How would you change the playlist?

What would you like to be on the playlist, if you were making the decisions? There's a discussion about it on another forum, but I've decided to bring it across here.

Aled has written,

"Playlist is made of 10 staff around the building chosen for their different musical skills. As the most mainstream person you'll ever meet I qualify for an understanding of what a large section of our audience would like.

I'm also the digital representative on playlist spotting trends within social networking websites, blogs and musical sites - perhaps of artists that aren't fully represented by the record industry, and also to add weight to claims made by the record companies about their artists."

Round at aled.info, there's a lady commenting on French stuff, which I find interesting, but I really can't imagine a lot of that being picked up by R1 somehow. I like French stuff, but it's probably an "acquired taste".

I'd like to have a small "whine" about the lack of Madonna again at the moment. I read somewhere that there's an unwritten rule about not playing "older" artists, but surely she's the exception to this rule somehow. Hopefully, she may be on the lie-in this Sunday.

Good God. Jpop is monstrous. I had to google it, and JPop turns out to be an abbrevation for Japanese pop. Different, I must say.

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-pop

Stuff from the Wonder Years is a great idea. Stuff that Dave Pearce used to do. Could do with some more anthemtic-type tunes whilst out running. At least, there's the new Calvin Harris tune at the moment, which is fantastic.

Also, could R1 please put Friendly Fires' Skeleton Boy back on the playlist. Everyone was saying recently how much they were enjoying it, etc. - now it seems to have been removed. Put. It. Back.

I'm lovin' Kutiman-Thru-You "Mother of All Funk Chords" - check it out on youtube!!

I like Kid British. Thanks for posting about them, Computer. Been watching "Lost In London" on YouTube - loves it!!!

From the guardian.co.uk : "Kid British: more than slightly provocative, in that great tradition of wind-up Manc monikers like Joy Division and ACR - it's certainly much better than their original one, which, until recently, was Kid British and the Action Manky. They're a multiracial outfit designed to reflect a multiracial city, a four-piece, with three extra musicians for gigs, including a multi-instrumentalist, a dude with dreads on guitar, four singers, a rapper and one who calls himself the Kid. They've just signed to Mercury and they're already been hailed as the best new band in Manchester, and even though there hasn't been a truly groundbreaking Manc artist or act for nearly two decades - there have been great ones, don't get us wrong, they just haven't done anything new - that's still reason enough to sit up and listen".

Album tracks. I knew Edith has a feature, not sure how often she does it, where listeners vote for their favorite track off an album but I'd like to hear them more often as alot of them are equally as good as the singles.

Frankmusic who is massive on blogs and has even been playlisted on some commercial radio stations, hasn't been playlisted by radio 1! Look into it!

I second that. I like their new track.

From listening to pre-releases/some stations in US these are some tracks i'm digging a little:

Zarif - Let Me Back

The Enemy – No Time For Tears (already playlisted, i think)

The Veronicas – Untouched

Kelly Clarkson - I do not Hook Up (no doubt will get playlisted straight away)

Weirdly I like more light Rock/Punk/Ska music and I dont mind these tracks at all........I like i'm an all round music lover and can pretty much stand anything so i dont care! God that was useful wasn't it...

I like Zarif but, she's not very original. Gettting on the radio1 playlist could make or break her.....

The Enemy are on the A list :)

The Veronicas (Born on Christmas day doncha know) are massive in OZ but Im really not too keen, they seem bland to me

Kelly Clarckson's new single will probably get playlisted when her current song falls out of favour.

Rob - They have placed albums on the C List for the last few years such as Snow Patrol (Eyes Open), Keane (Hopes And Fears, Under The Iron Sea), Coldplay (X & Y, Prospekts March EP), Madonna I think as well. A few examples for u there.

Yeah my change would be to have them on more often :)

Despite it not happening for the reasons Aled has pointed out to me, I'm naturally biased for rock music and would like at least one song appealing to my rock and roll needs, on a weekly basis. I've seen Slipknot, Metallica and Guns N' Roses on there, but that isn't enough for me. I wouldn't mind but Radio One haven't even gone to the well for alternative rock such as Counting Crows, 3 Doors Down or Shinedown, who are far more appealing to the casual audience than Megadeth and Killswitch Engage.

Alas, I understand why Radio One do it (because British rock fans are alienated by radio and stay isolated to their ipods, which makes radio stations believe that there isn't an audience for rock music) and can always make do with non-stop N-Dubz instead.

Thank GOD they are alienated. I hate rock, I really do. I know everyone has there own tastes, but SHOUTING from one end of a song to another does not appeal to moi!! Gimme Madonna & Britney any day!! :D

Rock has many different voice Miss Viv not all shouting down the mic :P

I do love rock and metal though, but have to listen to my ipod for those things. Sucks really, R1 should throw one in every now again. Maybe not Trivium or Slipknot though :giggle:

At least Scott plays Linkin Park :D

    • On July 8th Greg will surpass Grimmy's tenure on Radio 1 breakfast (5 years, 319 days) as the second-longest breakfast show presenter. He has already passed Tony Blackburn and Sim Mayo. I'm not sure if he will make Moyles' record of 8 years, 253 days, but he certainly still seems fresh and full of ideas!
    • I guess we'll have to wait and see when the new schedule kicks in, although I could see Scott staying where he is.  Assuming that's the case and there are no other moves, there would be several available studios for Matt & Mollie - 82C or 82E of the 'old' studios, and 82M or 82N of the new ones.
    • The BBC commissioning brief mentions it is a 'mid morning show' for Radio 1 Dance https://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/documents/comm_brief_r1_dance_morning_show.pdf
    • Nothing to apologise about, I was just intrigued on how DS and UM react
    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
    • Maia Beth is doing Friday Early Breakfast on 7th & 14th June.
    • Joel Mitchell is in for Nat on Sunday 9th June.
    • Ore Olukoga is on 13.00-16.00 on Friday 31st May and Friday 7th June.  Nikita Kanda is doing Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
    • Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.
    • Echo what most have said here. Connor has great energy which is important for that sort of slot and the shame for him is that the dance line-up is so strong that there's no obvious 'in' for him to get a regular slot -Danny, Sarah, Pete Tong, Arielle, Charlie Hedges, Jerry and Charlie Tee are all great in their slots. A live show on Radio 1 Dance really feels the obvious way to get a proper foot in the door at Radio 1. Although to be fair to the DS critic I think it was just the one poster and can very much hear Connor in my head saying 'in for the legend that is Charlie Hedges'.
