Fearne Cotton receives threatening texts

RADIO 1 DJ Fearne Cotton has been left "scared and shaken" after receiving death threats during her show.

Fearne, 27, was given a police escort from the studios after a string of sinister text messages were sent to her when she was on air.

Police have now arrested a 21-year-old man over the threats. Fearne, 27, was presenting the Official Chart Show with co-star Reggie Yates on Sunday when the menacing notes arrived. A source close to the star said: "Understandably she was very scared and shaken.

"Police escorted her home because of the severe nature of the messages.

"They were very graphic and made her fear for her life. She has never come across anything like this before. Listeners are always polite and courteous with occasional banter when they text the show - nothing like this."

Fearne, who will take over from Jo Whiley's coveted mid-morning weekday show in September, was back at the central London studios yesterday.

A source added: "Fearne's a tough cookie. She wouldn't let anything stand in the way of getting on with life and work."

As well as her successful radio career, Fearne has fronted TV shows including Top Of The Pops and X Factor spin-off, The Xtra Factor on ITV2.

The Met Police said a 21-year-old, held at 9pm on Sunday, was in custody for questioning. A spokesperson said: "He was arrested in connection with sending threatening SMS messages."

A Radio 1 spokesman refused to comment on presenters' security.

Derby or not, this is absolutely outrageous, and must have been really, really frightening.

This has just been posted by fake Andy Parfitt: " Probably Jo Whiley with a voice on" : Man Held Over Fearne Cotton Text Threats (Sky News)

I wouldn't wish it on anybody but I do like how The Sun managed to get a snap of her in the police car leaving Radio 1. "Quick guys, get a snap of this first and send it to The Sun".

Oh dear I did laugh at that. Doesn't really work with the text system though - you don't have to put a voice on.

We'll never whether that said person was actually in London at the time but they were quite lucky to have chosen a day she was actually at work...

As much as I moan about people's radio shows I certainly wouldn't wish it on anyone. A dislike of a radio show is not the same as a dislike of a person and Fearne strikes me as a very nice girl.

I've even come close to shit like this before through Unofficial Mills. Believe it or not one of the members I banned decided to bung my e-mail address in a crimewatch website form with the message "I did it". I received a barrage of e-mails from the police warning they'd pursue it further if I did not get in touch and I had to be checked out and prove I was a sixth former before they'd let me off!

I think you must have meant "unlucky"!!

It's just ridiculous how far people will take things. I am assuming someone doesn't like the fact that Jo Whiley has been moved to the weekends!!

I get stuff in my hotmail, which I think the 'other' Site are responsible for, claiming I have made purchases on-line, which I haven't. I've been to the Bank about it.

That's just assinine.

i'm cynical. jono points out they managed to get a picture of her in the cab! i think its a clever PR piece by fearne's people. friday morning everyone hated fearne's guts for replacing an older much loved DJ (jo whiley). sunday poor fearne was receiving death threats and she was scared. yet they got a paparazzi right next to her and when she was getting in the cab. by tuesday we're now all meant to feel sorry for fearne (a day after the daily mail shoot her down for replacing jo whiley) and now in three days everyone has gone from hating her to feeling sorry for her and she is getting better PR.

VERY cynical but I do like a conspiracy theory.

loads of paps hang around radio 1 on a sunday i would have thought for the guests they have in on the chart show

Just what I was thinking. They've been there numerous times and tried to make a ridiculous story out of something on monday morning.

I sort of guess she's more susceptible to messages such as these as she's such a "you either love her or hate her" character though. None of the other DJs (that I've heard of, anyway) have had issues like this as they seem more popular. The conspiracy theory makes sense though. Media is a funny thing.

I can't believe when I read it in the newspaper my sister said: "Oooof. Looks like you got caught then." And my dad came in from work and said: "I'm so glad my messages finally got through!" Bad family.

I can't imagine there are loads of offensive texts getting through as it would be the same culprits usually, so they just get blocked. The only occasion I remember a DJ actually referencing an abusive text was when Vernon told the texter to 'get a life' after they had a rant at Maddie Savage off of Newsbeat. They claimed she'd read some sport score when she actually made no reference to it. Surely if there were lots of these texts (more mild than Fearne's), then there would be more on-air references from people like Chris and Vernon who speak their mind.
