Gordon and Sarah Brown held a reception at Downing Street last night to celebrate the work of LGBT campaigners.

It was the first time the LGBT community had been invited to a reception at number 10.

The event, held to mark LGBT History Month, was due to be held in February, but was postponed due to the death of David Cameron's son Ivan.

Attendees included Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, Erasure singer Andy Bell, artist Maggie Hambling and East Enders star turned Labour MEP Michael Cashman.

LGBT politicians, civil servants, campaigners, entertainers, teachers and clergy were also invited.

Mr Brown paid tribute to the work of the community, saying that he was "really proud" of the achievements that had been made over the years in breaking down barriers such as homophobia and discrimination.

He spoke of the "enormous courage" shown by campaigners in fighting for their rights, comparing the struggle to that faced by the civil rights movement and Suffragette groups.

Amid cheers, he said: "We have legislated on inheritance tax, we have legislated on homophobia in schools, we will keep taking legislative measures to protect you."

On marriage, he stated: "You cannot legislate love."

The Prime Minister congratulated guests Amy Lamé and her partner Jenny on their civil partnership, to be held today, saying that it would not have been possible without the efforts of LGBT campaigners.

Mr Brown, who had just returned from a visit to America to meet with President Barack Obama, apologised for not bringing the new leader back with him, prompting one woman to shout: "What about Michelle?"

He criticised Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in California, as "unnacceptable", adding that British LGBT campaigners had already shown how it is possible to "break new ground".

Harriet Harman, who spoke briefly before Mr Brown took the floor, said the reception was the best she had ever been to.

Co-chair of the event Sue Sanders said: “It was a magnificent night and a great honour to receive such a tribute to all our work. We can only hope that it will make next year’s celebrations even bigger and greater, and truly mainstreamed in schools, colleges and local authorities up and down the land.”

LGBT History Month is organised by Schools Out. It was launched in February 2004, in response to the repeal of Section 28.

Aha. That explains a lot. I do respect the fact that Scott doesn't want to go overboard about his sexuality, but it is a bit of a shame that he doesn't feel it's appropriate/isn't able to mention this on the show. Mind you, I suppose it isn't really essential for us to find out why he met Gordon Brown (oops just typed Gorgon, hehe). The poo stories made me laugh too.

What are you doing reading The Pink News Jono?;)

the daily mail would have a field day if Scott mentioned it on his show !

i just cannot imagine Scott having a in-depth conversation with the PM though, he would be proper

I think it made more entertaining listening without knowing the real reason why he was going. He could have probably dropped it in to the chat today though when he was being a bit more informative about the event though.

Yeah he could have said something I suppose but much more funny about him pooing in number 10. I bet that security guard will hear that!

I wonder how many sites Jono actually looks at just incase they mention Scott?

yeah,

Jono trawls the interweb, hoovering up anything that mentions the name Scott Mills so much data that Jono's ethernet cable has melted :P

where is that pic of Scott & the PM he mentioned ?

 What are you saying about Mr Mills there?

I love him and his hair straightners! So funny the other day. Not as if he's got long hair!

Off topic again, I just got some hair straighteners in Sainbury's for £3.75 as opposed to £19.99. I do love a bargain. Don't really need them much, but c'mon that is a good deal?

I agree. Don't think that Scott really needs them much either with the length of his hair.

Silly question, but can you curl hair with hair 'straighteners' too?

PS. I'm most put out that you weren't invited to Downing St. Serin. You should've done a wicked fairy godmother off of Sleeping Beauty on Gordon. Hang on! Maybe you already have; you just forgot the beautiful bit.;)

That is a good deal! I usually get mine off of my sister for xmas. I hate shopping for anything apart from geeky new technology like phones and laptops :D

Yup you can curl too, have done that a few times with my sisters hair. Just have to curl it around the straightners but don't leave it too long otherwise nice kinks lol

    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
