Why are the sugababes, with their Right Said Fred stuff samples from years back playlisted??

What is the purpose to the Sugababes?? I've been wondering that for a while now.

Because even their worst stuff is more memorable than Madonna's latest song.

Silly boys

They lovin' me so much

Silly boys

You can look but you can't touch

Silly boys

I ain't got no time to talk

Silly boys

Just shut up and watch me walk

Cause I'm too sexy in this club

Too sexy in this club

So sexy it hurts

True words of role models. It's practically the word sexy on repeat over a beat.

It's basically just saying "I'm f*cking hot but I'm also a big cocktease" and to be honest, that would have made a much better song.

HA!!! And right there, you have proved exactly the point I am getting at. A station more & more obsessed with "young things" at the moment... and getting it wrong.

ps: It made the floorfillers last night, which pleased me immensely!!

Just to contradict myself, U2 were in with Edith, were they not?? The ageing U2. So that's OK.

Well there you go. 'The ageing U2' are still relevant to Radio 1, but Madonna might not be. It's not about the age of the artist, but the appeal of the artist to Radio 1's target audience. Ageism doesn't come into it.

well if that Sugababes crap is what R1's target audience wants to bop about to, no wonder music in this country is shit, oh wait Simon Cowell got there first

most of the music on R1 is getting crap, what is needed is R3 or R4 buggering off & being replaced by 6 Music FM ef794ce4.gif

Is it?

As ever, your opinions on Radios 3 and 4 show that you are basing your opinions on just your opinions, and not what others may enjoy or benefit from. Both are quality stations.

exactly my point !

what others may enjoy or benefit from

i find it ironic that R1 has to change because of what the people who listen to R3 & R4 think younger people want to listen to on their radio station !

Viv, I think you're too close to Madonna to be able to rationally decide whether Celebration is a good Madonna song or not!

I LOVE Madonna. I'm one of her biggest fans and now that Michael Jackson has passed away there is no-one that comes close to her for me.

I agree though with the playlist's decision. She's a heritage artist who we should all respect but that doesn't mean she should get automatic rights to Radio 1 and it's playlist. If the young audience Radio 1 is supposed to serve don't care for a Madonna project then we shouldn't be putting it on. This is a greatest Hits album afterall, not a new album.

When I DJ'd in Southampton at the Under 18's club I played Madonna's Hung Up. That was the only song that actually made the entire floor stop dancing. I had to cut it short and go on.

Hi Aled,

i also agree that Madonna is a heritage artist & have said as much in reply to this thread however U2 are also a heritage artist/band & im not sure where the line is ?

R1 got complaints a few months ago about all the U2 coverage & then there has been a lot more of U2 this week :doubt:

Hmm. Do the words Viv and 'rational' go hand in hand? *Nati ponders and gives a winking smiley*.

I'm not too keen on this 'heritage artist' title incidentally Aled. Did you create it, or is it a term used by R1? It does sound a tad ageist and rather immature tbh.

Oh Nati, you've lost your sense of humour. You'll be joining fellow heritage forum member Viv in the moody stakes :P

Yet I bet those in Radio 2's target range would have loved it.

Some fair points made by Aled, even if I don't agree with all of them.

The thing that is telling to me is the 'Under 18s' comment- the majority of the target audience is over 18, but it seems the focus for the R1 bosses is definitely not on those at the moment, with the 'older' listeners (18-24) seemingly a little sidelined.

I said listeners, not presenters! We all know Evan Davis works in Yalding House after the show.

Yeah, PR4L is all part of the Radio 4 conspiracy. EF4L is uncovering it now. He's jealous she's even nicking his abbreviations.

    • I see Katie (and Mairead) were out with Jordan tonight.  I don’t listen to the show any longer, I am shocked they are allowed to mention Jordan.
    • At least I do not ask stupid questions…😂
    • I suggest you follow the other DJs too if so, you will learn the hardest working will go further 🤣
    • A simple check on his instagram would answer all your questions , he’s on tour with his wife and the team behind his podcast. I suggest anyone to follow the radio presenters, you will learn a lot about their other jobs and work commitments.
    • Where is Jamie? It felt like he was settling in when Vick wasn’t on but he’s not been on since last Tuesday now. They’ve not even mentioned him, in fact they’ve mentioned Jordan more than they’ve mentioned him in the last two days.
    • Scott's show is on the road next week, live from Malmö in Sweden on Wednesday and Friday, ahead of Eurovision. As he's doing the semi final coverage on the TV on Tuesday and Thursday alongside Rylan, Gary Davies sits in for him on those days.
    • I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.
    • To be fair, Scott & Chris would've still been fine on Radio 1. It was mentioned at the time that Scott's move was very much on Radio 2's part rather than Radio 1 wanting to move them on. That's the one problem that Radio 2 has, trying to appeal to such a wide demographic.. it's the perfect listen for many, but equally a turn off for many others. I think they have the balance fairly right.
    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
