, especially Cheryl Cole.

Aled, fortunately, remains extremely passionate about the subject, so be sure to plug yourselves into the anti-bullying Surgery coming soon.... :-)

I'm there online, messin' around

Was having fun, they got me down

Should never let them knock me off my feet

don't want to hear from you again, the messages that you have sent,

will not listen to the words that you say,

Reported the stuff that you send, you'll soon be banned from MSN

I'm not to not to break from what you say.

Been there, done that, messed around

Want to have fun, don't get me down

I'll never let you hurt me hard again

This time maybe

I'll be

Bully-proof

I HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS

(though i need more time to make it properly scan)

I hate bullying and bullying tactics, so well done R1 for discussing the issue.

But there is so much bullying everywhere, I think it would be interesting to target some media programmes and discuss them as well.

All the reality programmes and soaps use bullying tactics in either a greater or lesser extent. Like the X factor, Simon is horrible and uses all the weight of his influence and authority to make some really cutting and unpleasant comments to people.

when we arent in the target line we usually laugh along with it and say its entertaining!!

Phil Mitchell and Archie, and Ian Beales daughter from eastenders are nasty bullies. Could eastenders wear bullyproof stickers to remind them not to promote bullying?

You can't just censor everything to fit your ideal.
