Fix ONE thing

Consensus on these pages is that R1 is in pretty good shape right now - And I have no quibble with that.

HOWEVER! - What's the one* thing that you would fix?  If you had the power? - The one thing that is obviously wrong, or not quite working?

It could be a matter of presentation, mix of music & speech, scheduling, whatever.  Just try to home in on one* thing, cheers ?

*Ok - maybe two things -- three at an absolute push ....

Get rid of Adele. Also change the times of the schedule so RMC is 10-1, Scott is 1-4, Jordan & Vick 4-7, Clara 7-9, Jack 9-11 and Sian 11-Mid. At the weekend get Dean to host both of the Anthem mixes.

Getting rid of Adele, who’d you replace her with? Think between hours of 12-4 in night early morning would do one or two new specialist shows agree with the idea of moving back to the on the hour start and end times for shows

Agree with the above… for me we just need the weekday schedule sorted as it’s *sooo* messy:
Greg 7-10, RMC 10-1, Scott 1-4, Vick and Jordan 4-7, Clara 7-9, Jack 9-11, Sian 11-12.

If ‘Future Sounds’ was moved back to 19:00-21:00

would from 18:00-19:00 Monday-Wednesday have ‘Best New Pop’

18:00-19:00 Thursday Party Anthems/Throwback Anthem or Requests something like that

Few minor moves as well would move the Residency to 03:00-04:00 Saturday and Sunday

Sunday Evening - Monday Early

19:00-21:00 Introducing with Gemma Bradley

21:00-23:00 Future Soul with Victoria Jane

23:00-01:00 Chillest Show With Sian Eleri

01:00-03:00 Rock Show with Nels Hylton or (keep DPCarter don’t know how much longer he’ll stay at R1)

03:00-04:00 Specialist (Hype Chart) revived with Jess Izsatt

Arrielle 04:00-06:30 Monday-Thursday

03:00-04:00 Tuesday New: Artist In Residency (Like The Artist Take over but run with an artist per month e.f YungBlud, Anne Marie, London Grammar, Sigrid, Griff, MNEK, Becky Hill, AJ Tracey being some that could do it

I don’t think they have enough ‘Best New Pop’ for 30 minutes on a Friday morning, let alone 60 minutes in primetime.

To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Best New Pop quietly disappeared over the next year or so.

My biggest problem is the nighttime schedule. From September I’d have:

Monday-Wednesday have a full on chillest show from 22:00-0:00, not just a power down playlist. This would be hosted by Sian.

Thursday night is the rock night, with The Indie Show followed by The Rock Show.

Friday and Saturday night are all about dance. Danny and Sarah on both nights, with Pete on Friday and Jaguar on Saturday.

on Sunday I’d have BBC Introducing followed by Sunday Chillout, hosted by Jess and then Sian.

Probably Katie or one of the Christmas presenters.

wouldn’t see the point of having two chillest shows consecutively. Don’t think the Rock Show would work best for Thursday evening.

Id potentially move Dance Intro to 18:00-19:00 on Saturday

Would still keep the R1Xtra night

19:00-21:00 Jeremiah Asiamah (SoundSystem) Radio 1’s SoundSystem

21:00-23:00 Tiffany Calver (Rap) Radio 1’s Rap Show

23:00-01:00 Sir Spyro (Grime Drill) Radio 1’s Underground Sounds

01:00-02:00 DJ Complexion (R&B/Electronic) Radio 1’s Future Wave

02:00-03:00 Kenny Allstar (Rap/U.K. home grown) Radio 1’s Future Rap

03:00-04:00 Radio 1’s Residency

04:00-07:00 Radio 1’s Relax content with RNB Chill, Chill Mix, The Morning After Mix …

Think on Thursday Evening would have

Clara Amfo 19:00-21 usually have second hour with an artist live, interview co host

21:00-23:00 Jess Izsatt with Radio 1’s Future Indie

23:00-01:00 Thursday into Friday Jack Saunders with a New Evening Specialist Music Entertainment format presenting with indie and alternative tracks. With also a feature for up and coming stand up talent and reviving the ‘Late Night Live Lounge’

I’d add interviews and maybe go with best pop tracks within last 3 months at maximum. Replaying some live lounge sessions from earlier in the day. Focused with playing up and coming talent odd album listening parties some entertainment news and some stuff around popular culture bits and playing some pop from BBC introducing. Potentially a chance for listeners who want to hear new tracks from pop artists that are big names who may not have track yet on top of playlist.

Feel losing something like best new pop would be disappointing as it’s definatley a good idea to find new music to listen to used to enjoy it when they did the New Music Friday playlists when Adele Roberts was on early mornings

I find the 1Xtra night just lazy to be honest. It is just a simulcast of Radio 1Xtra. If listeners want to listen to that then they will go to 1Xtra, there’s no need to show it on both stations when a second dance night would make more sense for a Saturday.

on a Sunday, it does make more sense to have a longer chill out show. Putting it from 7-9 then having the Rock Show straight after pretty much nullifies all the ‘chillest vibes.’

I agree with having throw Rock Show not on Sunday why would place it 01:00-03:00 Monday Morning but feel that it does seem odd to have two consecutive chilled shows. Think if add the Future Soul on the Sunday evening would fit that vibe I feel that it would work if the next presenter did a chill feel that sounded not the same as the last show otherwise tad repetitive as they potentially would end up having the same tracks for most of the two shows in specialist time slots.

I find with the 1Xtra take over. Few years ago would’ve changed it and have thought would it be better to give more a dance slots but feel like it’s a good thing for a youth station like Radio 1 to do to offer on the BBCs youth flagship station slots in schedule for music that would once been called ‘urban’ it’s good that radio 1 champions it in the mainstream. I can’t name a FM station national or with a listener base to offer slots to presenters from its sister station to bring different sound to Saturday nights.

Feel if Radio 1 Dance was designated to two nights you’d have the station having an issue with playing too much of one genre and scaling back on such a diverse slots of music wouldn’t be good look for a youth station rejecting genres that are largely produced by black artists and black British artists to not have a shot in the mainstream. Feel a change just to do dance for two nights would potentially lead to criticism for overly competing with Capital FM and Capital Dance.

I like the way you get two different club sounds between Friday and Saturday. Feel it’s cost effective to do the simulcast.

I also feel that it would also wouldn’t make much sense since there’s the dance livestream on BBC Sounds

My one thing... Slightly rebalance the speech / music mix (add more speech / entertainment). I'm not saying things will go back to the many long links that were part of Scott's earlier Drive shows, but perhaps just add one additional decent-length link every 30 mins during daytime. I think it would help strengthen R1's distinctive output.

I love the look of the daytime schedule from September - probably the strongest it has ever been, but the one thing that I would fix if I was in charge is the absolute mess that it looks like nighttimes will become. I can’t understand why there doesn’t look to be any particular content between midnight and 4am each day, and also why the specialist shows are being reduced to an hour. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

I would have implemented a schedule like this - keeping Future Sounds starting at 7pm:

7-9 Future Sounds with Clara Amfo
9-11 Replacement for RMC
11-1 Future Artists with Jack Saunders
1-3 Specialist
3-4 R1 Dance/ Relax
4-7 Early Breakfast

Just makes it a lot neater by mainly extending shows again!

I get what you mean here but Radio 1 is a music station and does already have long links compared to Capital. Especially on Scott & Greg there are easily 5 min gaps between songs at times with features etc. Capital you literally never get more than 30 seconds. I personally think Radio 1 strikes the perfect balance on this

I feel like this would be nice but think maybe every now and then do extended bonus bits for the podcasts. I think since atleast the mid tens they have been decreasing links slightly less and more Music but with the new September schedule feel that there will feel with refresh of what’s on and with RMC on daytime that it will feel more enriched in entertainment feature. Sometimes its quality of quantity and don’t want to be doing much filler

Completely agree with you that Radio 1 is always significantly better than the likes of Capital. And I'm not realistically expecting a return to how things were 20 years ago! But I still think the balance has tipped a bit too far away from the longer links... As proven here though, clearly some will think differently ?

Aaron's point is excellent through - by design, RMC's move to mornings will improve the entertainment balance, so my 'one thing to fix' is, I guess, already being done!!

Well, apart from the 'Prince Philip' interlude - but let's not rake over that ground again ,,,

That’s fair, I mean it’s a bit difficult then with royal deaths etc because the BBC has rules that would override any editorial decisions by any head of BBC Radio & Television. Yes felt many people made their feelings to how the BBC dealt with Phillips death clear at the time. Of course in terms of diversity of playlist and general content Radio 1 is miles better than Capital. In my own opinion, Capital Dance can be better than Radio 1 Dance stream probably understandable since Capital Dance has more live content and are adding more to it overtime.

Thanks, yes feel like it wouldn’t fit to move the times of the past but as said with the freshness of Jordan & Vick, RMC to daytime it will seem without having more talk time there’s more to it. As I know many said on here even with Nick Grimshaw on drive did seem he kind of just took some of his breakfast show to drive and think it seemed to lacked on some of the entertainment side of things. Think it’s at least with the quiz on the Scott Mills show it seems like it’s added like a sense of more in the show

R1 didn’t get anything wrong - there’s a BBC royal obit protocol which surpasses any station-level decisions and applies to all BBC output. Nobody at R1 had any say in it.

It’s a bigger debate - is the BBC’s protocol in the public interest?

I totally agree, there’s no point slating Radio 1 because they weren’t in control. I think we all agree things got better once they were on the Saturday daytime.

It’s difficult to say RE the protocol, because the next time it will be even worse in terms of disrupting normal schedules, as it’ll be the Queen. I believe the BBC on TV can’t show comedy programmes until after her funeral, so will Radio 1 have to tone it down/ditch the entertainment until this point too?
